
Ivory Coast's cocoa crop healthy, but needs more sun, farmers say
Ivory Coast, the world's top cocoa producer, is in its rainy season which runs officially from April to mid-November.
Farmers report satisfactory pod development, with plenty of large, near-ripe pods on trees, and say the next main crop is progressing well, aided by light rains and good soil moisture.
Growers reported no crop damage and said they expect more sun with adequate early-September rainfall to improve the crop.
Harvesting has begun tentatively in some plantations they said, and supply should gradually pick up from September.
"Everything is fine for now. We need plenty of sunshine, but if it rains heavily in September, we'll have losses," said Ernest Alleba, who farms near the western region of Soubre, where 0.1 millimetres of rain fell last week, 13.2 mm below the five-year average.
Farmers said the crop was maturing well and expected abundant harvests from October in the southern region of Divo, where no rain fell last week, the southern region of Agboville, and in the eastern region of Abengourou, where rains were both below average.
In the centre-western region of Daloa, and in the central regions of Bongouanou and Yamoussoukro, where rains were well-below average, farmers said they were happy with the light rainfall, which was strengthening the crop, but an increase of sunshine would improve growing conditions.
"If the sun comes out well, the trees will produce well and the pods will form well," said Ghislain Aka, who farms near Daloa, where 3.3 mm fell last week, 19.5 mm below the five-year average.
The weekly average temperature ranged from 23.9 to 26.6 degrees Celsius.

Water scarcity warning as reservoir runs dry
Farmers and businesses look set to be hit with restrictions on how much water they can extract from rivers with days as levels continue to plummet despite recent heavy rain. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency issued the warning on Thursday as it revealed there are now nine rivers at moderate scarcity level, up three on the previous week. And abstraction limits, it warned, could be imposed as early as next week as 'a small number of catchments are approaching trigger levels' as parts of eastern Scotland 'remain under sustained water scarcity pressure'. It comes as images show Ballo Reservoir in Fife has nearly dried up, with members of the local fishery fearing '£30,000 worth' of trout could die within days after being trapped in just 12 inches of water. More than 100 dead fish have already reportedly been removed from the empty water body, which is one of several which supplies drinking water for residents across Fife. The environment watchdog said localised thunderstorms at the end of last week, including reports of large hail in Dundee and parts of Aberdeenshire, 'did not change the overall water scarcity picture'. It said: 'Showers were short lived and patchy, often missing the catchments that needed rain most, and on very dry ground intense rain tends to run off rather than soak in - limiting recharge of rivers and groundwater.' Data shows that every month this year on the east coast has been drier than average and the deficit in some areas extends back to June 2024, with 40 per cent less rainfall than the long-term average for that period. Sepa said: 'That prolonged shortfall, coupled with the warm, sunny spring and summer has left rivers, soils and groundwater under pressure.' The Spey, Almond and Tweed river catchments were escalated to moderate scarcity this week, taking the total at that level to nine. There are also now 14 rivers at early warning level, with five at alert status. Early warning, alert and moderate scarcity status are based on river levels, groundwater and soil moisture, while significant scarcity reflects severe, sustained low flows assessed over a period of time, and is the point at which restrictions are likely. Sepa said if very low flows persist in the Deveron, Ythan, Upper and Lower Don in Aberdeenshire, North Fife and the Lower Tweed, it expects those areas 'could move into significant scarcity as early as next week'. Kenny Boag, Sepa's Head of Environmental Performance (National), said: 'Some rivers in the east of Scotland are days away from the point where restrictions may be needed to protect the environment. 'We are speaking directly to licence holders, so no one should be caught off guard.' Sepa added any measures which come into force would be targeted and time limited.

