Bengal reports 58 active Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours; 10-month-old child in ICU
On Saturday, West Bengal recorded 58 more Covid-19 cases, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 622.
With this, the state became the fourth-highest Covid-positive state in the country, only after Kerala, Gujarat, and Delhi.
According to the health department, a two-year-old child and a 10-month-old toddler have been admitted to a private hospital, off EM Bypass.
Sources said the baby with breathing issues is in the ICU in the pediatric ward of the hospital with breathing issues.
Covid-testing counters have also been opened at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
Sources in the health department stated that a report has been sent to the Central health department informing the steps taken by the state, the current figures of hospital admissions and the condition of patients.
The number of active cases in Kolkata city has seen a sharp rise by the end of May, as per records.
At the beginning of May, the city had only one positive case.
There has also been one death in the state due to Covid.
Meanwhile, a war of wards has broken out after Leader of Opposition Suvendhu Adhikari on Friday accused the state government of hiding the actual Covid patients in the state.
'The way dengue data is being withheld, the Covid situation is also being obscured. This is a clear attempt to hide the truth from the people. This is not merely an administrative lapse; it reflects a serious disregard for the health and safety of ordinary citizens,' he said.
However, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya refuted Adhikari's allegation.
Bhattacharya said that the health sector is a state government issue.
'We are not interested in what someone is saying The Centre is aware of what we are doing. A meeting was held a few days ago by the Central Government which I had attended. Several issues were discussed. The Opposition leader may not know this. The Centre heaped praise after listening to what steps the Mamata Banerjee government has taken to check various diseases.'
Though the state health department is yet to issue a health advisory, the Kolkata Corporation has decided to raise awareness on precautionary measures.
According to sources, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be putting up banners in all its health units across the city urging people to wash their hands, wear masks, and maintain social distancing.
The health workers in all wards have been directed to collect information regarding Covid symptoms, besides usual exercise of data collection of malaria or dengue.
They have been advised to isolate any person if found with influenza-like symptoms or severe acute respiratory symptoms (SARI).
With the rising cases, the health department said two isolation wards have been kept ready at ID Hospital in case the number spikes.

US scientists issue chilling warning, say new virus found in China one step away from spreading in..., HKU5-CoV-2 virus is found in...
Covid-19: Active cases surge to 3207, 29 deaths, 60% of cases in Kerala and Maharashtra COVID-19 has once again dominated the news headlines. A new virus has been detected in China following the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Independent report, Scientists suggest that the variant, known as HKU5-CoV-2, is likely to affect a wider range of animals than the original COVID-19 virus, which led to millions of deaths worldwide. It is to be noted that the new variant may pose a greater risk of spreading between species. American researchers have raised concerns that HKU5-CoV-2, detected in China in February, might also have the ability to infect humans, potentially triggering a large-scale outbreak. A new study published in Nature Communications studied a lesser-known group of coronaviruses referred to as merbecoviruses, which includes HKU5 and MERS-CoV — the virus that causes the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. Researchers from Washington State University studied how this new virus interacts with human cells. They discovered that a small alteration in the virus's spike protein would probably help it hook onto human ACE2 receptors located in the throat, mouth, and nose. HKU5-CoV-2 can infect and replicate within human cells in both the respiratory tract and the digestive tract. At present, the virus is found in bats, but with a small mutation, it could start spreading among people. This virus is similar to MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). The World Health Organization states that around 35% of those infected with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) succumb to the disease. Since its emergence in 2012, approximately 27 countries have reported cases, resulting in 858 confirmed deaths. The infection is primarily transmitted from camels.

Nellore reports seven Covid-19 cases, DM&HO intensifies vigilance
The health department on Saturday intensified Covid-19 monitoring and containment measures after seven positive cases were reported in SPSR Nellore district. The District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) has initiated several measures on the instructions of Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Andhra Pradesh. The VRDL (Virus Research And Diagnostic Laboratory Network) had conducted 12 RT-PCR tests on the patients at ACSR Government Medical College and General Hospital (GGH) and confirmed six Covid-19 cases in the combined Nellore district on Friday. Later, another case was reportedly found on Saturday. Nellore DM&HO Dr. V. Sujatha said that the department has immediately tested 27 persons who were primary contacts of the patients. Except one, rest of them tested negative. Now, the contacts of the person who tested positive will undergo the tests. All the patients are presently having mild symptoms and are staying at home isolation with good health condition. With the increasing Covid-19 cases across the State and country, the DM&HO has appointed District Surveillance Officer Dr. Bhaskar Singamsetty as a nodal officer to monitor the cases and submit the GGH preparedness assessment data through IHIP (Integrated Health Information Platform) portal. Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Bhaskar said, 'After Omicron, the individuals were found to be infected with the new Covid-19 subvariants—NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. These are mild variants with symptoms including cough, cold, throat pain and fever for three days. To stop spreading the disease, we have notified guidelines to the public to avoid mass gathering and wear masks.' About 1,000 kits for RAT (Rapid Antigen Tests) were distributed to 80 PHCs in the district. If anyone tested positive, they were immediately moved to the district hospital for the RT-PCR test as it is available only at GGH and few corporate hospitals like Narayana, Apollo and Medicover in the district, he said. The nodal officer further said, 'We are conducting house to house survey for identifying the primary and secondary contacts of the positive patients. We continuously follow-up the patients in home isolation for one week. The alerts were given to all PHCs and UPHCs regarding the influenza patients.' GGH Superintendent Dr. B. S. Naik said that a special ward has been set up with 30 beds for the Covid-19 patients in the pulmonology department having more than 14 doctors and 12 nurses. Apart from this, the GGH is ready to arrange another 40-bed ward for the Covid-19 patients if the number of cases go up.

