CCE of Broome receives $10,500 for fruit & veggie vouchers
TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County received one of nine grants to increase people's access to fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies.
To celebrate March as National nutrition month, Fidelis Care gave CCE a grant for $10,500.
The money will go to bolster CCE's SNAP Ed Fruit and Vegetable Prescription program.
Through the program, 75 people in need will receive weekly vouchers to purchase produce at the Broome County Regional Farmer's Market on Upper Front Street.
The associate director of CCE, Tara Kenyon, says to receive the food vouchers, those in the program will take a class, and learn about basic cooking skills, proper eating habits, and how to eat healthy without emptying your wallet.
'We're going to be working very closely with our local healthcare providers who are actually going to be the ones identifying individuals in the community who will benefit from this program. So, once they get enrolled into the program, they're going to participate in six weeks of nutrition education classes with our SNAPed nutritionists. And at each class, they'll receive twenty-dollar vouchers to be able to spend at the farmer's market,' says Kenyon.
In total, Fidelis donated $128,000 to similar organizations across the state, with an emphasis on serving communities with low-income families.
