Maintenance work at Kimanis gas terminal rescheduled
KOTA KINABALU (July 31): The integrated maintenance work at Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal
(SOGT) Kimanis which was originally scheduled to begin from August 1 to 7 has been rescheduled to August 5 to 11.
According to ECoS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, this rescheduling was decided in a joint meeting between ECoS, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and grid system operator yesterday.
This rescheduling is to provide room for the completion of repair works on damaged units belonging to Sabah Electricity and independent power producers, reliability testing of the independent power producers' operations in Kimanis using diesel fuel, and also the completion of additional Battery Energy
Storage System capacity of 40MW.
This rescheduling will be able to significantly reduce the impact of power supply rationing to consumers in Sabah should it be needed for the stability of the Sabah grid network.
According to Nasser further, the integrated maintenance work at SOGT together with offshore assets is a mandatory requirement to renew the Certificate of Fitness (CF) by the Department of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) to ensure that the assets involved always operate meeting the stipulated safety standards.
Throughout this maintenance work, gas supply will be shut off to two independent power plants namely Kimanis Power Plant and SPR Energy which will operate using diesel fuel.
'In addition, gas pipeline connection work for a new generation project currently being built by Sabah Electricity in Kimanis with a capacity of 100MW will also be implemented which can only be done during this gas supply shutdown.
With the completion of this project in the third quarter of 2025 together with other generation enhancement initiatives, it will be able to increase the Sabah Grid generation reserve margin
from the current 17% to 30%. As a record, the reserve margin in 2023 was less than 10%.
This increase in reserve margin is very necessary to add resilience to the Sabah Grid in
case of damage to several generation plants.
Abdul Nasser added that, apart from efforts to increase generation capacity (supply side), electricity users can also play a role from the load demand aspect (demand side). The easiest method
is to use electricity in an energy-efficient manner and electricity usage that can be done after peak hours, which is after 9 pm.
Earlier yesterday, Sabah Electricity Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob H. Jaafar anounced that electricity supply in Sabah and Labuan would be rationed from August 1 to 7 due to scheduled maintenance at the SOGT owned by Petronas.
An estimated 200,000 account holders will be affected, with power outages lasting one to two hours on a rotational basis.

She also completed the Executive Programme in London Business School on Executing Strategy for Results. Prior to her appointment, Saadiah was an Independent Director of Suria Strategic Resources Sdn Bhd, an energy related infrastructure company which is a 100% owned entity of the Malaysia Ministry of Finance Inc. [UPDATED] Unity government delivers more to Sabah, says Anwar
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the unity government has provided Sabah with more infrastructure, funding and recognition of its rights than previous administrations. "As compared to 2025 under the previous administration between 2021 and 2022, we have increased the allocation for Sabah to RM16 billion. That is no small amount. "In 2022, the special grant stood at RM125.6 million. Now that we are in power, we have increased it by RM600 million," he said during the closing ceremony of the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen event at the Sabah International Convention Centre here. Anwar also said that the 350-kilometre Pan Borneo Highway Phase 1B has already been tendered under the Unity Government. As for electricity, which was previously fully under the federal government, it has now been handed over to the Sabah government, including continued subsidies for seven years until 2030, with RM3.54 billion allocated to support utility company Sabah Electricity in the state. "Because of the spirit of MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963), there are matters that can be handled by the state government. Any project below RM50 million is handed to Sabah's Public Works Department (JKR)." In 2023, the federal government allocated RM300 million to address water supply issues. An upcoming Sabah Heart Centre at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital is also in the pipeline. He said politicians should focus on delivering results while in office, rather than criticising those in power only after leaving their posts. "Anyone can gather thousands of people; those with money can assemble a crowd. "But what matters is whether we can foster understanding, uplift dignity, and ensure that these gatherings bring meaningful change and improve livelihoods or are we merely stoking anger and hatred without achieving any real outcomes? "That's why we say in the world of politics, administration, and the economy, we must focus. We can talk at length, but if we don't focus on the task at hand, we cannot deliver results. And when we demonstrate our capability, we can achieve things previously thought impossible." Present at the event were Agriculture and Food Security minister Datuk Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, deputy chief minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, state finance minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun and state secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong.