Aarogya Samiksha Kendra: A single-window solution for healthcare management
The Gujarat government is set to inaugurate, in the next few days, a comprehensive health control room — Aarogya Samiksha Kendra — in Gandhinagar that will not only act as a review centre for all state and national health programmes but will also be the hub for health metrics analysis and command centre, especially in times of crisis or disasters. It will also act as a call centre facility for those seeking help from the 104 helpline as well as information on the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The review centre will be the long sought umbrella organisation that can issue commands down to the primary health care (PHC) level to better integrate health and medical services across the state, said a statement from the Health Department. Review of health metrics The Aarogya Samiksha Kendra will offer a platform for integration of the entire Health Department's data involving multiple metrics, including medical services, vaccination, maternal and child health, public health statistics, among others on its dashboard. This will allow senior health officials to take stock, identify gaps and implement corrective measures, and then convey them to the field health staff across one or all districts in the state. The communication module with its video conferencing facilities and click-to-dial features will enable top officials to not only pass down policy decisions to field staff and district level officers, but also call on individual officials or groups of personnel from a particular area to review progress. An official, familiar with the matter, said that this will also enable peer learning, collective brainstorming of ideas, corrective tactics and better implementation of health strategies at the ground level. Further, the kendra is also to be used for training the personnel of the Health Department. Teams from a single district or teams of one particular division from multiple districts can be called in and trained at the centre through audio-visual aids with the facilities set up at the kendra in Gandhinagar, according to the officials. Non-emergency 104 helpline The GVK-EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute) non-emergency call centre, with the 104 toll-free number, was moved to the new facility from Kathwada (Ahmedabad) in mid May, said an official. Another official from GVK-EMRI who runs this helpline said that the move was facilitated without dropping a single call. The call centre currently has 100 call takers with the number of people likely to increase incrementally as the operations expand gradually, according to the official. The call takers include doctors, counselors, clinical psychologists and paramedics who advise people not only on their 'sick' symptoms, but also make sure that if the patient appears to be in an emergency situation, to switch the call to the emergency centre and dispatch an ambulance to their location. Further, with an upsurge in Covid cases, the helpline also advises potential or actual Covid patients on home isolation, medication and, depending on their symptoms, ask them to visit a doctor. Health officials also said that the department wanted the kendra to be ready before monsoon as rains give rise to a lot of medical issues ranging from the spread of vector-borne diseases to pneumonia and other health problems caused in areas of flooding. Flooding also tends to disrupt vaccination processes and access to health services in under-developed districts. Monitoring of health scheme patients The call takers of the 104 helpline have also been co-opted into monitoring the vulnerable patients, enrolled in critical healthcare programmes run by the state and the Centre, including the PM-JAY programme. Pregnant women with sickle cell anemia, heart and kidney problems, weight less than 42 kg, low hemoglobin and high risk pregnancies who need to avail antenatal care and other treatment are given one-to-one calls and they are also given reminders in connection with their check-up dates. Parents of children who are underweight, malnourished or are suffering from debilitating diseases and are in treatment under the School Health Programme are called and reminded of check up and medication refill dates. This also includes vaccination programmes. High-risk TB patients undergoing treatment and patients who have experienced side effects of TB drugs during 15 days of treatment are called by the doctors. These include patients who have completed two, three, four and six months of TB treatment. Feedback and enquiries of patients undergoing treatment under PM-JAY and evaluation through the services of the helpline number has also started. Officials said that as the kendra achieves full operationality, more health services will be added to the profile. Disaster response: Command and control While the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) has already been operational for years now, the Health Department had wanted its own control room to be able to direct operations in times of natural disasters or cluster infections that need continuous and real-time monitoring at the state level. With the facilities at the Aarogya Samiksha Kendra, senior health officials will be able to pass on instructions and receive updates from the ground, enabling them to make decisions in view of the changing situation on the field, according to the officials. Giving an example, a source said, 'At the time of Cyclone Tauktae (in 2021), we first evacuated all the pregnant women. This was all done by the Health Department.' Similarly, in cases of localised infections or disease clusters, health staff on the ground can be given operational guidance from this centre.
