CCE of Broome receives $10,500 for fruit & veggie vouchers
TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County received one of nine grants to increase people's access to fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies.
To celebrate March as National nutrition month, Fidelis Care gave CCE a grant for $10,500.
The money will go to bolster CCE's SNAP Ed Fruit and Vegetable Prescription program.
Through the program, 75 people in need will receive weekly vouchers to purchase produce at the Broome County Regional Farmer's Market on Upper Front Street.
The associate director of CCE, Tara Kenyon, says to receive the food vouchers, those in the program will take a class, and learn about basic cooking skills, proper eating habits, and how to eat healthy without emptying your wallet.
'We're going to be working very closely with our local healthcare providers who are actually going to be the ones identifying individuals in the community who will benefit from this program. So, once they get enrolled into the program, they're going to participate in six weeks of nutrition education classes with our SNAPed nutritionists. And at each class, they'll receive twenty-dollar vouchers to be able to spend at the farmer's market,' says Kenyon.
In total, Fidelis donated $128,000 to similar organizations across the state, with an emphasis on serving communities with low-income families.

It might be time to get the men in your life to see a doctor!
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Every June, you have the opportunity to celebrate the men in your life by sending them to the doctor. Maybe not the doctor, but to make sure they stay healthy. Men's Health Week is the week leading up to Father's Day every year. Men are encouraged to make their health a priority and, of course, spread awareness. According to Arik Olson, the medical director with Fidelis Care, you have to be consistent. 'I believe it's important for all men to have a primary care provider. That could be a doctor, a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant,' said Olson. 'But I believe it's important to see that doctor, or primary care provider, at least once a year just for a check-up. Even if you're not sick, just to see if there's anything you should be doing to stay healthy.' According to data from the Center for Disease Control, the leading causes of death for men include heart disease, cancer, and accidents. They say: 14.7% of men 18 and older are in fair or poor health 30.9% had five or more drinks in one day, at least once within a year 12.5% smoke cigarettes 7.6% use E-cigarettes 50.8% are struggling with hypertension 39.2% of men 20 and older are considered obese There are a number of things men can do for their health, including eating healthy, exercising, not smoking, and not drinking too much. Those are the usual suspects, but Olson says it's also important to get your teeth cleaned every year and be social. 'Even joining a sports league or meeting with a group of people for whatever reason — maybe to play cards — has significant impacts for our health.' Then, of course, there are age-specific tests to keep in mind, like getting a colonoscopy after the age of 45. On Friday, people are encouraged to wear blue to celebrate Men's Health Week. Don't forget to snap a photo for social media, if you do. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

The grants, open to healthcare providers and community-based organizations in New York, aim to fund programs that support innovative strategies in postpartum care and maternal mental health. The application is available at The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. July 8, 2025. Postpartum care and maternal mental health are critical components of long-term health and well-being for new mothers and their families. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) says mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, are among the most common complications of pregnancy, affecting an estimated one in five individuals annually in the United States. Postpartum care attendance is inconsistent, with mean attendance rates in the U.S. around 72%, and even lower among the most vulnerable populations, such as those served by Federally Qualified Health Centers, where non-attendance can reach 43%. Access to health insurance has been associated with higher postpartum visit attendance, which is essential for screening and addressing both physical and mental health needs after childbirth. "As a healthcare community, we must recognize that supporting mothers after childbirth is just as vital as caring for them during pregnancy," said Fidelis Care Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vincent Marchello. "Ensuring access to postpartum care and mental health services not only improves the well-being of mothers but also strengthens families and communities as a whole." Fidelis Care plans to announce the recipients of its 2025 maternal health grants in August.
