Digital asset trading ‘educator' accused of fraud in new lawsuit

Furus beware: a digital asset investor who poured nearly $1 million into a popular 'crypto trading course' is suing for fraud, according to filings made June 11.
The suit is filed by disgruntled student Brian Firestone. It accuses Alpha Stock Investment Training Center (ASITC) and its Chairman, John Smith, of running a fraudulent scheme to siphon money away from clients under the guise of a paid digital currency trading educational course, promising massive returns to clients willing to pay for trading signals and investment strategies.
Firestone was first approached by ASITC and Smith in late 2024 when Smith offered to train Firestone on digital currency trading and promised a no-strings-attached $500 to test their advice using Coinbridge, an affiliated exchange.
Within weeks, Firestone turned that paltry amount into $55,000 of profit. ASITC and Smith then encouraged Firestone to invest his own money to keep the good times rolling. Firestone agreed, putting up $50,000.
Firestone initially saw more success: his $50,000 investment ballooned to $2,000,000—only to crash back down to a piddling $12,000 within a few weeks.
Firestone was next persuaded by ASITC to 'invest' another $800,000 to gain access to a 'higher level of trading strategy.' $470,000 was to come from Firestone himself, while ASITC would loan him $330,000 worth of USDT for the rest. Firestone agreed.
That higher level apparently contained some genuine insight because the plaintiff says his account boomed to $24,500,000 shortly thereafter. This took him over the threshold set by ASITC, which would allow investors to take profits—but according to the suit, ASITC not only refused to honor the threshold, they 'sabotaged' his largest position by preventing him from closing a highly leveraged option trade. Firestone had to watch as his account fell back down to zero.
And in a cautionary tale about the allure of sunk costs, ASITC and Smith convinced Firestone to accept another USDT loan—this time for $1,000,000. But as soon as Firestone began to make money again, ASITC and Smith demanded that the original $330,000 loan be repaid in 'outside cash' before they'd let him withdraw from his trading account. This evidently prevented Firestone from using the assets already in his trading account to repay the loan.
When Firestone refused, his account was shut down, and his balance—by then worth more than $6.6 million USDT—was wiped to $0.
Now, Firestone says ASITC's business model amounts to a fraudulent scheme. He's suing across nine separate counts, including fraud, unjust enrichment and breach of contract, civil theft, and breach of fiduciary duty. Beware the fake guru
In frothy markets, the so-called guru promising to sell their trading knowledge in exchange for money is a common feature. These people will tell you they aren't just gifting you fish; they're teaching you how to catch them yourself—for a price.
These furus (or fake gurus) can be found in the property market, promising to teach paying customers how to become real estate moguls. There are even furus who will charge to be taught how to open and run profitable Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) stores, as shown by a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit against DK Automation in 2022 (unsurprisingly, DK Automation was also revealed to be selling digital asset money making courses at similarly extortionate prices).
The promise of riches can make these scams hard for some to spot. As Firestone's story shows, some people using these courses will see financial success in the short term, making it hard for prospective customers to judge how valuable the course is.
Looking at the ASITC's promotional materials, it certainly ticks many of the boxes you'd expect out of a furu: they talk about 'democratizing' financial education, 'empowering' individuals, and even touts its proprietary 'StarSpark AI system,' which supposedly revolutionizes stock investment training by 'analysing individual learning patterns and real-time market data.'
It further promised returns of 400%—something its written agreement with Firestone even guaranteed in full, offering to pay him whatever shortfall might exist at the end of the program.
Firestone's story is far from unique, but it does offer a sad look into the world of the furu. It contains excerpts from messages between Firestone and Smith:
'Good afternoon Professor Smith,' writes Firestone in one message. 'Congratulations on your continuing successful trades this afternoon. I really get the Cycle theory whereby major technological advancement results in 50 year cycles. I want signals. Thx.'
'I am very grateful to you and the entire team. This is a great place to be.'
'Trust me, this is just the beginning,' said Smith in one reply. 'There will be many opportunities like this in the future.'
Firestone discovered that there were not, in fact, many more opportunities like this in the future.
None of the defendants have filed a response to Firestone's lawsuit at the time of writing. The case number is 1:25-cv-01825.

