Indonesian police criticised for showcasing robots, sidestepping bigger issues
At the national police's 79th anniversary parade on July 1 in Jakarta, the force unveiled 25 new machines – including RoboCop-style robots, robot tanks and robodogs – in the presence of
Indonesia 's President
Prabowo Subianto
Their spokesman, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, said the move reflected the force's commitment to keep up with global policing trends.
'The police are an institution that adapts to change,' Sandi said in a June 30 statement. 'By 2030, police in several countries will [use] robots. We are also learning from other countries.'
These robots, which have to be controlled remotely, will be used for search and rescue efforts in disaster zones or a fire, defusing explosives, hostage situations, collecting forensic evidence, such as fingerprints and DNA samples, monitoring traffic violations, and others. The robodogs can also assist the K9 police teams in detecting illicit materials and substances.
The robots were made by China's Unitree Robotics and Deep Robotics, with prices ranging between US$2,700 and US$16,000.

Malaysia, Indonesia unite to protect palm oil industry, migrant workers
Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to work together to counter negative campaigns against their vital palm oil exports and bolster protection for migrant labour, as the Southeast Asian neighbours brace themselves for slowing growth under looming US tariffs. Advertisement Southeast Asia 's export-reliant economies have launched multipronged attempts at boosting trade with existing and new partners, as they scramble to secure trade deals with Washington in a bid to soften the blow from punishing tariffs scheduled to kick in on August 1. Indonesia and Malaysia are the world's two largest producers of palm oil, accounting for about 85 per cent of global supply for the ubiquitous ingredient used in everything from chocolate spreads to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. But demand has largely been limited to traditional markets like India and China, as environmental lobbyists – particularly in the West – accuse palm oil plantations of driving deforestation and biodiversity loss. Insta360's Antigravity challenges DJI with 8K 360-degree drone
The consumer drone industry is facing new competition from China, as Antigravity – a new brand from omnidirectional camera specialist Insta360, is set to unveil its first product. Advertisement Scheduled to be unveiled in August, the unmanned aerial vehicle weighs less than 249 grams and features a built-in 360-degree camera with 8K resolution, according to the company. That would make it the industry's first '360 drone': until now, users have resorted to attaching full-degree cameras to their flying machines. According to Antigravity's website, which launched on Monday, the new drone supports real-time data transmission and allows users to adjust shooting parameters during flights. After years of quiet development, the vehicle aims to cater to both experts and beginners, as well as 'everyone in between'. Antigravity, known as Yingling in Chinese, said that the industry had hit a bottleneck, with some users feeling 'tired of drones that looked good on paper but felt lifeless in the air'.
