Uttarakhand introduces Automated Driving Test Tracks to enhance road safetySynopsis: The newly launched ADTTs, developed under the CSR initiative of Maruti Suzuki, are designed to evaluate driving skills for light motor vehicles (LMV) and two-wheelers, employing technology to remove human intervention from the testing process.
Uttarakhand has taken a step towards safer roads with the inauguration of Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) in Haridwar and Rishikesh by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, an initiative by Maruti Suzuki under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. It utilizes high-definition cameras and IT systems for transparent and efficient driver evaluations, aiming to ensure only skilled drivers obtain licenses and contribute to road safety in the state.
The newly launched ADTTs are designed to evaluate driving skills for light motor vehicles (LMV) and two-wheelers, employing technology to remove human intervention from the testing process. These tracks complement an existing ADTT in Dehradun, which has been in operation since 2019.
The ADTTs use high-definition cameras and integrated IT systems to assess driving skills. This automated system ensures a comprehensive, efficient, and transparent evaluation process for individuals seeking driving licenses. The evaluations are conducted in accordance with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR).
The Dehradun ADTT was previously recognised by the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand for Excellence and Good Governance in 2019-2020.
Brijesh Kumar Sant (IAS), Secretary Transport, Uttarakhand Government, said 'Our association with Maruti Suzuki goes back to 2009, when the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research was established in Dehradun. With the comprehensive evaluation at ADTTs, we can ensure that only skilled drivers get a driving license. Another state-run road safety initiative where we work with Maruti Suzuki is refresher training for commercial drivers before Char Dham yatra (holy pilgrimage). I also compliment the Company for steering this training program, which helps prepare drivers for the yatra route.'
Other CSR initiatives
Maruti Suzuki also conducts refresher training for commercial drivers in Uttarakhand before the annual Char Dham Yatra, which prepares drivers for the challenging hilly terrains along the pilgrimage route.
Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India, mentioned 'We thank the Uttarakhand Government for their continued association with Maruti Suzuki. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand is rapidly progressing. One of the key growth drivers for the state is tourism. Efficient and skilled drivers are needed to boost tourism and contribute to safer roads. Our Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) can play a vital role to achieve this goal by ensuring that only skilled and competent drivers receive a license through a 100 per cent computerised, transparent, and efficient testing process.'
The refresher training programme is a prerequisite for the mandatory Green Card, which is required for all commercial drivers during the Char Dham Yatra. This year, the training programme aims to cover approximately 11,000 drivers at the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTRs).

Trump trade tariffs: MCA planning to ease compliance burden for MSMEs

As part of a broader strategy to shield domestic industry from US tariffs, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is planning to ease compliance reforms for medium, small and micro enterprises (MSMEs), according to official sources. 'We are looking at it very seriously and taking inputs from the MSME ministry as well,' a government source said. The MCA may also consider amendments to the existing Companies Act for simpler certification processes for MSMEs and doing away with certain compliances for such companies, sources said. Some of the measures which were recommended in the expert committee report regarding Company Law in 2022 included reducing fines and penalties which are designed keeping larger companies in mind. Suggestions made by the Federation of Indian MSMEs (FISME) include exemption for unlisted companies up to a turnover of ₹1,000 crore from mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) obligation to provide them with greater flexibility in their board structure and reduce their compliance costs. The MSME body has sought relaxation in the requirement to appoint independent and women directors, which it says can be costly and time-consuming for unlisted companies, especially those with limited resources. With a global environment marked by trade tensions and geopolitical volatility, the government is expected to look for ways to support domestic industries. 'Direct assistance to MSMEs and assistance through processes - both are important since macro-economy may not be impacted much by tariffs, but MSMEs will face some challenges and require support from the government,' said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Bank of Baroda. Sabnavis said that help with administrative hassles may not give direct support to MSMEs, but would still bring ease of doing business for the sector. Experts said that the government should allow self-certification or deemed acceptance for various procedures under Companies Act, instead of demanding a host of documents from MSMEs. 'They could do risk profiling and have automated acceptance for smaller companies. Departments across governments often ask for the same data and if there was better sharing of information between ministries, it would also ease compliance burden on MSMEs,' an industry expert, who did not wish to be named said. According to the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, MSME contribution to the country's GDP was marginally lower in 2023-24 to 31.1 per cent, compared to 31.3 per cent in the previous year. Under the present Companies Act, MSMEs are granted certain exemptions. For instance, the requirement that the cash flow statement should be part of the financial statement has been made optional. Small companies are not required to rotate auditors and disclosures, such as auditor's report on internal financial controls do not apply to MSMEs. Small companies are also exempt from requirements of pre-certification of forms by professionals. All companies with authorised capital up to ₹15 lakh or with up to 20 members where no share capital is applicable are charged zero fees for incorporation.

Maruti Suzuki sets sights on 4 million units annual production capacity by FY31

India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is planning to ramp up its annual production capacity to four million units by FY 2030-31, the company said in its annual report. The expansion — one of the most ambitious in India's auto sector — is built on the commissioning of 250,000 units at its upcoming Kharkhoda facility in Haryana and a 100,000-unit addition at the Manesar plant. The company added that together with its current output from Suzuki Motor Gujarat and other facilities, Maruti's total installed capacity is at 2.6 million units at present. The new plants will feature flexible manufacturing lines that can roll out vehicles across body styles and powertrains — petrol, CNG, hybrid, and electric. The move is central to Maruti's strategy of future-proofing its portfolio as the market transitions towards alternative fuels. The firm is also looking beyond Indian shores. Exports, already on an upward trajectory, are expected to gain further momentum as Maruti eyes new geographies, including Europe. Analysts said that the timing is spot on. As rivals sharpen their EV and SUV playbooks, Maruti's capacity buildout, combined with a wave of new product launches, could help the company defend — and even grow — its dominant market share.
