Shamrock Rovers striker Graham Burke wins monthly honour for May

Shamrock Rovers striker Graham Burke who has been hugely instrumental in the Hoops charge back to the top of the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division table has won the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers Ireland POTM award for May. The Dubliner scored four goals and two assists as his form continues to improve over the half-way stage in the title race. He has revelled in his seven appearances over the month so much so that he outscored Drogheda United's Conor Keeley and third placed Tommy Lonergan of Waterford FC in the nationwide poll. Burke has won four league titles and one FAI Cup winners' medal (2019) and he was capped three times for Ireland in the summer of 2018 against France, USA and Poland. He scored his only goal against the Americans in Dublin and, in doing so, became the first home-based, goal-scorer since April, 1978 when Ray Treacy, also of Shamrock Rovers, netted for Ireland against Türkiye. "I haven't won this award for a long time (2018), but having said that, I am delighted to have won it for the month of May. I think it's just the third time I have won the soccer writers award and the last time was back in 2018 when I was capped at international level. "Our form at Rovers has been excellent – one defeat in nine and just three setbacks in all – we just go out and try to do what we do best. We know as a group what we are capable of and we have a system we play that works well for us. "The three defeats came early on at the start of the league campaign and off the back of a short pre-season and it took us a few weeks to get up to speed. We have been on a good run lately and we want to keep that going for a long as we can. The team have been performing well week in, week out and it's not just down to me," said Graham. Rovers who are going for five league titles in six seasons are currently the highest goalscorers and have the meanest defence in the top flight. "It's game-by-game with us but it's great to be top of the table at the half-way stage. Things can change quickly in this league, it's so competitive, but I can guarantee you, that we won't be getting carried away just yet," he added.

League of Ireland walking football festival set to kick off this weekend

As the League of Ireland season reaches the halfway point with clubs vying for the title at one end and battling to avoid relegation at the other, a gentler, less stressful version of football is being enjoyed by older fans of those same clubs. This Saturday, 14 June will see the second League of Ireland Walking Football festival at the National Indoor Arena at Abbotstown where almost 150 players representing twelve LOI clubs will wear their team colours and participate in an event where the primary aim is not just to win, but to continue to enhance their physical, mental and social well-being. Walking Football has been growing rapidly in Ireland with many grassroots groups forming countrywide. Indeed, with Ireland's growing population of older adults, Walking Football is now seen as an ideal vehicle to promote health and well-being and combat social isolation among this ever-expanding demographic. One such player is former Irish International, Linda Gorman who enjoys playing weekly with the Bohemians' Walking Football group. With the advent of LOI clubs employing Football & Social Responsibility (FSR) Officers in recent times, Walking Football is one of the programmes they keenly promote and as such, there has been an increase in the number of LOI clubs participating from nine in 2024 to twelve clubs in this latest LOI festival. Clubs have also acknowledged the support of agencies such as Healthy Ireland, Age & Opportunity and various Local Authorities who have been instrumental in helping the FSR Officers establish their roles and promote and develop health promotion programmes such as this. Indeed, some clubs will also feature former LOI players lending that additional touch of technical class to the games. Although winning the tournament may be an aim for some, it's not the be all and end all for most as the real winners will be every club participating and the players renewing or forming new friendships and social networks. League of Ireland Football & Social Responsibility Manager Derek O'Neill said: 'I'm really looking forward to our second LOI Walking Football festival and if it's as good as last year, I'm very sure everyone will leave with a big smile on their face. It's always great to see the energy and enthusiasm generated among this group of players, not only on the pitch but in the social interaction and banter off the pitch. 'There'll be players in their 50s (the youngest will be 55), 60s 70s and even some 80+ year olds playing on Saturday and it goes to show that football is still playable and enjoyable no matter what age you are! It's an amazing way to maintain physical and mental health and the players today are testament to the power of the beautiful game to create and build important social networks.' For most of this group, retirement from football is just not in their thinking! Media are also invited to attend if interested and can register via