The number of male victims of recorded sexual offences rose by 54 per cent between 2023 and 2024, new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show. The increase related mainly to a near doubling of such crime incidents that were reported by males more than a year after the occurrence. According to the CSO data of Recorded Crime Victims 2024, the number of female victims of sexual offences increased marginally from 2,387 in 2023 to 2,419 victims in 2024. Women remained the main victims of recorded crime incidents of sexual offences, accounting for three out of every four victims in 2024, compared with 26 per cent for males. The suspected offender was known to the victim in seven out of every 10 (70 per cent) recorded crime incidents of sexual offences in 2023 that had been detected by 2025. Advertisement Looking at the nature of the relationship in more detail, the CSO found that in 16 per cent of detected crime incidents of sexual offences, the suspected offender was a friend or acquaintance of the victim and was a blood relative in 13 per cent of incidents. Current or former intimate partners or spouses accounted for 8 per cent of all suspected offenders for this type of offence. The share for other suspected offenders known to the victim was 18 per cent and this relationship category would be considered less personal in nature to the above categories. The suspected offender was a stranger to the victim in three out of every 10 (30 per cent) such detected crime incidents. Advertisement In 2024, 50 per cent of victims of crime incidents of sexual offences were aged under 18 years at the time of occurrence. Most other victims were aged between 18 and 44 years. In 2024, three in every ten sex crime victims reported the incident more than 10 years after it occurred. This was up from 22 per cent in 2023 and 21 per cent in 2022. Advertisement Meanwhile, seven out of every 10 crime incidents of harassment and related offences in 2023 that were detected by 2025 involved a female victim. In most cases, the suspected offender was a male. There were 77 recorded victims of crime incidents of homicide and related offences in 2024, down 11 from the 88 victims recorded in 2023. Of the total victims, 41 were by murder or manslaughter while the remaining 36 were by dangerous driving leading to death. Advertisement Three out of four victims of all crime incidents of homicide offences in 2024 were male while 26 per cent were females. There were 24,142 recorded victims of crime incidents of attempts/threats to murder, assaults, and harassment offences in 2024 and this was the highest over the four-year period 2021 -2024. Within this category, 62 per cent of assault victims were male compared with 38 per cent for females. When assessing detected crime incidents of attempts/threats to murder, assaults and harassment, friends or acquaintances accounted for 13 per cent of suspected offenders. Current or former intimate partners and spouses accounted for 8 per cent and 6 per cent respectively of suspected offenders. The share of blood relatives among suspected offenders was 7 per cent while it was 5 per cent for people in a position of authority or in a care relationship with the victim. The share for other suspected offenders known to the victim was 23 per cent. In more than a third (35 per cent) of such crime incidents, the suspected offender was a stranger to the victim. Disgraced former NFL star Henry Ruggs III has publicly apologized to the family of the woman he killed in a 2021 drunk-driving accident. On Tuesday, three and a half years since the crash that took the lives of 23-year-old Tina Tintor and her dog Max, the ex-Raiders receiver was granted special release to speak at a Hope for Prisoners event in Las Vegas. 'One, I wish I could turn back the hands of time,' the 26-year-old began, as seen in video from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. 'I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something,' he continued. 'I sincerely apologize for not only being a part of that situation, but the fact my face is always in the news, it's always in the newspaper. So they have to constantly be reminded of the situation, be reminded of me.' This isn't the first time Ruggs has offered a publicly apology since pleading guilty to DUI and being sentenced to anywhere from three-to-10 years in prison. Prior to his incarceration, Ruggs addressed Tintor's family in a Nevada courtroom. 'To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering my actions the morning of November 2, 2021 have caused you, your family and those who knew Ms. Tina and Max,' he said, according to multiple reports. 'I let my family, my teammates and those who believed in me down with my actions and hurt so many.' Ruggs was cut by the Raiders following the pre-dawn crash as he recovered in a Las Vegas-area hospital. He and his fiancee were also injured in the collision. In a statement read in court by Tintor´s cousin, David Strbac, Tintor´s mother, Mirjana Komazec, offered prayer for Ruggs and his young daughter. 'We pray that Henry Ruggs is blessed with the opportunity to be able watch his beautiful daughter grow into the amazing woman she can be,' Komazec's statement read. 'And we pray that this terrible accident inspires positive change in the world. We pray that we all take away the importance of looking out for one another, remembering everyone we meet is another human's loved one.' Ruggs, a former Alabama star and the 12th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, has remained busy in prison, where he's continued to train in hopes of an NFL return, according to former teammate, Josh Jacobs. 'Keeping up with him and hearing him talk, it brings me spirits, because he's always positive,' Jacobs, who now plays for the Green Bay Packers, told the Pivot Podcast in April. 'He's positive about everything. He's training. They let him train and things like that, so I'm like, 'When you come out, man, I don't know if you will get a chance.' 'I've been talking to some people for him,' Jacobs continued. 'They've been saying a couple of teams are willing to give him a chance. JPMorgan rises to stablecoin challenge with roll out of deposit token

The US banking giant has told CNBC that it's planning to launch a so-called deposit token on Coinbase's public blockchain Base, which is built on top of the Ethereum network. Each deposit token is meant to serve as a digital representation of a commercial bank deposit. The new yield-bearing token will offer round-the-clock settlement and will only be available to the bank's commercial client base. 'We see institutions using JPMD for onchain digital asset settlement solutions as well as for making cross-border business-to-business transactions,' Naveen Mallela, global co-head of Kinexys, JPMorgan's blockchain unit, told CNBC. 'Given the fact that deposit tokens would eventually be interest bearing as well, this would provide better fungibility with existing deposit products that institutions currently use.' The bank says that while its token may share some similarities with a stablecoin, it's ultimately a different kind of product, providing institutions with a similar product that also has the benefit of closer ties to the banking system. In May, the Wall Street Journal reported that PMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo have held discussions on potentially launching a stablecoin that will improve transaction speeds whilst managing competition from encroaching crypto firms. The move follows US regulatory action towards stablecoin regulation, with the Senate pushing for the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for Stablecoin Act (GENIUS Act).
