Tesla Won't Like EV Rival's Plan to Take Its Cars Global by 2027
Tesla has been struggling to gain momentum in China, posting a 6.8% year-over-year decline during Q2 and having eight consecutive months of year-over-year sales declines before snapping the cold streak in June with a 0.83% annual increase. While BYD retained the largest market share in China among EV makers in May, Xiaomi's SU7 SUV was the country's leader in E-Segment (executive or full-size car) sales. While Xiaomi likely won't be making it to the U.S. anytime soon, its serious consideration of global expansion is among the last things Tesla wants to hear, especially as Elon Musk's company struggles this year in other markets, like much of Europe.
Xiaomi Auto is one of China's fastest-growing EV makers, but it must overcome some significant challenges to pave a path toward global expansion. Backlogged orders are one of Xiaomi's primary roadblocks. Chinese consumers' interest in the company is promising for investors, but Xiaomi confirmed that drivers will have to wait over a year on average to receive an ordered YU7. Non-refundable YU7 orders reached 240,000 in the first 18 hours in late June. Xiaomi's CEO even suggested that those in urgent need of a vehicle who have pre-ordered a YU7 should consider purchasing an Xpeng G7, Li Auto i8, or Tesla Model Y, according to Yicai Global. Local publication Sina Technology reports that Xiaomi's Auto Phase II factory, which was completed in June, is urgently recruiting to ramp up YU7 production. The standard YU7 has wait times of up to 15 months, while the Max variant has the shortest wait time of about 9.5 months.
The automaker also appears to have room for improvement in quality control, as its SU7 finished last in the 2025 Q1 China automobile quality ranking in the segment of large BEV sedans, according to CarNewsChina. Xiaomi appears to be taking this area seriously, with its CEO noting: "Knowing Xiaomi's cars would be scrutinized by millions of netizens, that every flaw would be magnified 10‑thousand‑fold, we prioritized quality above all from day one [for the YU7]," says Yicai Global. Once Xiaomi resolves its production bottlenecks, establishes a consistent track record of quality control, and delivers widespread customer satisfaction in China, international expansion challenges include, but aren't limited to, fulfilling countries' varying regulatory requirements and establishing reliable sales, distribution, and service networks.
Xiaomi is one of the most promising up-and-coming Chinese EV makers, especially with its ability to turn cars into smart automotive platforms via its comprehensive digital ecosystem. However, Xiaomi must focus on optimizing its local presence in China before expanding globally, and the company's significant production delays make the prospect of going international by 2027 a challenging task. The YU7's rollout is a pivotal moment for Xiaomi, as it presents an opportunity to demonstrate quality control and production ramp-ups for a product that will directly compete with China's best-selling vehicle in 2024, Tesla's Model Y.

For over a decade, autonomous vehicle company Zoox has been building an autonomous vehicle designed to stand out from others on the road. There's a reason the rectangular glass-paneled Zoox robotaxi looks so weird. Besides the vehicles' lack of steering wheels, perhaps the most interesting Zoox feature is its two-engine design. Zoox calls its vehicles bi-directional, meaning there is no forward or reverse because both directions are forward. The two motors at different ends of the car allow it to drive forward in two directions. Unlike Tesla (TSLA) , which has said it doesn't use the technology because it's too expensive, Zoox utilizes light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to navigate traffic autonomously. LiDAR uses lasers to measure distances and create highly detailed 3D models of its surroundings. Zoox uses this tech, along with cameras, radar, long-wave infrared sensors, and microphones, to map the traffic around it. All of that tech needs a lot of computing power, and Nvidia has provided that power since 2014. But now the startup is ready to take its vehicles to the streets in a big way, according to a new note from Morgan Stanley. The company will use the facility for engineering, software/hardware, integration, assembly and everything else. According to Morgan Stanley analyst Bran Nowak, who has seen the facility's size and grandeur, suggests that Amazon, which bought Zoox for $1.2 billion in June 2020, is fully committed to ensuring the company builds something viable soon. "Zoox's Hayward, the CA facility, is 220,000 square feet (~3.5 American football fields) and, at full scale, has the capacity to assemble more than 10,000 robotaxis per year," says Nowak. "Notably, this is similar to Waymo's Mesa, AZ plant at 239,000 square feet in size and capable of producing tens of thousands of vehicles per year." Related: Forget Tesla, Ford is eyeing