West Bengal reports 26 more Covid-19 cases, 2 babies admitted to Kolkata hospital

West Bengal recorded 26 new Covid-19 cases Sunday, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 622. The highest number of active cases in Kerala has been recorded Kerala, with 1,806 cases. This is followed by Gujarat, with 717 active cases, and Delhi, which has 665 active cases. According to sources from the health department, two infants, a three-month-old and a one-year-old, have been admitted to a private hospital on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The babies were brought in for check-ups due to high fever, cough, and cold symptoms. Suspecting Covid-19, the doctor conducted tests, which returned positive results, leading to their admission to the hospital. Counters for Covid testing have been opened at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Sources in the health department have reported that a report has been sent to the Centre detailing the actions taken by the state, the number of patients currently admitted to the hospital, and their present conditions. At the beginning of May, Kolkata had only one Covid-19 case. However, by the end of the month, there was a rapid increase in the number of cases. There has also been one death in the state due to the virus. According to sources in the hospitals, although the Covid symptoms are mild, the rising number of cases has led hospitals to increase the number of Covid beds in private facilities. While the health department has not yet issued any health advisory, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to raise awareness about the importance of taking precautionary measures. The KMC is set to display banners in all its health units across the city, encouraging people to wash their hands, wear masks, and maintain social distancing. Health workers in every ward have been instructed to gather information on Covid-19 symptoms in addition to their regular data collection related to malaria and dengue. They have also been advised to isolate any individuals exhibiting influenza-like symptoms or severe acute respiratory symptoms (SARI). With the rise in Covid-19 cases and heightened surveillance, health department sources report that two isolation wards have been prepared at ID Hospital in anticipation of a potential increase in cases.

Bengal reports 58 active Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours; 10-month-old child in ICU

On Saturday, West Bengal recorded 58 more Covid-19 cases, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 622. With this, the state became the fourth-highest Covid-positive state in the country, only after Kerala, Gujarat, and Delhi. According to the health department, a two-year-old child and a 10-month-old toddler have been admitted to a private hospital, off EM Bypass. Sources said the baby with breathing issues is in the ICU in the pediatric ward of the hospital with breathing issues. Covid-testing counters have also been opened at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Sources in the health department stated that a report has been sent to the Central health department informing the steps taken by the state, the current figures of hospital admissions and the condition of patients. The number of active cases in Kolkata city has seen a sharp rise by the end of May, as per records. At the beginning of May, the city had only one positive case. There has also been one death in the state due to Covid. Meanwhile, a war of wards has broken out after Leader of Opposition Suvendhu Adhikari on Friday accused the state government of hiding the actual Covid patients in the state. 'The way dengue data is being withheld, the Covid situation is also being obscured. This is a clear attempt to hide the truth from the people. This is not merely an administrative lapse; it reflects a serious disregard for the health and safety of ordinary citizens,' he said. However, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya refuted Adhikari's allegation. Bhattacharya said that the health sector is a state government issue. 'We are not interested in what someone is saying The Centre is aware of what we are doing. A meeting was held a few days ago by the Central Government which I had attended. Several issues were discussed. The Opposition leader may not know this. The Centre heaped praise after listening to what steps the Mamata Banerjee government has taken to check various diseases.' Though the state health department is yet to issue a health advisory, the Kolkata Corporation has decided to raise awareness on precautionary measures. According to sources, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be putting up banners in all its health units across the city urging people to wash their hands, wear masks, and maintain social distancing. The health workers in all wards have been directed to collect information regarding Covid symptoms, besides usual exercise of data collection of malaria or dengue. They have been advised to isolate any person if found with influenza-like symptoms or severe acute respiratory symptoms (SARI). With the rising cases, the health department said two isolation wards have been kept ready at ID Hospital in case the number spikes.

MCH intern held for rape, forced abortions

Kolkata: A 24-year-old Calcutta Medical College student from Malda was arrested by Patuli Woman PS cops in connection with allegations of sexual assault and forcing multiple abortions on his girlfriend without her consent or knowledge. A formal complaint had been filed at the police station by a 27-year-old woman, who resides outside Kolkata and is not involved with the health sector. Cops have gathered medical reports and CCTV footage. According to cops, the case was registered under sections 69/89 of the BNS Act, pertaining to sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means and causing miscarriage without the woman's consent. If convicted, the accused intern can face 10 years in prison. "The woman alleged the accused, who was her boyfriend, engaged in sexual intercourse with her on multiple occasions, resulting in three pregnancies. She said he subsequently forced her to undergo abortions," said joint CP (crime) Rupesh Kumar. The duo reportedly met in 2022. The first abortion was carried out in 2022 and the other two in 2024. The accused allegedly facilitated the abortions by administering pills to the woman. An officer said the woman's statement was recorded under Section 183 of the BNSS. "We conducted primary and medico-legal examinations of the woman. Witnesses were examined and relevant documents seized," an officer said. The accused, a resident of the New Boys Hostel GTD, was sent to judicial custody. Cops are probing whether his medical knowledge was misused in the alleged forced abortions. Cops recover 35L lost by Survey Park doc to digi arrest fraud

1 2 Kolkata: Cops have recovered around Rs 35 lakh of a total of Rs 1 crore that was lost by a Survey Park victim last Nov in a digital arrest fraud. The crime was planned and carried out from Bangur and Lake Town. Around Rs 28.4 lakh was returned to the victim, a doctor, at Lalbazar on Thursday even as six persons — all from Kolkata — have been arrested so far. "On Thursday, the IO of the Bank Fraud Section of Detective Department refunded the seized cash to the complainant, Utpal Bit, after getting an order from the court. A cash amount of Rs 28,37,400 was handed over. Earlier, Rs 1.7 lakh was blocked and restored. Another Rs 5 lakh is already blocked and under the process of refund," said Joint CP (crime, traffic) Rupesh Kumar. According to Kumar, the victim was falsely threatened with arrest, with the fraudsters taking the name of Mumbai Police, claiming Bit was involved in money laundering and later cheated him of Rs 1 crore through different transactions. The case has seen significant developments with the arrest of six suspects so far. Three — Subrata Mallick (32), Pankaj Mallick (36), and Bishnu Agarwal (51) — were recently apprehended from an office in Bangur Avenue, adding to the earlier arrests of Suraj Kumar Singh, Arman Akhtar Khan and Md Jahinuddin. Probe revealed a sophisticated money laundering operation where fraudsters converted the stolen funds into cryptocurrency. During raids, police seized crucial evidence including five mobile phones, two laptops, a cash counting machine, and four cheque books. Probe uncovered that Singh held the beneficiary account, while Khan managed its operations. The money was then passed through a chain involving Jahinuddin and Subrata Mallick before being converted to cryptocurrency. Sit said, "I retired in 2023 from Calcutta Medical College. In 2024, I received a call from fraudsters saying they were from Mumbai Police and working under instructions from CBI. They said I had opened several illegal accounts to siphon off money. I got scared and paid almost my entire life's savings. I approached KP when I realized there is no such things as digital arrest. I am thankful that cops have returned a substantial amount of my money. " Commissioner of police Manoj Verma has taken a strong stance against cybercrime, implementing structural changes to combat such incidents effectively. "Blocked funds must be returned to victims quickly and without obstacles," the commissioner said.
