Beautiful UK beach so well rated by tourists it keeps being named world best

Daily Mirror09-05-2025

The area is part of the UK's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has previously surpassed ratings for top locations in Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mediterranean
Located on the southwestern tip of the Gower Peninsula, Rhossili Bay is not only one of the finest beaches in the UK, but also the world.
Stretching for three miles, its vast expanses of golden sand, dramatic cliffs and unbroken views make it a must-see seaside stopover. Rhossili Bay's setting is breathtaking, with the beach curving in a gentle arc, backed by sand dunes and overlooked by the rugged Rhossili Down — the highest point on the peninsula. The area is part of the UK's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ensuring its untamed charm will be preserved for generations to come.

At one end of the bay lies the striking tidal island of Worm's Head, accessible by foot at low tide, offering adventurous visitors the chance to spot grey seals and enjoy panoramic sea views. The bay is steeped in history, with visible remnants such as the wreck of the Helvetia, a ship that ran aground in 1887, still present on its sands.

Access to the beach involves a walk down a steep path, but visitors are rewarded with spectacular views and a sense of tranquillity that makes the effort worthwhile. Facilities include a National Trust visitor centre and café, as well as handy accommodation, including the much-loved Old Rectory cottage. Dogs are welcome year-round, making it a popular spot for pet owners.
The surrounding area is rich in archaeological features, including Neolithic burial chambers, Bronze Age cairns and Iron Age forts, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.
Rhossili Bay is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts — surfers are drawn to its Atlantic swells, while walkers and ramblers enjoy the network of scenic trails along the surrounding cliffsides. Paragliders are often seen soaring above the bay, taking advantage of the updrafts from Rhossili Down.
Despite its well-deserved popularity, the sheer size of the beach ensures it rarely feels crowded, even at peak times.

Rhossili Bay's reputation is not just local — it has quite rightly received international acclaim. In 2013, TripAdvisor crowned it the UK's best beach and the third best in Europe, as well as ranking it among the top 10 beaches in the world, even surpassing celebrated locations in Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
It is also a remarkable spot for witnessing the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis — a rare phenomenon in Wales. Although more commonly seen further north in places like Scotland, strong solar activity combined with clear, dark skies can make the lights visible from Rhossili Bay, especially during the autumn and winter months when nights are longest and skies are clearest — making the majestic beauty of the area truly magical.
The bay has also featured widely in popular culture, including the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, as well as episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood, further boosting its profile.
Rhossili Bay's unmissable combination of natural splendour, historical intrigue and outdoor adventure have firmly established it as one of the greatest beaches in the world.

The UK's best hidden gem tourist attraction revealed

Looking to escape tourist traps in the UK this summer? A new study has unearthed the country's best hidden gems for Brits and created a hotlist of underrated landmarks. The research looked at the number of reviews, the tourist traffic per landmark and the cost of public transport to create the list. So, where are the UK's best hidden gems? According to the study, the Wasdale Emerald Pool in Cumbria is the country's best hidden gem. Sometimes known as the 'Fairy Pool', the picturesque spot is formed by several small waterfalls and has a bright green colour. Next on the list are the Birmingham Back to Backs. A museum operated by The National Trust, the Back to Backs are the city's last surviving back-to-back houses. Built around a communal courtyard, the houses were occupied from around 1840 right through until the 1970s. As they explore the historic houses, tourists will get a glimpse into what it was like to live there through the decades. The Back to Backs are only accessible via a guided tour so tourists will need to book their tickets in advance. The third best hidden gem in the UK is Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire in Wales. Although the beach is quite popular with surfers, it's not nearly as well-known as other beaches in the area with just 234 reviews on Tripadvisor. Tulleys Farm in Crawley just misses out on a spot on the podium, ranking as the UK's fourth-best hidden gem. The family farm in West Sussex has a pumpkin picking patch, an annual Christmas Lights festival and escape rooms for visitors. Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire rounds out the top five. A National Trust property, the Tudor Manor is known for its 'quirky character'. The National Trust reveals: 'Seeing the tumbling architecture of Little Moreton Hall for the first time, engineers in 1990 could not believe their eyes. 'This timber-framed building, curled around with a scenic moat, has defied logic for over 500 years.' Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes, the Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh and Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire are also among the country's top 10 hidden gems. Corin Camenisch, marketing and growth leader at SumUp, which commissioned the research, says: 'We created this ranking to spotlight some of the UK's hidden gems, places that are often overlooked in favour of the usual tourist spots like the London Eye or Buckingham Palace. 'By highlighting these underrated hotspots, we're hoping to show people spots they might not know about and spread the benefits of local tourism. 'These hidden gems often rely on tourism to sustain their operations, and by shining a light on them, we're hoping to ensure that local businesses can benefit from a steady flow of visitors, which is crucial for their growth and long-term success.'

