Over $650k worth of assets restrained after man's arrest in FBI probe
More than $650,000 worth of assets have been restrained by police following the arrest of a Wellington-based man as part of an FBI investigation into a group that allegedly scammed several victims out of NZD$450 million in cryptocurrency.
The Wellington High Court has now issued restraining orders for assets valued at $670,000, including cash held in bank accounts, cash held in a lawyer's trust account for the purchases of a property, cryptocurrency, and high-value goods such as a Louis Vuitton bag and Nike shoes.
Detective Inspector Christiaan Barnard said police would continue to work with law enforcement in the United States to recover assets alleged to have been stolen by the organised criminal group.
Cryptocurrency valued at NZ$450m was stolen from seven victims between March and August 2024, with proceeds laundered through multiple cryptocurrency platforms.
The offenders allegedly spent millions of dollars on exotic cars, hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury handbags, watches and clothing, nightclub services, private security guards, and rental homes in Los Angeles, the Hamptons and Miami.
Search warrants executed in Auckland, Wellington, and California led to the arrest of several people, with the New Zealand Police's Financial Crime Group arresting a Wellington-based man in Auckland on Friday morning.
He was indicted by the US Department of Justice under US Federal law, charged with racketeering, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
He was bailed after appearing in the Auckland District Court on Friday, where he was also granted interim name suppression.
He was expected to reappear in the Auckland District Court on July 3.

It seems something terrible might have happened to him. We wait for answers." Louise said Olie had touched many with his music, philosophy, curiosity and passion. "His light was like no other. We are heartbroken and thrown into tumultuous grief and shock. I don't know what else to say." Police said their inquires into the circumstance surrounding Hayes's death were ongoing. "Police are appealing for anyone who knew Mr Hayes and who had recent contact with him, to please contact us immediately. "Police would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Hayes in the days prior to Saturday evening, in particular residents of the apartment complex who may have seen him moving about." Person dies after Upper Hutt blaze
Police have confirmed an elderly person has died after a house fire in Upper Hutt, Wellington. A neighbour of house said the flames were huge and she feared the blaze would spread to her own home. Emergency services were called to a home on Tararua Street in Trentham, Upper Hutt just before 2.30am on Tuesday and found the home fully ablaze. Amala Joseph lives directly next door. Joseph told RNZ an elderly man lived in the property who she did not often see out. The house that caught fire overnight. There were a lot of firefighters there and the fire was really large, Joseph said. She said she was nervous about her own home. "It's pretty close and we don't know what's going to happen next." Photo: Supplied An RNZ reporter at the scene said it looked as if the windows had been blown out and pieces of burnt metal could be seen hanging off the side of the building. Neighbour Leon Zou told RNZ his family woke up in the middle of the night due to the fire. "The fire was pretty much higher than the house." Zou said he was shocked by the blaze. Another nearby neighbour Glynis said she was surprised to see the house this morning. "It is a very quiet street." About 20 firefighters and five trucks were tackling the blaze at its peak. A police spokesperson says it is not yet known what started the fire. A scene guard has been in place overnight. Fire and police investigators are carrying out a scene examination this morning.
