BBC News14-07-2025
A further six men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed to death in a park in West Yorkshire. The 36-year-old man died after officers were called to a disturbance involving a group of men in Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury Moor, on Saturday night, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said. The men arrested are aged between 18 and 44, with some being arrested in Kirklees and some outside West Yorkshire. The arrests bring the total number of men in custody to nine.Police said crime scenes remained in place at the park and on nearby Pilgrim Drive and Pilgrim Crescent, while detailed forensic searches took place.
People who live near the park have spoken of their shock at what happened. Mohammed Sadiq, 50, knew the man who died and said he played in the park as a child. "It's sad, I used to be a taxi driver and I used to pick him up a lot, he was a very popular guy," he said."It makes you realise that life is too short."He has grown up around here, he played around here when he was a kid."I hope his family find peace and they can find a way to get through this. It's going to be very hard for them."He was a good lad, it's unfortunate what's happened."Mr Sadiq said he felt safe at the park, but it did make him wary about what had happened so close to his home.
Brian and Glenys Asquith said they walked in the park several times a week. Mrs Asquith, 79, said it was a "lovely park" and they loved visiting it. But Mr Asquith, 78, said: "You used to see a policeman walking around nearly every week, but you don't see anything now."I think it's a deterioration of our law and order, it's everywhere."
Mo, who lives nearby, said he had heard about the man's death on Saturday night, through a video on social media. "It shouldn't have happened, it's not good something like this happening," he said. "I've been coming here for years so to be honest I do feel safe here, it's nothing to do with the park."
Susan Master, 64, said she often visited the park with her grandchildren and it was "unbelievable" what had happened. "It's absolutely terrible, I don't know what's gone on but somebody's life has been lost here," she said. "It is such a shame because it's a lovely park, it is unbelievable what's happened. I feel sorry for the family I really do. "Such a young life taken, it's really, really terrible."Flowers have been left at the entrance to the park, in tribute to the man who died. Mrs Master added: "I saw the flowers first thing this morning when I brought my grandchild to school, and I felt so sorry for them."We always come for a walk around here and we enjoy it so much, it is frightening to know what's gone on. "A young life taken like that for whatever reason, it's not good enough is it?"She added that she did feel scared, but needed to carry on as "you can't let something like this change everything".Det Ch Insp James Entwistle said: "Wide ranging and fast moving enquiries remain ongoing with a large number of arrests now made."He said the force was "working tirelessly to establish the full circumstances of the fatal attack" and that there was believed to be no threat to other members of the public.

The moment he knew he'd been caught: Bryan Kohberger's stone-faced glare at arresting officer at his parents home