Narberth restaurant named among UK's best by national awards

The National Restaurant Awards took place on Monday (June 9), celebrating "the brilliance and vibrancy of the UK restaurant scene, honouring the best chefs and operators across the country". Awards handed out at the annual event included: National Restaurant of the Year Gastropub of the Year Chef of the Year Cocktail List of the Year Wine List of the Year Opening of the Year Best Restaurant in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (four individual awards) A list of the UK's top 100 restaurants was also revealed, featuring one Pembrokeshire restaurant - Annwn. The best restaurants in the UK The best restaurants in the UK, according to the National Restaurant Awards, are: Why Annwn is among the UK's best restaurants Annwn was ranked the 68th best restaurant in the country at the National Restaurant Awards. The Narberth-based restaurant describes itself as "a Welsh food movement" that pays homage to its Welsh surroundings and landscapes. It was recommended by the National Restaurant Awards for its "hyper-local food with a sustainable conscience". The Awards website explains: "Chef-patron Matt Powell serves a single 10-course menu that changes during the seasons using ingredients that are not only local to the area, including many that are foraged close by - often within walking distance of the restaurant - but those that support sustainable producers and the country's wild ecosystems. "A meal at Annwn starts with a selection of snacks, that might include bread 'cooked on the planc' and seasonal offerings such as cured and air-dried meats before getting to the heart of the matter with a procession of dishes that celebrate Pembrokeshire's bounty and which feature some unusual and not often used ingredients. "Plating is meticulous, with dishes served on a wide variety of crockery and items from the natural world to accentuate the restaurant's natural approach. "By contrast, the dining room is less formal than the food's presentation might suggest, with wooden tables and chairs, dark slate flooring, and vintage furniture creating a rustic but comfortable space in tune with its surroundings." Previous dishes at Annwn have included: Kilpaison oyster with purée, estuary plants, and an oyster cracker A broth of velvet swimmer crab, St Brides prawns, sea buckthorn emulsification, sea radish and (nicer than it sounds) scurvy grass Mallard accompanied by damson Paste, hazelnuts, and preserved hogweed seeds Customers agree Annwn is "one of the best in the world" It's not just the experts who love Annwn, but customers as well, with it boasting a perfect 5 rating on Tripadvisor from 46 reviews. It has been described by visitors as a "culinary gem", "one of the best in the world" and a "beacon worth travelling a long way" for. Have you visited Annwn before? (Image: Tripadvisor) One person, commenting about their experience at Annwn, said: "Top 3 restaurant in the world for a special experience. "I am fortunate to have eaten at highly rated restaurants all over the world, including those with multiple Michelin stars. "Annwn stands out for the authentic and deeply immersive experience into Welsh food, history, and community. It was worth every penny and much more." RECOMMENDED READING: Another customer, posting on Tripadvisor, added: "True to name, Annwn is out of this world, in the best of ways. "A fabulous experience of top Michelin quality food in a wonderfully intimate and personal setting. Cannot recommend highly enough. "Surely Annwn will be awarded its star very soon. "Matt is the most committed and passionate chef I have spoken with and, together with Naomi, they host a brilliant experience."
