21 CBI officers awarded medals on Independence Day eve
DIG Vivek Priyadarshi, who is known for his investigation into the 2G corruption case, Vyapam, and cases related to West Bengal post-poll violence, has been awarded the coveted President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
DIG Machhindra Ramchandra Kadole, who probed cases related to gangster Chota Rajan, corruption in the Palace on Wheels train, Ponzi scam and post poll violence cases in West Bengal, has also been awarded the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Kadole also served as the police advisor in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
He was posted at Juba, South Sudan, as the contingent commander of the Indian police contingent for the mission, and received a UN medal for his services.
ASP Bandi Peddiraju, who led the probe into the NEET UG 2024 paper leak case, social media posts against Andhra Pradesh High Court judges, Paritala Ravi murder case, and cyber crime cases related to tech support scams impersonating Microsoft and Amazon, has also been honoured with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Peddiraju, who rose from the ranks of a constable, has 150 awards to his name, including the Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Investigation for 2019.
Additional SP Ch Venkata Narendra Deve, Deputy SP Vishal, and Head Constable Abhijit Sen have also been awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service.
Fifteen CBI officers have been awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service, an agency spokesperson said.
DIG Anoop T Mathew, Deputy Legal Advisors Bal Karan Singh, Subhash Chandra Sharma, Additional SP Sunil Dutt, Deputy SPs Ashok Kumar, K Vijaya Vaishnavi, Ajay Singh Gahlaut, Crime Assistant Dilbagh Singh Jasrotia, ASI Pawan Kumar Bhardwaj, Head Constables Mohan Singh Jadaun, Arabinda Garai and Chitimireddy Suryanarayan Reddy, Constables Satish Kumar, Rambabu Yedida, and Naval Kumar Dixit have been awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service, the spokesperson said. The summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin ended without any concrete outcomes regarding the ending of the war in Ukraine, currently in its fourth year. It was clear after the meeting in Alaska that Trump had given up his push for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine while Putin had demanded that Ukraine should give up control of the entire Donbas region, including areas that have not been taken by Russian troops. However, Ukraine has already ruled out any territorial concessions while European leaders have expressed doubts about Putin's intentions, pointing out that he has not delivered on past commitments. The planned meeting between Trump, Zelensky and other European leaders on Monday is expected to offer indications of the way forward, though it will be foolhardy for the Europeans to expect the US to play its traditional role even though they have no choice but to continue with Trump as the only broker who has a direct line to Putin. The Indian government, which followed the Alaska summit closely because of Trump's threat of resorting to secondary sanctions against the country after imposing a 25% tariff over the continued purchases of Russian oil, has welcomed the Alaska summit and commended Putin and Trump for their pursuit of peace. The Indian side's wish for an early end to the conflict in Ukraine will require more protracted diplomacy.

14 years after Paramakudi riots, CBI refuses to disclose status of investigation under RTI Act
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has declined to share details of its probe into the 2011 Paramakudi riots under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. Fourteen years after seven persons belonging to the Scheduled Caste were killed and many others injured in police firing and the violence that followed on September 11, 2011, at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district the CBI's Special Crimes Branch in Chennai invoked exemption provisions of the Act to reject queries about the status of the case. The RTI Act petition was filed by C. Selvakumar, who sought copies of the FIR, names of investigating officers, details of accused persons, and information on whether any interim or final report had been filed in the case. In his response, the Chief Public Information Officer said: 'In view of the provisions under Section 8(1)(g), 8(1)(h) and Section 24 of the RTI Act, the requisite information cannot be provided to you and accordingly your application is rejected.' Mr Selvakumar's first appeal alleging the response was incomplete, false and misleading was dismissed by the First Appellate Authority, which upheld the CPIO's decision. He then approached the Central Information Commission (CIC). After hearing both parties, Information Commissioner Anandi Ramalingam ruled that the CBI was exempted from disclosure under Section 25 of the RTI Act. While closing the appeal, she directed the agency not to cite Section 8(1)(h) and Section 24 together to deny information. Enquiry commission's findings A one-man commission of inquiry headed by Justice Sampath had earlier concluded that the police opened fire in 'self-defence.' The report praised the officers for the 'admirable way' in which they handled the tense situation but criticised the conduct of some personnel after the riots, calling it 'disgraceful' and contrary to police standing orders, citing instances of rioters being beaten up. However, the State government rejected what it described as the commission's 'disparaging remarks' against the police. The firing occurred when large numbers of members of the Scheduled Caste assembled in Paramakudi to pay homage to their leader Immanuel Sekaran on his 54th death anniversary. Violence broke out after the arrest of Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) leader John Pandian, whose supporters demanded his release. The protest escalated, leading to riots, arson, injuries to policemen, and the subsequent firing. Prosecution sanction withheld Police sources said the CBI, which took over the probe on the orders of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, had sought the State government's sanction to prosecute certain officers. The then AIADMK government denied the request. As a result, the case has not yet been chargesheeted. It was not clear whether a departmental inquiry or disciplinary action was insisted any official for the high-handedness, some of which was captured on camera, in the riots, the sources said.

Wrong side driving, triple-seat, no helmet: 10,000 vehicles challaned in Mumbai for flouting norms on Dahi Handi
A day after the Dahi Handi festival, Mumbai Police on Sunday said that they have imposed challans on more than 10,000 vehicles with fines of over ₹ 1 crore for violation of traffic rules, PTI quoted officials as saying. Held to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the festival was celebrated on Saturday wherein a large number of troupes comprising young men and women formed human pyramids to break dahi handis (pots of curd) suspended in the air with ropes. To participate in the festivities, people travelled in groups on two-wheelers and other vehicles. However, Mumbai police took action against people flouting norms during the festival and imposed fines. The official added that the Mumbai Traffic Police issued a total of 10,051 spot e-challans with penalties of ₹ 1,13,57,250 on vehicles, which included fines for driving without a helmet, wrong-side driving, triple-seat driving and over-speeding. He added that scanning of CCTV footage in various areas was underway and more challans will be issued electronically if violations are found. Atleast two people died and more than 300 sustained injuries during the 'Dahi Handi' festival in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane city, PTI quoted civic officials as saying. Out of the 318 persons injured in Mumbai, only 24, including a nine-year-old boy, have been hospitalised while the rest were discharged after treatment on Saturday. According to officials, the highest number of 135 people were injured during the festivities in the island city, followed by 111 and 72 in the western and eastern suburbs, respectively. In the neighbouring Thane city, 22 participants were injured while attempting human pyramids, local civic body's disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said. Of them, 17 were admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, including some who suffered head injuries, shoulder dislocations, waist and chest injuries, he said.
