Hindustan Times17-07-2025
The Tesla Model Y L will be 179 mm longer and 44 mm taller than the standard wheelbase version, adding a third row to the cabin Check Offers
Just days after making its India debut, Tesla has announced plans to launch the Model Y L, the long-wheelbase variant of the Model Y, in China. The new automaker dropped the teasers for the new Tesla Model Y L on Weibo, one of the most popular social media platforms in China, while details of the upcoming offering were leaked online as the automaker applied for a new sales license with China's Ministry of Information Technology.
Tesla Model Y Long-Wheelbase: Longer & Taller With 3 Rows
The new Tesla Model Y long-wheelbase will be a six-seater version with three rows. Leaked details reveal the Model Y L will be 4.98 metres long, 1.92 metres wide, and 1.67 metres tall. Compared to the standard version, the long-wheelbase model will measure 179 mm longer and 44 mm taller, with no change in the width of the vehicle. Notably, Tesla retails the three-row version of the Model Y in China, albeit as an option with limited legroom. Apart from the longer wheelbase and new seating configuration, the Tesla Model Y L will get a modified rear and a new spoiler.

The Tesla Model Y L is expected to arrive with the dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive. The motor on the front axle produces 190 bhp while the rear-axle motor develops 265 bhp, making for a combined output of 456 bhp. The top speed is restricted at 201 kmph. The full details, including the battery and range, haven't been revealed.
The Tesla Model Y L will arrive later this year in China. This will be the second major update for the Model Y lineup since the heavily updated Model Y Juniper went on sale earlier this year in the market, but failed to liven up the automaker's flagging sales. Globally, the Model Y is Tesla's bestselling offering with over 1.1 million units sold since 2019. In China, Tesla has sold over 171,000 units of the Model Y since the start of this year, while the brand's total sales stood at 263,400 units, ending June 30, witnessing a 5.4 per cent drop year-on-year.

The new long-wheelbase Tesla Model Y is also being seen as the carmaker's response to newer three-row EVs in China. The Model Y L will be produced at Tesla's Gigafactory in Shanghai with LG Energy Solution supplying the batteries. It will be positioned between the Model Y and Model X in the brand's lineup. Tesla Model Y India Launch
Tesla announced its India entry with the launch of the Model Y. The automaker also opened its first experience centre in Mumbai. The Tesla Model Y is priced from ₹ 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards and arrives in the rear-wheel drive guise. The Full Self-Drive (FSD) option is available at a premium of ₹ 6 lakh but will be rolled out later. The Model Y comes to India as a full import from China.

Elon Musk and Tesla's $30 trillion AI supersonic tsunami

Tesla shareholders are used to volatility. Shares dipped 8% on Thursday after Tesla reported second-quarter earnings. Shares bounced about 4% on Friday. Coming into the week of trading, Tesla stock was down 22% year to date and up about 44% over the past 12 months. Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered some pretty eye-popping aspirations for the company during remarks on Saturday. Musk made a virtual appearance at the Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley 2025 'Takeover" party in San Mateo, Calif. The group is, essentially, a fan club and community for Tesla and Musk enthusiasts. Its Takeover event draws attendees from all over the world, according to organizers. The headline from the event might just have been an admittedly aspirational comment about $30 trillion a year in humanoid robot revenue. Tesla is using its artificial intelligence and manufacturing capabilities to build its Optimus humanoid robots. Version three of 'Optimus is the right design to go to volume production," said Musk. Tesla plans to make a few hundred of those by the end of 2025. Originally, Tesla planned to have a few thousand, but the new design slowed things down a little. Tesla still plans to ramp production higher in 2026. Tesla is betting big on AI, using it for robots and to train its self-driving cars. Robots are 'probably the world's biggest product…There's a market for 20 billion robots," said Musk. 'Hypothetically, if Tesla was making one billion of these a year…maybe on the order of $30,000, I'm just guessing here, that's $30 trillion in revenue." It's an incredible prediction. 'Long way to go between here and making one billion robots a year," added Musk. There isn't a significant market for humanoid robots yet. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said that robots can become the world's largest market. (Housing, consumer electronics, and cars are three of the largest today.) The world spends 'what $50 trillion on human labor a year now?" says Futurum chief market strategist Shay Boloor. Useful robots are 'pretty disruptive if you can conquer it." Musk, for his part, doesn't fear the labor disruption, believing it will end up creating an age of abundance with hard labor essentially eliminated. 'I've never seen any technology advance as fast as AI," said Musk, describing it as a supersonic tsunami. It's all pie in the sky for now, but quite a vision of the future. Investors should pay attention to events like the 'Takeover." It's almost like a Wall Street event for the EV maker. Tesla is more of a retail stock than the megacap companies. Smaller retail investors hold more than 40% of the shares available for trading, according to Bloomberg. The average for the rest of the Magnificent Seven is closer to 25%. Whether the interview will move Tesla's stock on Monday is anyone's guess. Shares dipped 8% on Thursday after Tesla reported second-quarter earnings on Wednesday evening. Shares bounced about 4% on Friday. Coming into the week of trading, Tesla stock was down 22% year to date and up about 44% over the past 12 months. Shares are trading for about 180 times estimated 2025 earnings. That's the second-highest PE ratio in the S&P 500, according to Bloomberg, trailing only Palantir Technologies. That valuation indicates that, to some extent, investors are as optimistic about the future. Write to Al Root at

After Tesla, Vietnamese EV maker VinFast enters India, opens first showroom in Gujarat

Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) maker VinFast has opened its first showroom in Surat, Gujarat, marking its official entry into the Indian market. This significant step precedes the inauguration of its manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, underscoring the company's commitment to establishing a strong presence in the country's growing EV sector. The company entered India shortly after the long-awaited inauguration of the Elon Musk-owned Tesla showroom in Mumbai. The new dealership, 'VinFast Surat', is promoted by Chandan Car, a leading name in India's automotive retail sector located in Piplod in Surat. The facility will offer product experiences, vehicle purchase journeys, and after-sales support. The dealership will serve as a one-stop destination for VinFast's prospective buyers. Additionally, the company aims to launch 35 dealerships by year-end, across 27 plus cities, ANI reported. The Surat showroom will feature VinFast's upcoming range of premium electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7. Notably, India is the first market where VinFast is launching the right-hand drive version of these models. Pre-bookings for both VF 6 and VF 7 models officially opened on July 15, 2025. Customers can now book their preferred vehicle either at the exclusive showrooms or through the official website, with a fully refundable booking amount of ₹ 21,000. The VF 6 is a compact electric SUV with a five-seater system designed for families and comes with a panoramic roof and touchscreen. It is expected to be priced between ₹ 18 lakh to ₹ 24 lakh. On the other hand, the VF 7, a mid-size SUV offers a premium cabin with a large touchscreen, wireless charging and advanced connected technology. It's likely to be priced between ₹ 30 lakh and ₹ 35 lakh. Pham Sanh Chau, CEO, VinFast Asia, said, "The first VinFast Showroom in Surat, Gujarat is a symbol of our deep commitment to India. We are excited to bring the VinFast experience closer to Indian consumers.' India is becoming an attractive spot of international investments, especially in the EV sector. This happened ever since the government introduced a new scheme to encourage global auto firms to make electric cars in India. The scheme will allow companies to import a limited number of electric cars at an import duty of 15 per cent, which is much lower than the existing duties of 70-110 per cent, Mint reported earlier.