Drought brings autumn harvest two weeks early, Waitrose says
Harvests are coming two weeks early because of drought, Waitrose has said, as it prepares to stock autumnal fruit in summer. The farmers that supply the supermarket are already harvesting wheat, oilseed rape, oats and malting barley, a fortnight before they generally would, according to the supermarket. A lack of rainfall coupled with the hot weather has caused the crops to race through their growing stages and come to maturity early. Thomas Adami, farming operations manager at Leckford Farm, one of the suppliers, said: 'The drought conditions meant that the plants were stressed, and in reaction to this they raced through their growth stages to produce their seed before they senesce, hence the earlier harvest.' His team had managed to mitigate some of the worst drought effects as they had been practising regenerative farming, he said, which means the soil is kept in better condition and holds water for longer. Adami said: 'As we are increasing the organic matter content of our soils through our farming practices (cover crops, integrating livestock, minimising disturbance, etc), we are seeing that our soils have a higher water holding capacity, which helps our resilience to drought extremes. An increase in 1% soil organic matter leads to an increase of 168,000 litres extra water holding per hectare available to the crops.' Apples and berries will be on shelves up to two weeks early, Waitrose expects, due to an earlier harvest. Apple buyer Jessica Street said: 'We've got an early start to the apple season this year, all thanks to ideal spring conditions and a warm temperature throughout the growing season accelerating the ripening process for many fruits, like apples.' But although apples have benefited from the weather, for vegetables that require a lot of water, such as carrots, potatoes and brassicas, the situation is bleak. The Met Office is on track to record one of the warmest summers since 1884, and England had its driest spring on record, with some areas of the country also facing an extremely dry summer. Rachel Hallos, vice-president of the National Farmers' Union, said: 'The increasing extreme weather we are experiencing is impacting our ability to produce food, which will have substantial financial consequences on farm businesses. Last year's harvest was marked by heavy rain; this year, it's the lack of it. These fluctuations of drought and flood are becoming more pronounced and more regular. 'Farmers and growers need investment in climate adaptation and resilient crop varieties to safeguard our ability to feed the nation, weather market volatility and adapt to a changing climate. We also need investment in water infrastructure across the wider farming sector and planning reforms that allow us to better capture and store in times of plenty for use when it's needed.' Broccoli farmers have reported that their yields have been cut by more than 50% so far, and shoppers have been told to expect smaller vegetables on the shelves. Dry conditions could last well into October, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology has said, which would put higher pressure on water supplies as rivers, reservoirs and aquifers are at very low points after a particularly dry spring and summer. Five areas of England are in drought so far: Yorkshire; Cumbria and Lancashire; Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire; East Midlands; and West Midlands.

What are Cape Verde hurricanes? The longest and most powerful storms of the season
They are the hurricanes of legend, the bowling balls that cross the entire Atlantic Ocean, menaced ships of yore, and make the long, curved lines on the hurricane charts. Cape Verde storms, named for the group of islands about 450 miles (725 kilometres) off the west coast of Africa, typically form from clusters of thunderstorms that move off the continent and into the Atlantic. With thousands of miles of ocean water above the 80-degree Fahrenheit (27-degree Celsius) temperature needed to fuel hurricanes, Cape Verde storms are some of the most dangerous that threaten North America. About 85 per cent of all major hurricanes, Category 3 and higher, start out there, according to the National Hurricane Centre. 'They are the media stars and certainly get a lot of attention because you can track them for a long time," said Jeff Masters, a meteorologist for Yale Climate Connections. But they are also a rare threat. Less than one out of every 10 storms crashes into the U.S. The rest either fall apart or are curved out to sea by the north and east steering winds that normally prevail over the Atlantic. Now is the time to turn to the east Conditions need to be just right for Cape Verde storms to form and grow, keeping them mostly confined to August and September. Hurricane Erin is a Cape Verde storm. The National Hurricane Centre is watching two more clusters of storms to the east of Erin that could develop into tropical storms. But the atmosphere is too complex to know how strong those storms can be if they develop or whether any of them will threaten the U.S. Forecasters begin to lose confidence in their ability to predict the future of any specific storms more than a week out. It takes at least 10 days for a potential hurricane to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Warm weather and light winds help Cape Verde storms grow Cape Verde storms start over Africa, where the hot, dry air in the Sahara and the hot, humid air over the Gulf of Guinea clash and create clusters of thunderstorms that move off the continent. The warm water is the first ingredient. Hurricanes also thrive with light winds above them that won't blow the thunderstorms away from the centre. 'They are the strongest because they have the most time to develop. The other storms can crash into land too early,' Masters said. Researchers have spent the past several years studying the ocean and atmosphere in the far eastern Atlantic to get a better idea of why some storms form and some don't. In recent years, scientists have realised that dry air and dust from the Sahara in Africa, blown into the Atlantic from the east, can lessen the high humidity hurricanes need and inhibit their development. The dust can travel all the way across the ocean and settle on cars and windows on the U.S. East Coast. 'They travel about a mile above the surface, the winds are very strong, and the air is dry and hot. That's a trifecta that suppresses hurricane activity," Jason Dunion, a scientist at the University of Miami 's Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies, told the university. One or two hurricanes a year are Cape Verde storms Some years may not see a Cape Verde storm at all. Some can see as many as four or five. But on average, about one or two hurricanes a year are classified as Cape Verde storms, according to the National Hurricane Centre. And they aren't the only storms to hit the U.S. The Weather Channel analysed hurricanes since 1995 and found only nine of the 60 that struck the U.S. were the ones that track all the way across the Atlantic. The storms you remember The list of famous Cape Verde hurricanes has a lot of overlap with the list of the most memorable, powerful and deadliest hurricanes. There is the 1900 Galveston Hurricane that killed about 8,000 people in Texas, and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane that killed 2,500 in Florida. In more recent times, hurricanes Donna in 1960 in Florida, Hugo in 1989 in South Carolina, Andrew in 1992 in Florida, Ivan in Grand Cayman, Alabama and Florida in 2004, Ike in Texas in 2008, Irma in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Florida in 2017 and Florence in North Carolina in 2018 were all Cape Verde storms.
