Thane, Aug 9 (PTI) Transgenders tied rakhis to members of Hindu and Muslim communities, police personnel, and people from various walks of life at an event to mark the Rakshabandhan festival in Thane.
The 16th edition of the Hindu-Muslim Rakshabandhan event was organised by Town/Nagar Police Station in collaboration with the Mahagiri Committee.
Members of the Kinnar (transgender) community tied rakhis to participants as part of a special awareness initiative, a release stated.

‘Direct attack on India's secular, democratic values': Documentary screening at TISS to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day draws flak from student bodies
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai held a screening of the documentary Demography is Destiny on Thursday to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, drawing criticism from multiple student organisations who alleged the film promotes a biased and communal narrative. In a statement issued to announce the programme earlier, TISS said the film explores India's shifting demographic trends through census data, historical records, and regional case studies. It highlights a decline in the majority community's population from 82 per cent in 1881 to approximately 79 per cent in 2011, with future projections estimating a drop to 67 per cent. The statement said documentary — directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Ravindra Sanghvi — also focuses on regions such as Kashmir, Assam, Bengal, and Western Uttar Pradesh, where it claims significant increases in the Muslim population, partly attributed to illegal immigration. The documentary, the statement said, also discusses themes of infiltration, religious conversions, and the declining Hindu fertility rate. Sunil Ambekar, Akhil Bharat Prachar Pramukh of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was the chief guest. As the news of the screening spread on campus, it prompted backlash from students. Five student organisations — the Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA), Muslim Students' Federation (MSF), All India Students Federation (AISF), Progressive Students' Forum (PSF), and Satyashodhak Vidyarthi Sanghatna (SVS) — issued statements condemning the event. They called the film 'agenda-driven' and raised questions on the academic and secular values of TISS, a prominent social science institute. In their public statements, the students' groups claimed that the documentary spreads fear through unverified claims about religious conversions and infiltration, with the AISF calling it 'a direct attack on India's secular, democratic values.' ASA described it as aligning with an 'RSS worldview,' while PSF stated it aimed to 'create religious hatred and communal polarisation.' SVS raised concerns about the credibility of the data used in the film and questioned its relevance in an academic setting. Questioning the choice of chief guest for the event, Amir Kazi, Mumbai President, AISF, said, 'The institute has been discouraging student-led political activity while inviting a political figure to campus.' Despite the criticism by student organisations, the TISS administration said there was no opposition to the event. 'We have not received any letter of opposition from any student organisation. In fact, the event was held smoothly without any protest,' a TISS source said.

Viral videos capture chilling moments as cloudburst hits Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar village
Jammu and Kashmir: Kishtwar's Chasoti village experienced massive destruction after a cloudburst struck the remote village on Thursday, killing at least 37 people, injuring 100 as flash floods tore through. Viral videos on social media captured chilling scenes with cars stuck in floodwaters, muddy gusts of water swallowing what were earlier stretches of lush green land. Flash floods tore through the densely populated foothill hamlet, damaging several homes and forcing authorities to halt the annual yatra to the Machail Mata shrine. Chasoti is the last motorable village on the way to the Machail Mata temple, from where begins the 8.5 km trek to the shrine. Another clip showed cars lined up along the roadside while people cautiously made their way across a bridge, with floodwaters roaring beneath the bridge. Not just the videos, but multiple images from news wires revealed the harrowing destruction as locals also helped with the rescue efforts. Officials, according to PTI, said 98 people have been rescued so far, of which 28 people are in serious condition. 100 injured, 98 people rescued The news of cloudburst reached officials around 11:30 am after which SDRF, local police, other teams reached the spot, said Jammu's Divisional Commissioner. Search, rescue operations are underway, and the Army, Navy, Air Force teams had also been informed, the commissioner told ANI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths, and stated that 'every possible assistance will be provided to those in need.' The Army said that relief stores, medical teams and rescue gear have been rushed to the site. Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah had briefed Amit Shah about the situation. He stated that the 'news is grim and accurate, verified information from the area hit by the cloud burst is slow in arriving. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to X to announce that cancelled 'cultural events during Independence Day celebrations on Friday, and 'At Home' tea party has been cancelled 'in light of the tragedy caused by the cloudburst.'

Himachal CM Sukhu inaugurates state-level Van Mahotsav
Shimla, Aug 14 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav at Kanlog in Shimla, and said that around 9,000 hectares of forest land this year would be planted with trees under different schemes. Sukhu added 60 per cent of these saplings would bear fruits as he also planted a deodar sapling during the event. Additionally, he launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna across all Assembly constituencies and virtually interacted with ministers and MLAs participating in the programme, and discussed forest conservation and afforestation measures in detail. Addressing a gathering on this occasion, he said that Van Mahotsav highlights the importance of forests, often called the Earth's lifeline. He said that the state government was working to protect and enrich the bio-diversity of the state. 'These efforts will contribute to achieve the target of increasing 30 per cent forest cover by 2030," he added. The chief minister said that the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana would not only promote forest development, but also enhance public participation and strengthen the rural economy. 'Under this scheme, mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self-help groups and joint forest committees would plant and look after saplings on one to five hectares of designated forest land for five years. A budget provision of Rs 100 crore has been made for this purpose," he said. He said that the state government was also focusing on financial discipline for 'vyavastha parivartan' and introducing various reforms in the working of the Forest department. 'The officers are being encouraged to dedicate more time to field work related to forest expansion and conservation rather than office routines," he said. He also gave cheques of Rs one lakh each to different mahila mandals for tree plantation under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. Apart from this, cheques of Rs 50,000 each have also been distributed under the JICA project.