even bigger EV rivals Of course, Tesla does not have any issues with production capacity for its robotaxis since Tesla's ultimate goal for the program is to have every Tesla on the road have the capacity to be a robotaxis. Tesla built nearly 1.8 million vehicles last year. Tesla robotaxi launched in Austin, Texas, in June to much fanfare. Tesla also has ambitions to expand to different locales, but its debut has gotten off to a rocky start. Multiple videos have appeared on social media showing the vehicles failing to achieve the basic road competence of a student driver. User @BradMunchen didn't share where his video came from, but the 42-second clip shows a Tesla robotaxi with its left blinker on following a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of it. But the robotaxi becomes "confused" after the vehicle in front makes a left turn. The autonomous vehicle drives in the wrong lane for five seconds before correcting its course and safely merging into another lane. But there is also a lot of hype around the program. Tesla hopes to figure out Austin soon so it can move on to the next city. Never mind what you heard — the BRICS summit failed before it began
The BRICS are falling apart. The promising economic group — originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — has increased both its membership and its internal rivalries. And the leaders of Russia and China, the group's two superpowers, are not expected to attend this weekend's Summit in Rio de Janeiro. China's authoritarian government is going through a rough patch, and I'm not talking about the Chinese real estate crisis, its lack of purchasing power, its high youth unemployment, low population growth or the economic slowdown that makes its recent 10 percent annual growth feel like a distant memory. No, the new crisis is linked to a strange earthquake prompted by President Xi Jinping, who often disappears for several weeks at a time and announces the renewal of an anti-corruption fight to purge 'undisciplined' military personnel or eliminate potential political adversaries. Gen. Miao Hua, vice admiral the People's Liberation Army, is one of the latest top officials to be purged by the political and military architecture of the Communist regime. Miao was a senior admiral and the director of the political work department of the Central Military Commission, which helps ensure loyalty within the armed forces. Xi's political maneuvers also affect generals and scientists in missiles, nuclear programs and aerospace. China plays a divisive and discordant role in BRICS. Its ambition for greater power and promotion of its geopolitical strategy against the West has led it to double the number of BRICS members, regardless of factors such as economic strength, political stability or positive contributions to the group. In this pursuit, countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Indonesia, Ethiopia and Iran have joined as new members. China has also weakened BRICS through its rivalry with India. China maintains close political, military and commercial ties with Pakistan, India's main adversary. Added to this, a silent trade war has deepened, in which China hinders India's industry, generating tensions between two countries. The other BRICS members are not exempt from challenges and confrontations. After President Trump's return to the White House, the so-called leadership of the Global South appears divided and defeated. In April, the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Summit failed to pass a joint resolution, unable to reach agreements to promote the integration of Brazil and South Africa as permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. The meeting was a bust. The BRICS conflicts do not end there. Vladimir Putin cannot attend Rio in person because there is an international arrest warrant out for him for war crimes in Ukraine. Iran and Saudi Arabia are not necessarily best friends; Ethiopia and Egypt have a tense relationship over the Nile. And the list goes on. The host country, Brazil, also has its own valley of shadows. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has lost international support due to his radical pro-Iran and pro-Russia stances. Domestically, polls show Lula with only 28 percent approval. The Brazilian economy is a disaster, with high interest rates that make credit more expensive, reduce consumption and slow growth. Brazil seeks to promote the candidacy of a woman for U.N. Secretary General and, at the local level, Lula has expressed potential interest in a fourth presidential term to 'prevent the return of the right.' BRICS has utterly failed to break the hegemony of the dollar, and the New Development Bank is a white elephant that lacks the resources or financial strength of Western, U.S.-backed institutions such as the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund. The BRICS summit has already failed before its launch. Perhaps we can expect some agreements on artificial intelligence, the promotion of renewable energy and a general, watered-down call for dialogue and peace in the Middle East and Ukraine. But there won't be much more than that — it's just another brick in the wall. Trump rides major wave of momentum going into July Fourth after Iran, BBB, Supreme Court and lawsuit victories
