Tesco launches wedding gift registry as couples ditch fine china for toilet roll and bin bags

Daily Mail19-05-2025

Tesco has launched a wedding gift registry, as newlyweds say they want more practical presents.
The service, available on the registry site Prezola, offers couples a range of packages covering everything from everyday essentials to Tesco Finest products.
The bundles have been curated by Married At First Sight expert Mel Shilling and include items like toilet roll, bin bags and toothpaste.
Cost increases mean the average couple now takes a year to pay off their wedding, which could be behind their desire to receive household essentials rather than luxuries.
Research by the supermarket shows that 2 in 5 couples are ditching items typically associated with wish lists, like fine china and furniture, in favour of more practical items.
Nearly half of the engaged or recently married couples Tesco surveyed said this was mainly due to rising living costs.
Just 10 per cent of couples surveyed said they would ask for crockery, and another 10 per cent for towels. Only 8 per cent would add fine china to their list.
A quarter said they'd prefer to be given dinner dates, and 18 per cent said they'd like to have their weekly shop taken care of for a year.
Shilling says: 'The key to setting up newlyweds for success is creating a foundation for everyday wellbeing and resilience so the romance can flourish.
'When the basics are taken care of, couples can prioritise their relationship and focus on creating moments that bring them closer.
'That's why the Tesco wedding gift registry is genius. Setting aside expectations around "traditional" wedding gifts, Tesco has listened to what couples today actually want and created something that will help build the foundations of a strong marriage.
'Whether that's a champagne toast to celebrate a win, a cup of tea together in the morning or a home-cooked meal to share - it's the little things that make a big difference.'
Tesco is offering newlyweds six bundles to choose from until 18 November.
There's 'the really useful stuff' bundle which covers everyday essentials for six months, including toilet roll, toothpaste, bin bags and bathroom products and will set you back £63.
Shilling adds: 'Acts of service can go a long way in relationships, little things like making sure that you're replacing the bin bag when it's full, or not leaving an empty loo roll for your partner to discover.
'Having the basics taken care of can help build the foundations of a relationship, allowing couples more time to focus on each other and get their married life off to a great start.'
Tesco is also offering couples a 'dine-in date' bundle, which costs £72, and for the tea-lovers an 'I love brew' bundle for £39.
On the pricier end, the 'toast to love' bundle, which costs £156, includes six of Tesco's finest premier champagnes.

Plans for tram-train link to connect 'forgotten' Bolton, says mayor

Greater Manchester's mayor has said towns left out of a new transport funding boost have not been "forgotten", as he revealed plans for a new tram-train service. Andy Burnham said full details of a proposed new transport link that would connect Bolton and Leigh to the Metrolink system via Atherton would be published next comes after the government announced £2.5bn in extra transport funding for the tram network to extend to Stockport and see added stops in Bury, Manchester and told BBC Radio Manchester he wanted "all our boroughs to be connected by a Metrolink style service". The mayor was challenged by listener Alison while on BBC Radio Manchester's phone-in, who asked why the £2.5bn cash injection made no mention of Bolton. She said: "Has Bolton been forgotten yet again? When, when, when will Bolton be linked to the Metrolink?"Burnham said the town had not been "cut out of the picture or forgotten", and a plan to connect Bolton and Leigh to the Metrolink service via Atherton would be published next month. This would see the use of tram-trains, able to operate both on tram tracks and existing rail lines, he said. 'Attractive place' The mayor said the reason Bolton had not been included in the chancellor's announcement was that transport schemes elsewhere in the region were "more viable at this moment in time. "He also said that rail passengers would see other, non-infrastructure changes in Bolton said: "Two rail lines which connect via Bolton are coming into the Bee Network by 2028."That means Bolton will all of a sudden be a very attractive place from a travel point of view."Passengers will be able to tap in at Bolton station and they'll be in the Bee Network cap. That's going to be a change that comes quicker than any new infrastructure."In effect, those services will be like Metrolink, they'll be quicker and passengers will be in the same system." Major supermarket is selling HUGE 4.5kg Toblerone bar for Father's Day – and it's the cheapest around

