Lebanon reaffirms commitment to peace as deputy PM returns from UN conference on Palestinian statehood

Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri has returned to Beirut from New York, where he led Lebanon's delegation at the high-level international conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the realization of a two-state solution. The summit, held at the United Nations headquarters on July 28 and 29, was co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France and attended by representatives of 126 countries. During the two-day conference, delegates reviewed reports submitted by working groups offering practical recommendations and measures aimed at paving the way for the establishment of a Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967, borders. Heads of delegations shared their respective national visions for achieving political solutions. In a notable development, the British Foreign Secretary announced the UK's intention to recognize the State of Palestine in September. In his address, Mitri reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to the Arab Peace Initiative and emphasized adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the security arrangements adopted last November. He condemned Israel's continued violations, hostile actions, and occupation of Lebanese territory. He praised Saudi Arabia and France for their leadership and thanked the United Nations for its efforts, calling for the renewal of UNIFIL's mandate this coming August. The conference concluded with a final declaration stressing the immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the unity of the West Bank and Gaza under one state, one government, one law, and one unified security force. The declaration urged countries to participate in the upcoming international conference for recovery and reconstruction in Cairo. It also endorsed the creation of an international force under UN auspices to maintain stability, protect Palestinian civilians, and support Palestinian security institutions. The statement reaffirmed the two-state solution in line with all relevant international resolutions and called for support for the Palestinian Authority to implement reforms and hold elections within one year. On the sidelines of the conference, Mitri held bilateral meetings with several international representatives, including officials from Palestine, Qatar, Jordan, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Turkey, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Germany.

Order on the Occasion of the Eightieth Armed Forces Day

Wednesday, 30 July 2025 Fellow Troops, With a united heart beating with faith, hope, and pride, we celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the LAF, which today holds particular significance amidst the conflicts in our region. On this occasion, we reflect on eighty years of dedication and sacrifices made by our military personnel, recognizing more than ever that the Armed Forces, for which its martyrs sacrifice their blood, transcending all affiliations and loyalties except loyalty to Lebanon, is an Armed Forces capable of overcoming obstacles with unwavering will, leading the nation to the sought-after salvation. Fellow Troops, In light of the grave events shaking the region, Lebanon faces a series of intertwined challenges, chief among them the threats and assaults from the Israeli enemy against our country and the peoples of the region, who persist in violating international resolutions and attempting to disrupt our social structure. Following this is terrorism, which seeks to undermine the unity of the homeland and the safety of its citizens. Additionally, the repercussions of regional events leave their mark on our internal landscape, necessitating a collective effort to maintain national unity and for all parties to act with awareness and responsibility to navigate this critical phase. Amid these circumstances, the LAF continues to carry out its missions despite limited resources, including the completion of establishing state authority and asserting its control over all its territories as per the political authority's mandate. This includes implementing international resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, in close cooperation and coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as well as carrying out security maintenance tasks, securing and protecting the northern and eastern borders, monitoring maritime borders and territorial waters, combating organized crime, and supporting Lebanese citizens through developmental and humanitarian missions. All of this necessitates enhancing the LAF's capabilities to meet challenges, and we look forward to cooperation with brotherly and friendly nations to achieve this goal. The LAF will not relent in thwarting any attempt to undermine security and civil peace or drag the nation into strife, remaining the guarantor of all Lebanese and committed to their unity, cohesion, and solidarity within the framework of state institutions. Fellow Troops, I fully recognize the difficulties each of you faces with faith and determination, whether on a professional or social level. I look upon you with pride and appreciation, sensing in you dignity and absolute dedication. I assure you that the LAF Command is making continuous efforts to support you and secure the greatest possible rights and improve your conditions. Know that the strength and stability of the state come from the strength of the LAF, whose strength is the result of your unity and high morale. We emphasize the necessity of providing the required support to the military institution from the relevant authorities in the state, enabling it to develop its capabilities and improve its conditions in facing the current difficult circumstances. Continue your work diligently and do not hesitate to give your all in defense of your families and homeland, to uphold the message of honor, sacrifice, and loyalty. Yarzeh, on 30/07/2025 General Haykal Lebanese Armed Forces Commander
