Pahalgam attack: BJP launches campaign across Punjab seeking action against illegal Pakistani nationals
The BJP launched a statewide campaign Monday demanding the identification and deportation of illegal Pakistani nationals residing in Punjab in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in South Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
Party leaders at the district level submitted memorandums to deputy commissioners across the state urging immediate legal action in this regard. Copies of the memorandum have also been marked to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
In his memorandum, Rajnish Dhiman, president of the BJP 's Ludhiana district unit, cited the Union Home Ministry's recent order suspending visa services for Pakistani citizens, excluding diplomatic and official categories. 'This is a matter of grave national security. The local administration must identify all Pakistani nationals without valid documents or with expired visas and initiate deportation proceedings without delay,' he said.
In the memorandum submitted to Himanshu Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, Dhiman added that the BJP expects swift and decisive action from the administration in line with national directives to prevent any potential threat to public safety.
'We urge authorities to take immediate cognizance of this memorandum and ensure appropriate action,' said BJP state spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal.
The move comes amid heightened security concerns across the country following the April 22 terror attack, and signals the party's intent to ensure stringent enforcement of immigration laws at the grassroots level.
Sources revealed that the police and intelligence bureau have all details of Pakistani nationals in Punjab whose visas have expired and whether they have been deported.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday paid tributes to the victims of the Pahalgam attack. In the wake of the terrorist attack, India took swift action against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, downgrading diplomatic relations with the neighbouring nation, and expelling diplomats from the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi.

"Census delay is no accident, delimitation plan is no coincidence": Tamil Nadu CM Stalin's fresh attack on Centre
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 6 (ANI): Reiterating his attack on the Centre over Census and Delimitation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, on Friday, said that the Census delay is 'no accident' and the delimitation plan is 'no coincidence'. Despite the assurance from Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Stalin asserted that a clear parliamentary commitment and a suitable constitutional amendment are what are needed to address the concerns of southern states on delimitation. 'The #Census delay is no accident. The #delimitation plan is no coincidence. The danger I warned of is at our doorstep,' Stalin said in a post on X. 'The Ministry of Home Affairs claims that the concerns of affected states will be addressed. But these are vague remarks. What is needed is a clear parliamentary commitment and a suitable constitutional amendment,' he said. The Tamil Nadu CM claimed that there is a 'sinister design' in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation. 'Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population control norms, will now be punished. Meanwhile, states that disregarded population control for decades are set to gain more seats in Parliament. This unfair shift skews the federal balance and rewards irresponsibility,' MK Stalin said. Alleging the track record of the BJP, Stalin cited the example of Jammu and Kashmir, as how the Centre spoke of restoring statehood to J-K, but it still remains a Union Territory. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, in a post on X, said, 'Budget has never been a constraint for Census as fund is always ensured by the Government. HM Amit Shah has clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time.' On Wednesday, the central government announced that the Population Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases and will also include the enumeration of castes. According to the MHA statement, the reference date for the 'Population Census-2027 will be 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country.' However, for the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00:00 hours on October 1, 2026. Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 6 (ANI): Amid Opposition's backlash over the Bengaluru stampede, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, on Friday asserted that the government has don't its best to give justice and soon it will come up with a plan to ensure such events do not happen in future. Speaking with the media, Shivakumar said, 'My Chief Minister was kind enough to announce a judicial inquiry. Action has been taken on some of them. Investigation is underway. Action has been taken, and the case has been handed over to the CID. What more can the Government do? The government has done its best to give justice, and we will come up with a plan of action to ensure that such events don't happen in future.' On the BJP asking for his resignation, Shivakumar said that they (BJP) are trying to do politics on dead bodies. 'Let them (BJP) demand (my resignation). They (BJP) are trying to do politics on the dead bodies. We don't want to do politics,' the Karnataka DyCM said. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for politicising the recent stampede. His remarks came after the BJP accused the Congress-led state government of making the police a 'scapegoat' in the incident. CM Siddaramaiah said the state government has already taken action against officials who were found to be 'visibly responsible' and 'negligent in their duty.' 'They are doing it for politics. I don't do politics. We have taken action against those who were visibly responsible and found to be negligent in their duty,' the Chief Minister said here. Karnataka Police filed an FIR against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), among others, in the Bengaluru stampede incident. In response, KSCA has filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking the quashing of FIRs filed against it. Eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday.