MORRISONS have just launched a GIGANTIC Toblerone bar just in time for Father's Day - for the cheapest price around. The bar weighs 4.5kg which is over 12 times bigger than the traditional size bar and heavier than the average new born baby. 3 The limited-edition bar is in stores now and will be until Sunday June 15, 2025 making it the perfect present for Father's day. While the bar weighs in at a hefty weight, so does the price, with the bar on offer at £60 for customers with a More Card. However, those without a More Card will have to pay the full price of £80. The chocolate bar is only available in store at Morrisons but is also currently sold on Amazon for £69.99. This is not the first time that the giant chocolate bar has been released to the public as it was previously stocked in 2017. as they released supersized items for the period. The supermarket is replicating the same trick this year for Father's Day as they sell more big items alongside the Toblerone. A limited edition footlong sausage roll, baked fresh in store everyday, will also be available for just £2 until June 15. Alongside the supersized Toblerone and sausage roll Morrisons have a Father's Day range of indulgent bakery sweet treats, corking deals on beer and ale, and further gifts and cards. 3 3 This announcement follows public outrage at the supermarket after they encouraged customers to spend more but then ran out of promised rewards. The retail giant introduced a special offer in February offering free or discounted luxury kitchen essentials in exchange for spending certain amounts. Customers earn one More Card stamp for each £10 spent in-store. Supermarket loyalty schemes - which has one? MOST UK supermarkets have loyalty schemes so customers can build up points and save money while they shop. Here we round up what saving programmes you'll find at the big brands. Iceland: Unlike other stores, you don't collect points with the Iceland Bonus Card. Instead, you load it up with money and Iceland will give you £1 for every £20 you save. Lidl Plus: Lidl customers don't collect points when they shop, and are instead rewarded with personalised vouchers that gives them money off at the till. Morrisons: The My Morrisons: Make Good Things Happen replaces the More Card and rewards customers with personalised money off vouchers via the app. Sainsbury's: While Sainsbury's doesn't have a personal scheme, it does own the Nectar card which can also be used in Argos, eBay and other shops. You need 200 Nectar points to save up £1 to spend on your card. You need to spend at least £1 to get one Nectar point. Tesco: Tesco Clubcard has over 17million members in the UK alone. You use it each time you shop and build up points that can be turned into vouchers - 150 points gets you a £1.50 voucher. Here you need to spend £1 in Tesco to get one point. Waitrose: myWaitrose also doesn't allow you to collect points but instead you'll get access to free hot drinks, and discounts off certain brands in store. Once shoppers have earned 15 - the equivalent of spending £150 - they can unlock discounts on an array of top quality Pyrex kitchen containers. Or, once reaching 30 stamps or above, the items become free depending on the value of the Pyrex product. One disgruntled customer said: 'How frustrating after saving for dishes in your offer (Pyrex vacuum dishes) to be told that the store doesn't have any…. 'Bad planning on your part and annoying for loyal customers who are supporting you.' In Morrisons Eccles store in Salford, Manchester, a woman was recorded hurling items at the self checkout before throwing another customer to the floor. The police were called to the scene and eventually arrested one woman at the scene on suspicion of assault and assaulting a police officer on June 3, 2025. A Morrisons spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.

I wanted 20 kids but my hubby said 3 – we compromised with 12 as it's easier the more you have & we have 4 sets of twins

A WOMAN has revealed how she wanted a staggering 20 kids, while her husband wanted three - and now they are currently on 12. Despite her bumper brood, Amanda Sellers insists that the more kids you have the 'easier it gets', even though she has a whopping FOUR sets of twins. 2 In a video on her @thesellersdozen account, she showed off her large family, and said that all her sets of fraternal twins have occurred "naturally." The woman, who homeschools all her children, said she has never undergone fertility treatment. All the children are under the age of 10 and the family's grocery bill is around £2,000 per month. Unfortunately, the family did lose one of the twins from their third set in utero. Amanda said that carrying her fourth set brought back some tough memories but shared her relief at finding out both babies are healthy and strong. HUGE COSTS Of course, supporting such a large family doesn't come cheap. Thankfully, the family has a lot of support, with the children's grandfather working remotely alongside their dad. Amanda explained that her dad rents their basement to use as office space, providing her family with an additional source of income. She revealed that she has also put her years of experience with breast-feeding towards a certification in lactation consultancy. The busy mum also homeschools all the kids, encouraging the younger ones to learn from their older siblings. Millie Radford sparks concern of the family feud reigniting as she says she wants to go 'home' during Florida holiday The family owns a 15-passenger transit van, allowing them to travel together rather than in separate cars. And while they receive a lot of support from friends and family, not everyone is as accepting of their lifestyle. MIXED REACTION TikTok users shared their thoughts on the large family in the comments section. "[You're] going to have to buy a school bus soon," wrote one follower. 2 "Do you have a TV at home?" joked another viewer. "How about 'Enough' and 'Already,'" suggested one person when the couple asked for baby name suggestions. On the other hand, lots of viewers showed their support for the family. "What in the Cheaper By The Dozen? Love this!" commented one follower. "This is amazing and beautiful! Congratulations on your beautiful family!" said another person. The world's biggest families The Vassilyev family This family currently holds the record for the most children a couple has parented, after the matriarch gave birth to 69 children, including 16 pairs of twins and seven sets of triplets. Mrs. Vassilyev has given birth to a total of 69 children, including 16 pairs of twins and 7 sets of triplets. 67 of the 69 children survived infancy. The Radfords Sue and Noel are parents to 22 children, and their hectic family life is documented in reality show 22 Kids and Counting. The pair have remained adamant that they won't be having any more kids, but the amount of grandchildren they have is ever expanding, with daughters Sophie and Millie both mums of three. The Duggars Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar have 19 children - 10 sons and nine daughters. All of their children's names begin with the letter J. They also had their own reality show in the United States, and became household names because of it. The Bates family Kelly also has 19 children, with her husband Gil Bates. Of 19 deliveries, 14 of them were natural. The couple also have 28 grandchildren, with four more on the way. The Dougherty Dozen Mum Alicia frequently shares videos and pictures of her family. She and husband Josh have four biological children together, as well as adopting or fostering the rest of their brood. The Rosario family Yalancia and husband Michael are parents of 11. They had their first daughter together earlier this year, and are also parents to Jamel, 15, Michael Jr, 11, Angelo, 10, Gimani, seven, Armani, six, Sincere, three and Khaza, two. Their fourth son, also named Armani, was stillborn.
