Raymond van Barneveld given green light by PDC to go against normal regulations
Darts legend Raymond van Barneveld is relishing taking part in a World Seniors event against some of his old rivals after being granted permission to play by the PDC
Raymond van Barneveld has shocked darts fans by entering a non-PDC TV tournament. The Dutch legend has accepted a wildcard invite to play in the World Seniors Champion of Champions tournament later this month.
Typically, PDC Tour Card holders cannot participate in televised or streamed events outside the PDC's jurisdiction, but an exception has been made for the five-time world champion. Van Barneveld's involvement in a World Seniors event had sparked speculation over the 58-year-old's future in the PDC.
However, he remains within the PDC fold, with the powers that be sanctioning his request to compete at the MODUS Live Lounge in Portsmouth on June 29. When contacted by the Mirror, the PDC confirmed: "Raymond has asked for, and been granted, permission to play in the event."
Meanwhile, Jason Francis, chairman of World Seniors Darts, assured fans that all protocols were observed. On social media, Francis confirmed: "RVB followed the correct procedures, and permission was granted. It's all good."
Responding to ex-world champion Keith Deller's query about whether other players could make similar requests, Francis said: "The PDC contract allows players to apply for permission. In this case [we're] delighted it's been granted for @Raybar180 to play as he is a legend and a fantastic addition but 11 others will want to prove a point so should be fantastic competition. Darts is the winner here."
Van Barneveld is set to face off against icons like Simon Whitlock, Steve Beaton and Mervyn King, who will form part of the 12-play field in Portsmouth. The former Premier League champion insists he is taking the tournament deadly seriously, saying: "The sport has always loved big characters, and World Seniors Darts have brought them back, with most still playing to a high standard.
"They have a loyal crowd, and the popularity for the Seniors seems to grow and grow. I'm looking forward to catching up with the old faces of the sport, especially from my BDO era.
"I'm not coming over to Portsmouth thinking this will be easy. I will be giving my full respect to all of the players involved, and I will be preparing hard for this tournament.
"With players like Simon Whitlock, Steve Beaton, and Mervyn King - who've just stepped off the pro tour - plus Seniors World Champions like John Henderson, Robert Thornton, and Ross Montgomery, it's going to be a real battle."
There's no indication that Van Barneveld intends to quit the PDC Tour, although he could play in fewer tournaments as he heads towards the end of his career. He is on course to be part of the field at the upcoming World Matchplay in Blackpool, which starts on July 19.
The exception to play in the Champion of Champions potentially opens the door to lower-ranked PDC players and stars of Van Barneveld's age to compete in the MODUS Super Series and World Seniors events.

Bayern Munich explain why Liverpool won Florian Wirtz race as medical scheduled
Liverpool look set to beat German giants Bayern Munich to the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz and chiefs of the Bundesliga giants have had a lot to say about the deal Bayern Munich were unable to match Liverpool 's lofty offer for Florian Wirtz, a prominent chief at the German giants has admitted. The Reds look set to win the race for the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker having fought off huge competition. Manchester City looked to be the frontrunners but were forced to back out after growing concerned at the finances involved. Bayern were then expected to seal a move but they too were unable to secure a deal. Liverpool are now attempting to get a move for Wirtz over the line having submitted three bids for the 22-year-old - the latest of which being a guaranteed £100m with around £14m in add-ons. According to Sky Germany, a move is expected to be completed next week, with Wirtz set to undergo a medical once he returns from holiday. Should all of the add-ons in the deal be met, Wirtz would become the most expensive player in British football history. And that is exactly the reason why Bayern were not able to compete. Sporting director Max Eberl said to Sky Germany: "If I'm honest, I don't know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now. Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player. We could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens." Eberl is not the first Bayern chief to speak out on their failed move for Wirtz. Club president Herbert Hainer dropped the bombshell news last month that their bid had failed. He said: "[Director of sport] Max Eberl has informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool. I can't say how things will continue with Leverkusen." Meanwhile, former Liverpool star Dietmarr Hamann revealed that Wirtz and his family were left convinced by the way the Reds went about their attempts in signing the midfielder and hailed the move. He said: "Florian Wirtz has made a decision. I believe it's the right one. Will Florian Wirtz be a good signing for Liverpool? Share your thoughts in the comments below "Things are really happening at Liverpool under Arne Slot. They'll sign, or want to sign, two or three other players, from what I hear. That's why I think Wirtz has made a very good decision." He added: "Liverpool is a global club, and they've demonstrated that in the negotiations. They've probably been in contact with Florian Wirtz for weeks or months, and they've never heard anything. "I think the Wirtz family was also impressed by how they handled it: discreetly, quietly, all in the background." Once a deal for Wirtz is done, he would become the second star to arrive from Bayer Leverkusen this summer after Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong. Liverpool have also signed promising young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. The 20-year-old played 20 times for Bayern's second team in the German fourth tier last season, scoring six goals and assisting five. Read more: Out of contract in Bavaria this summer, Demircan is said to have turned down a move to Ibrox in favour of joining Dutch Eredivisie outfit FC Utrecht, with whom he has completed a medical. Fabrizio Romano issued the update earlier today: 🚨🇹🇷 EXCL: Turkish talent and U21 international Emirhan Demircan leaves Bayern to join FC Utrecht as a free agent. Contract until 2028, medical done. 🇳🇱 Top scorer FC Bayern II, he turned down offers from Besiktas, Glasgow Rangers and Hoffenheim to join Utrecht. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 12, 2025 Demircan could have become the first new signing of the Russell Martin era, had the move been finalised. The 39-year-old was appointed as Rangers' new head coach last week, penning a three-year deal at Ibrox. One of his successors, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, is reportedly nearing a return to club football. Indeed, The Athletic claims that the Dutchman, who led Rangers to the 2022 Europa League final, is 'close' to joining Liverpool as part of Arne Slot's backroom team. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no."
