Tenants Harbor woman identified as homicide victim after body found in Union pond

Jul. 5—A Tenants Harbor woman has been identified as a homicide victim after authorities found her body Thursday at a pond in Union.
Sunshine Stewart, 48, was identified as the victim Saturday in a news release by Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety. An autopsy was performed on Thursday by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, and the manner of death was determined to be a homicide, according to Moss.
Moss said the cause of death is not being released at this time and authorities did not identify a suspect in the killing.
Officials found the body in Crawford Pond in the Knox County town of Union on Thursday while searching for a missing paddleboarder.
Union fire Chief Jesse Thompson previously said his department was dispatched to Crawford Pond about 12:30 a.m. Thursday to search for a woman who had not returned from a paddleboarding trip. Fire department staff launched a boat to conduct the search from Mic Mac Cove Family Campground on the north side of the pond and notified other agencies, including the Maine Warden Service and Maine State Police.
Maine game wardens joined the search just after 1 a.m.
Searchers located a body a few hours later, Thompson said, and authorities later said the circumstances were suspicious.
Moss said game wardens requested help from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit "based on the circumstances surrounding the discovery." State police then began an investigation, which Moss described as "active and ongoing," into the killing.
Police asked that anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding on Wednesday between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond to contact Maine State Police at 207-624-7076.

Madbury couple, children identified after suspected murder-suicide

MADBURY — Ryan and Emily Long and two children, Parker, 8, and Ryan, 6, have been identified as the family members found dead of apparent gunshot wounds Aug. 18 in their 14 Moharimet Drive home as the result of a suspected murder-suicide, according to authorities. A third child, who is a toddler, was not physically injured, according to the New Hampshire attorney general's office. New Hampshire State Police and the attorney general did not immediately identify a suspected shooter. Autopsies are scheduled Aug. 20 with the state medical examiner. The elder Ryan, 48, a school psychologist, and his wife, Emily, 34, a restaurant leader, both had visible jobs in the community. New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati said his office has heard from multiple people Ryan Long has been battling brain cancer. Multiple community members who knew Ryan Long reached out to Seacoast Media Group to say the same. Agati emphasized the attorney general's office does not "want to jump to conclusions" about Ryan Long's illness. "I don't know whether that was a motivator for what occurred inside the house, or if it was not," Agati said. He also said he has not seen medical records to confirm the illness. Agati said investigators were conducting interviews "to try to get to a better idea of what were some of the different stressors going on for different members of the family." "One of the biggest things we need to do is understand the sequence of what occurred during the event," Agati said. "And once we know that, I think we're going to have a better handle on motive." Ryan Long was a school psychologist at Oyster River Middle School in Durham. He had worked for the district since 2016, according to his LinkedIn page and an article published about him by the Oyster River High School student magazine in 2017. His time in the district started with one year at Madbury's Moharimet Elementary School. He worked as a mental health counselor with multiple organizations and schools before becoming a school psychologist, earning his doctorate in psychology at the University of Southern Maine. He previously earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of New Hampshire, according to his LinkedIn page and the article. The article stated he worked in Hollywood "in the marketing industry with Sony Pictures" in the early 2000s before returning to New Hampshire and pursuing his career in education and counseling. Emily Long was director of operations for the local Wing-itz restaurants chain, according to her LinkedIn page. Her background includes leadership jobs in the hospitality industry and a bachelor's degree from UNH. Robert Shaps, superintendent of the Oyster River Cooperative School District, issued a statement. "The Oyster River Cooperative School District community is heartbroken by the tragic loss of four community members. We extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted during this incredibly difficult time," he said. "We have partnered with local school districts and organizations to provide mental health support for our students and their families, and our staff. As we prepare for the coming school year, our commitment remains to the well-being of our students, staff, and their families. Out of respect for everyone involved, we will not be making further comments." Also commenting was Todd Selig, town administrator in Durham. "Members of the Durham community are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life at a home in Madbury involving members of one family. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this terrible event, especially the families, friends, and neighbors within our broader Oyster River Cooperative School District community,' Selig said in a prepared statement. Neighbor takes family's dogs after tragedy Bill Hall, a nearby neighbor on Moharimet Drive, was seen walking the neighborhood Aug. 19 with a dog he said belonged to the family. Hall said he 'approached the state police' and said he could take the dogs in an interview with Foster's Daily Democrat. Hall said he spoke with the mother last week and she was 'as nice as can be" and there was a young child selling lemonade outside. While the investigation is still ongoing, there is no known threat to the general public at this time. No additional releases of information are anticipated until after all autopsies have been conducted, officials said. AG: Emily Long shot husband and kids in Madbury murder-suicide

MADBURY — Emily Long shot and killed her husband and two of her three children before taking her own life in the family's 14 Mohamiret Drive home in a murder-suicide, according to the New Hampshire attorney general's office. Chief Medical Examiner Jennie V. Duval conducted autopsies on both adults, Ryan Long, 48, and Emily Long, 34. Duval determined Ryan Long's cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and his manner of death is homicide, according to the attorney general. Emily Long's death was suicide by a single gunshot wound to the head. Associate Chief Medical Examiner Abigail Alexander conducted autopsies on Parker Long, 8, and Ryan Long, 6, determining both children's causes of death were single gunshot wounds to the head, also homicides. The couple's youngest child, a toddler, was not physically injured, authorities said. "Based upon the information available at this time, it appears that in the early morning hours of Monday, August 18, 2025, Ms. Long took a handgun from the home and caused the deaths of Ryan Long and her two children, Parker and Ryan, and then took her own life immediately thereafter," the AG's office said in its press release. AG warns against speculation about deaths In the days and months before the four family members were found dead on Aug. 18, Emily Long shared her family's struggles in a series of TikTok videos that have gained media attention. She started in April, announcing her husband's diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. She increasingly described being overwhelmed by how the family's lives had changed. She recently told her viewers on TikTok she felt herself "withering away," acknowledging she needed help and hoped she would be ready to seek it before it was "too late." She also expressed worry about finances and becoming a single parent. The attorney general warned against reading too much into information circulating about the family. "While investigators are becoming aware of various concerns/issues ongoing in the household at the time of the event in question, people should avoid speculating that this event was caused by a single reason or stressor," the attorney general's press release states. Citizens in crisis are reminded that they can call, text or chat with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 9-8-8, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741, the AG stated. Emily and Ryan were both known in the community. She was director of operations for Wing-Itz restaurants in the Seacoast. He was a school psychologist at Oyster River Middle School.
