Women unite to mark 69 years since iconic march
Marking the 69th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women's March, the event was held under the theme 'Building Resilient Economies for All'.
The day began with a powerful re-enactment of the march, as the women in the safety and security cluster led a 2.2km procession from Tshwane House, located on the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Madiba streets, to the Union Buildings.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and other government officials joined the march, paying tribute to the courage of the women who fought for freedom.
Addressing the crowd at the Union Buildings, Premier Lesufi highlighted the importance of unity and economic empowerment for women.
The celebration continued with a music festival featuring an all-female line-up.
MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, said the province had made significant strides in creating an enabling environment for women to thrive.
'Over the years, Gauteng has created an enabling environment for women to thrive both in their personal and professional lives.
'Investing in women and girls in areas such as sport, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities will remain one of the province's priorities,' he said.
He said they salute the achievements of women over the years, including their pivotal role in transforming the nation, and their contributions to socio-economic development.
'We will continue to honour women from different spheres of life for their remarkable achievements and overcoming challenges and societal barriers.'
An on-site government and business expo brought services closer to residents, with organisations such as SARS, Home Affairs, SASSA, the Department of Health and economic development agencies offering assistance and information to attendees.

Centre one step closer to launching ICT hub and shelter
Thandanani Drop Inn Centre's dream of having its own information and communication technology (ICT) Centre is about to come true. This follows after the Super Sun brand launched its new flagship Super Sun Super Together purpose-led initiative together with retailer Big Save on Thursday. The initiative involves gathering donations that will be shared with Thandanani to support the development of its ICT Centre. Thabo Kgotsi from Thandanani said the ICT centre will benefit children, volunteers, and recovering addicts in the community by giving them access to advanced technology. Kgotsi confirmed this has long been one of the goals of the centre, saying, 'It will be a learning space. Since the world is going digital, it will seek to equip and develop stability when it comes to technology. 'It will serve as a work readiness programme, and a space where the community can do copies and CVs and also apply for job opportunities. 'It's a powerful validation of the work we do. More than that, it's a commitment to the lives and futures of the people we serve, particularly our women and youth. 'Through this support, we will be able to invest further in our centre and support our community.' Thandanani is currently building a homeless shelter that still needs to be furnished, and with the help of the Super Sun Super Together initiative, the shelter will also be launched. The collected donations will then be shared between the two projects, going first to the shelter, and then later supporting the ICT centre. 'It's a powerful validation of the work we do. More than that, it's a commitment to the lives and futures of the people we serve, particularly our women and youth. 'Through this support, we will be able to invest further in our centre and support our community.' Phumzile Nhlapo, Premier FMCG Senior Brand Manager, said the Super Sun initiative will run until March 2026, celebrating the collective power of community upliftment and honouring everyday heroes that make projects like these possible. Thandanani, located in Mamelodi, has become a lifeline for the most vulnerable people in the area. The centre provides psychosocial support, feeding programmes, education, and crisis intervention services. The non-profit organisation was founded by Thabo Kgotsi and Tswayi Victor in 2011, starting their first programme with the assistance of 12 volunteers. Youth leader inspires change through global platforms
Lerato Maris, a Brakpan youth leader and proud UN Brand Ambassador, continues her upward rise with a nomination for the SA Forty Under 40 Awards and a host of global recognitions. The South African Forty Under 40 Awards are curated to identify, honour and celebrate the nation's most influential and accomplished business leaders under the age of 40 from a wide range of industries who are committed to business growth, professional excellence, community service and have risen up the ranks of their companies or industries. Lerato, a Sallies Village resident, takes the pride of the United Nations as she has embedded her stance that no good work goes unnoticed, placing her in the category of philanthropy and charity. 'Brakpan is the chronicle of who I am, it has been my biggest supporter through my journey and I am so grateful and honoured to be part of such an amazing community,' she said. 'To the youth, always remember it takes courage, determination, belief and dedication in turning your dreams into a reality. 'Work with good intentions and always pay it forward, because that is the key for transformative change we want to see in our communities.' Lerato was also a guest of honour at a Women's Day event in Brakpan on August 8 organised by Brakpan SAPS, where she gave a motivational speech commemorating the day.