A never-before-seen image of convicted killer Bryan Kohberger has shown the moment he knew he was caught for the gruesome deaths of four innocent Idaho college students. The 30-year-old criminology Ph.D student murdered Madison Mogen, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20 Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Xana Kernodle, 20, on November 13, 2022 after sneaking into their home in Moscow. For about a month, police searched for the person responsible - until December 30 when they nabbed Kohberger. The image, which showed the twisted killer donning a stone-faced expression at one of the arresting officers, was taken after authorities stormed his parents' home in Pennsylvania. He looked directly at the camera as he sat down, wearing a black hoodie and black shorts with his hands restrained behind his back. 'I'll never forget - my phone dinged and I looked at it and it said, "We got him,"' Moscow Police Chief Anthony Dahlinger told ABC News. 'The next thing on, there was a picture of him in handcuffs from the scene.' Dahlinger recalled the sense of 'relief' he felt in that moment, adding: 'So being able to share that information with the community, I can only imagine that many of us in the community felt the same when we knew we had him.' Just before his arrest, it appeared Kohberger was 'sorting through garbage, with gloves on,' Idaho State Police Lt. Darren Gilbertson, a lead investigator in the blockbuster case, told the outlet. He was among those who interviewed Kohberger the day of his arrest, as he recalled the murderer being 'expressionless.' Despite his demeanor, which has been on full display since the tragedy made headlines three years ago, Gilbertson said he noticed Kohberger still liked to 'speak to you and teach and enlighten you' during his interview. 'We started with just very general questions about Pullman, about WSU ... he spoke at length about that with us,' the detective recollected. The murderer went on to ask Gilbertson why he was being interviewed, but when he found it was related to the fatal stabbings in Moscow, he stopped talking. 'As soon as we mentioned that, then he stopped, and he said, "I don't want to talk anymore",' Gilbertson said. 'We asked if he was familiar with it, if he knew anything about Moscow, and he said, no ... and stopped right then and said he wanted an attorney.' Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison on July 23 as the victims' families spoke directly to him with their emotional and powerful impact statements. He was handed four life sentences for each death plus 10 more years for the burglary charge related to the murders. He was supposed to stand trial for the deaths that would have seen him possibly get the death penalty, but just weeks before his sentencing Kohberger entered a plea deal. Instead of getting the death penalty, he will now remain locked behind bars for the rest of his life. He is being held in the 'J' block of the Idaho Maximum Security Institution near Boise - the most restricted prisons in the area. Following his sentencing, a trove of investigation documents were released by the Moscow Police Department. Within the lengthy documents, it was sadly revealed how one of the victim's, Goncalves, was so badly injured by Kohberger's knife that she looked 'unrecognizable' by the time he claimed her life. 'I was unable to comprehend exactly what I was looking at while trying to discern the nature of the injuries,' a cop wrote in the files. Goncalves was stabbed a total of 34 times, with many of those wounds left on her face at the student home. Unlike Kohberger's other three victims, who only had stab wounds, Golcalves also suffered blunt force injuries. Another officer on the scene described seeing Kernodle's body in her bedroom covered in blood, with defensive wounds to her hands, including a deep gash between her finger and thumb. She was stabbed more than 50 times. 'It was obvious an intense struggle had occurred,' the officer wrote. 'There was blood smeared on various items in the room and all over the floor.' Kernodle's boyfriend Chapin was found partially covered with a blanket in her bed, with his jugular severed, the police files said. On the floor above, officers found the bodies of Mogen and Goncalves. Mogen had wounds to her forearm, hands and a gash from her right eye to her nose. Both were covered in blood, which had soaked the pink blanket they were sharing. Kohberger left behind a Ka-Bar leather knife sheath next to Mogen's body. DNA on the clasp was traced back to the killer using Investigative Genetic Genealogy.

Woman, 31, who mugged her OAP partner on bus and called him ‘dirty dog' in terrifying broad daylight attack is jailed

A WOMAN who mugged her OAP partner on a bus and called him a "dirty dog" in the terrifying broad daylight attack has been jailed. Katie Bland turned violent against her partner and a woman trying to help - telling her she would "knock her jaw off". 2 2 Bland, 31, from Greetland, West Yorkshire, and the victim - a man in his 70s - had a tumultuous relationship that reached its boiling point on January 6 this year. Prosecutor Nathan Davis told Bradford Crown Court on Friday: "He left after an argument and she would call him and be abusive and ask for money." At around 4pm, Bland discovered he was at a bus station in Halifax and travelled to him where she called him a racist word and a "dirty dog". She then proceeded to grab him by the collar of his coat and throw him around as she cruelly demanded cash. The pensioner offered Bland £20 - but she wanted his bank card. She then became aggressive when he refused to hand it over, instead offering the alternative of going to a cash point together to withdraw money. It was on the journey she became more violent and began kicking him in the leg and screaming at him. A woman who was witnessing the horror abuse then tried to intervene but Bland turned on her - grabbing her by the scarf and threatening to "knock her jaw off" if she "didn't shut the f*** up". Bland then continued to assault the elderly man and even managed to withdraw £40 from his bank account before cops showed up. She was arrested and answered "no comment" in her interview. Manhunt Launched in Northampton: River Nene Murder Investigation Underway Bland went on to admit robbery, assault by beating, fraud and blackmail. In his statement, the man said he has "never been so depressed or worried" in all of his life. His statement, read by prosecutor Nathan Davis, said: "I wake up and don't know how she is going to be. "I get abused daily. I lost all of my friends for my relationship. "My friends have told me what she is like and asks for money to buy drugs. "'Her behaviour is the last weeks has become worse. It has affected me to the point I want to give up with life. "I never want to come home due to the mess she has left in my house." The court heard how Bland, who appeared over a video link from HMP New Hall, had previous convictions on her record. She was actually the subject of a suspended sentence for another robbery at the time she committed those she fell to be sentenced for on Friday. Mitigating, Shila Whitehead, said: "What she tells me is she has been in custody since January. "She said she is aware her behaviour towards him was unacceptable and she is willing to accept help "She accepts at the time of committing these offences she was using drugs and was heavily dependant on them."
