Ludhiana records coolest July in 15 years amid higher rainfall
Meteorological experts attribute the welcome change to above-normal rainfall this monsoon.
According to the
India Meteorological Department
(IMD), Ludhiana received 180.3 mm of rainfall in July, 9% more than the normal average for the district. This marks a significant improvement from July, 2024, when rainfall was just 85.5mm, nearly 48% below normal. The highest July rainfall since 2000 was recorded in 2022, with 297.8mm.
Cooler days, milder nights
Average maximum temperature (daytime high) for July, 2025 was 33 degrees Celsius, lowest in 15 years, according to IMD data.
The previous lowest was 33.1 degrees Celsius in 2023. Most other years saw highs ranging between 33.5 degrees Celsius and 35.5 degrees Celsius.
The highest maximum temperature recorded on any single day in July, 2025 was 35.8 degrees Celsius, matching the lowest such record from 2011. This indicates that not only were average temperatures lower, but even the hottest day of the month was relatively mild as compared to previous years.

Night temperatures also saw a slight dip. The average minimum temperature for July, 2025 was 26.8 degrees Celsius, lower than 27.8 degrees Celsius in 2024, though slightly higher than 26.7 degrees Celsius in 2023.
Cooling effect
Experts attribute the cooler temperatures to increased rainfall activity. Surinder Paul, director, met department, Chandigarh, told TOI that Ludhiana received good rainfall throughout July, which helped suppress daytime heat.
He added that seasonal rainfall in Ludhiana is already 35% above normal, and the district is expected to receive more showers in August.
Residents Notice the Change
Locals also felt the difference. Barinder Singh, a resident, said the first half of July felt unusually pleasant. "It didn't feel like the typical monsoon season, which is usually hot and humid. Only in the second half did the weather turn sultry," he said.

IMD forecasts heavy rain in some West Bengal districts till Aug 10
Agency: Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) The IMD on Monday forecast heavy rain in some districts of West Bengal till August 10, owing to an upper air circulation over north Bangladesh and an active monsoon trough. Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar till August 10, the India Meteorological Department said in a bulletin. The south Bengal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Bankura and Purulia are also expected to receive heavy rain till the morning of August 8, it said. Light to moderate rain will occur in all the other districts of West Bengal, the IMD said in its forecast till August 10. Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district recorded the highest rainfall in West Bengal in the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Tuesday at 48 mm. Kolkata recorded 42-mm rainfall during the period, it said. The weatherman has forecast thunderstorms with lightning in Kolkata till August 8. Monsoon fury claims 192 lives in Himachal; 106 in rain-linked disasters, 86 in road accidents
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], August 5 (ANI): As the monsoon continues to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has reported a cumulative death toll of 192 people since June 20, 2025. Of these, 106 deaths were caused by rain-related calamities such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, and drownings, while 86 people lost their lives in road accidents during the same period. The SDMA's cumulative monsoon damage report, released on August 5, highlights the extent of devastation caused by relentless rain. The hill state has suffered losses across sectors, including widespread damage to roads, electricity infrastructure, water supply schemes, agriculture, housing, and public institutions. Infrastructure losses have reached staggering proportions: 449 roads remain blocked due to landslides, including major national highways like NH-21, NH-003, NH-154, and NH-305. Additionally, 753 power distribution transformers are non-functional, and 276 water supply schemes have been disrupted.