President Donald Trump is riding a major wave of momentum after he signed his $3.3 trillion "big, beautiful bill" Friday – a final notch in a series of wins for his administration in recent weeks. The bill's passage comes on the heels of other significant victories for his administration, including a Supreme Court ruling in his favor and successful strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities. "President Trump has delivered more wins for the American people in two weeks than most Presidents do in four years," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Thursday statement to Fox News Digital. "This has been the most historic two weeks of any Administration in history. Thanks to President Trump, America is back and is the hottest country in the world!" The tax and domestic policy bill arrived on his desk after the House passed the final version of the measure Thursday – meeting Trump's self-imposed Fourth of July deadline to get the measure over the finish line. The bill includes key provisions that would permanently establish individual and business tax breaks included in Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and incorporates new tax deductions to cut duties on tips and overtime pay. The measure also raises the debt limit by $5 trillion – a provision that has faced scrutiny from figures such as SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Furthermore, the bill rescinds certain Biden-era green energy tax credits, and allocates approximately $350 billion for defense and Trump's mass deportation initiative to weed out illegal immigrants from the U.S. The measure also institutes Medicaid reforms, including new 80-hour-a-month work requirements for Medicaid recipients, and expands work requirements for those on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Here are some other recent events that have gone in the Trump administration's favor: The U.S. launched strikes June 21 targeting key Iranian nuclear facilities, which involved more than 125 U.S. aircraft, according to Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Following the strikes, Trump said in an address to the nation that the mission left the nuclear sites "completely and totally obliterated," and Caine said that initial battle damage assessments suggested "all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction." Still, Caine acknowledged that a final assessment would "take some time." But days later, a leaked report from the Defense Intelligence Agency, published by CNN and the New York Times, cast doubt on those claims, saying that the strikes had only set back Iran's nuclear program by several months. However, the Pentagon said Wednesday that internal intelligence assessments indicate the strikes set back Iran's nuclear program by one or two years. "We have degraded their program by one to two years, at least intel assessments inside the Department (of Defense) assess that," Defense Department spokesman Sean Parnell told reporters Wednesday. The Supreme Court ruled, 6–3, to block the lower courts from issuing universal injunctions on June 27. Multiple executive orders Trump has signed during his second administration have been tied up in the courts as a result of nationwide injunctions, including his ban on birthright citizenship. The Supreme Court's ruling means that lower courts are only permitted to issue broad injunctions in limited cases, which Trump said would prevent a "colossal abuse of power." "I was elected on a historic mandate, but in recent months, we've seen a handful of radical left judges effectively try to overrule the rightful powers of the president to stop the American people from getting the policies that they voted for in record numbers," Trump said on June 27. CBS News' parent company, Paramount Global, Tuesday agreed to a $16 million settlement with Trump, stemming from a lawsuit Trump filed against CBS in October 2024 related to a "60 Minutes" interview with his opponent in the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris. In the lawsuit, Trump alleged that CBS deceptively edited the interview with Harris when asked about why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasn't "listening" to the Biden administration. While the segment aired one answer from Harris during a primetime special on the network, a less polished answer had previously appeared in a preview clip of the interview. The money from the settlement will not go to Trump himself, but rather, toward his future presidential library and to cover the plaintiffs' fees and costs. CBS said it worked with a mediator to reach the settlement agreement and that Paramount will not issue an apology.
