"We all have to shut the hell up" - Shaquille O'Neal believes LeBron passing Kareem makes his G.O.A.T. case untouchable originally appeared on Basketball Network.
When LeBron James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's all-time scoring record in 2023, the moment came with more than simple celebration. It marked a shift in how his legacy would be judged. For years, the conversation around who was the greatest had stayed in motion.
But to some, that moment brought it to a stop. For Shaquille O'Neal, it was supposedly the final piece.
"I don't like having this conversation, because I actually know all these guys, but I know LeBron, and I think this is LeBron's plan," O'Neal said. "I think he wants to surpass Kareem cause if he surpasses Kareem in points, we all have to shut the hell up. Think about it, he is going to have four rings, he already passed up Kobe, he already passed up Mike, and now if he passes Kareem, so if that doesn't make him the greatest basketball player, I don't know what we are talking about."
It wasn't just the number. It was what it stood for. Abdul Jabbar's record had lasted nearly four decades. He held it through generations of players, across styles, rule changes and eras. James reaching that point meant he had endured long enough, stayed productive long enough and performed at a level no one had before.
The weight of the crown
Even before the record fell, the debate had always followed the four-time MVP. Every win was a chapter. Every loss was a counterpoint. But on that night in Los Angeles, with the cameras flashing and the game paused for history, there was no noise. There was only the scoreboard and the moment.
James asked for the title. He never shied away from it either.
"I'm gonna take myself against anybody that's ever played this game," he said after becoming the NBA's all-time leading scorer. "I always feel like I'm the best to ever play this game."
The words weren't loud. They didn't have to be. The numbers told their own story. Four MVPs and four championships. A scoring total no one had ever reached. That kind of consistency had never been matched.
The beauty of basketball is that there is no single measure. Some will still look at Michael Jordan's perfect Finals record. Some will see Kobe Bryant's edge and leadership. Others will point to Bill Russell's rings. But James' career now spans longer than most. And with the Kareem milestone in hand, the list of arguments against him has grown shorter.
History doesn't need an answer
For O'Neal, the scoring record brought clarity. It was not about liking James more or less than anyone else. It was about what had been done. Abdul Jabbar's name sat alone for so long that no one imagined it would be passed. Once it was, the conversation, in his view, no longer needed to be had.
There will always be favorites. There will always be memories that feel bigger. But at some point, the numbers take over. The longevity, production, championships and now the record itself have become part of a case that no longer has room for dismissal.
James has always been vocal about how he wants to be remembered in NBA history. And for a player who has always let his game speak first, the moment gave his words more weight than ever before. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Eagles guard Kenyon Green likely out for rest of preseason with shoulder injury

The injuries to the Eagles' guards are adding up. Philadelphia guard Kenyon Green has a shoulder injury that is likely to end his preseason, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Green is viewed as week to week. The Eagles are also currently without guard Landon Dickerson, who had surgery to repair a torn meniscus and also is out for the preseason and week to week. A first-round draft pick of the Texans in 2022, Green has not lived up to his pre-draft expectations but was hoping to get a fresh start with the Eagles, who acquired him in the trade that sent C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Houston. Now the Eagles will hope Green can get healthy and return to the field for the regular season.

Panthers release new footage of Cam Newton-Josh Norman fight from 2015 training camp

For 10 years, a photo capturing Cam Newton's sadistic smile stood as the best visual representation of his infamous training camp fight with teammate Josh Norman. But that might've just changed. On Monday, the Carolina Panthers released the first episode of 2015 Stories, a new four-part docuseries about the organization's magical 2015 run. The 10-minute episode takes a look back on that summer's training camp, and includes some fresh footage of the legendary skirmish between Newton and Norman . . . Little did many folks know, that scuffle would only be the beginning of a wild and wildly successful season for all who were involved. Newton went on to become the first and only Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in franchise history. Norman also had a career year, earning his first and only first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections. The Panthers, as a whole, experienced the best campaign of their existence. They went 15-1 in the regular season, captured a then-NFC South record three straight division titles and reached their second-ever Super article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers release new footage of Cam Newton-Josh Norman fight from 2015

Assistant Boston Celtics coach Matt Reynolds on what he sees in Max Shulga

While his play in the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League might not have been the flashiest, Boston Celtics two way player Max Shulga has a quiet confidence in his game that could be laying the foundations for success at the NBA level. Sin City Celtics head coach (and Boston assistant coach) Matt Reynolds broke down how what he saw informs what he expects from the Kyiv, Ukraine native with the Celtics in his rookie season and beyond with Boston in a recent interview with Forbes reporter Bobby Krivitsky. "I think he's going to have a mixed bag of offensive responsibility as a primary or secondary playmaker. I think he had a pretty good, consistent floor game creating for others," said Reynolds. "I think most of the shots he took, I love, and I expect him to make at a higher frequency going forward." "But I think in a general sense, it was a really good start for him, and we're pretty excited to have him," added the Celtics assistant. In the five games Shulga suited up with the Summer Celtics, he put up 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.8 steals (and just 0.6 turnovers) per game in an average of 21.0 minutes of floor time a game. And while his shooting (24.1% from the field overall, 21.4% from deep, and a respectable 72.7% from the free throw line) leaves plenty to be desired, it is also the least important aspect of summer league play. The passing pops for a non-starting prospect, especially with the low turnover rate and solid defense. If Shulga can scale up his play to an NBA context, there will be a place in this league for what he can offer Boston. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:
