Zhao Xintong v Mark Williams: World Snooker Championship final

The Guardian04-05-2025

We say this every year, but it bears annual repetition. In life, there are few things – or people – or divinities – on which we can rely never, ever to disappoint us. But the World Snooker Championships are one such, and the last fortnight has bestowed upon us another jazzer.
That's not to say it's the same vibe every year, far from it. Once upon a time, this tournament confirmed the identity of the best player in the world – Steve Davis through the 80s, Stephen Hendry the 90s – but now, though Judd Trump has dominated the last few years, he's won this trophy only once because he standard is so high anyone in the field can beat anyone else in the field.
As such, we've had six different world champions in the last seven years, three of them first-time winners. It's unlikely many, if any of us, expected to spend the bank holiday weekend obsessed with Zhao Xintong v Mark J Williams.
Which is to say that nowadays, our tournament does still confirms the identity of the best player in the world, but only during these last two weeks. In theory, this is a lesser outcome – our players come and go, so don't represent our family heritage in the way our teams do – but in practice, even individual sport isn't solely about facts, rather about people and their stories, which exist in thrillingly inexhaustible supply.
In any case, it doesn't really make sense to say Mark J Williams comes and goes, given he first contested a final in 1999, then picked up the pot in 2000. Except it also kind of does, given he was set to quit the game in 2018, disgusted by the waning of his considerable powers. But his wife, Jo, persuaded him to continue, he miraculously, affirmingly, snaffled the title for the third time, and since then has re-established himself as part of the elite, a one-off technician with a unique snooker brain, and one of the greatest big-match temperaments we've ever seen – in any sport. Already an indisputable great of the game, a fourth biggun would take him level with John Higgins and Mark Selby in the all-time list; what an honour that'd be.
Standing in his way, though, is a redemption tale of mythological proportions. Zhao Xintong exploded into our consciousness in 2021-22, winning the UK Championships followed by the German Masters six weeks later. His long-to-mid-range potting was barely believable in the ferocity of its accuracy, so too his coruscating calm … and then, in 2023, he was suspended pending a match-fixing investigation, eventually receiving a 20-month ban for being party to another player fixing two matches and betting on matches himself. No, it wasn't pretty; yes, he was young.
Since returning to the game, Zhao has devastated almost everything in his path – most recently Ronnie O'Sullivan – and arrives at this final in sensational form. But Mark J has made a career out of extinguishing exactly that, so turn on the telly, draw the curtains, and for the next two days, shut out everything that isn't this. You'll not regret it.

Wuhan Open and British Open draws made as Ronnie O'Sullivan enters both

There is precious little time off on the snooker calendar these days, with the new season getting underway in less than two weeks. Qualifiers for the Wuhan Open are followed by British Open qualifying, with those matches taking place in Leicester this month before the main events later in the year. While it is a low-key start to the season, they are vital matches for a lot of players on tour as early defeats in the opening two ranking events of the season would represent a bit of a nightmare start to the season. Not all the big names are in action in qualifying, with eight matches held over for the main stages of the Wuhan Open and 16 matches held over to Cheltenham for the British Open. Ronnie O'Sullivan will not be playing in qualifying, but he is in the draw for both events, taking on Allan Taylor in Wuhan and Sanderson Lam in Cheltenham. New world champion Zhao Xintong also has his matches held over, playing Iulian Boiko in Wuhan and a yet-to-be confirmed top-up player in Cheltenham. The British Open has an open, FA Cup-style draw, so there are some heavyweight matches from the first round, including Mark Williams taking on Si Jiahui and Kyren Wilson facing Chris Wakelin. Details on how to watch the Wuhan Open and British Open qualifiers are expected to be announced next week. Following the two sets of qualifiers the Championship League begins on Monday June 30 and runs all the way until a champion is crowned on July 23. The main stages of the Wuhan Open run from August 24-30 and the following first round games are held over to the tournament venue. Ronnie O'Sullivan launches new career move ahead of quitting UK for 'new life'

Ronnie O'Sullivan has not played since his World Championship semi-final defeat to Zhao Xintong in May and has now confirmed his next career move by launching his own YouTube channel Ronnie O'Sullivan has revealed his latest venture - he's now a YouTuber. The seven-time World Snooker Championship winner barely featured competitively during the latter half of last season, having shattered his cue in frustration during the Championship League in January. He withdrew from the Masters, where he was set to defend his crown, as well as several other events, before eventually returning to competition at the World Championship - with a fresh cue. Although he reached the semi-finals, 'The Rocket' cut a frustrated figure, voicing concerns over both his performance and his equipment. ‌ In a drastic move, he had the tip and ferrule of his cue replaced mid-match during his last four clash with Zhao Xintong. Following a heavy 17-7 loss to the Chinese star, the snooker icon shared his intention to spend more time in the Middle East and become more selective with his participation in tournaments. ‌ He's now branched into a new endeavour he can pursue from anywhere - starting his own YouTube channel. Sharing a link to a video of his historic 1000th professional century, achieved during the 2019 Players Championship final, O'Sullivan took to X to announce his new venture. "Finally gone and got a YouTube channel," he wrote. "I will be uploading all sorts here from some of my favourite shots and matches to me cooking to me meeting and chatting to some interesting people. Hope you guys enjoy it!!" However, there is currently just one video on the channel - a clip of him achieving a 147 during a practice session in Saudi Arabia prior to the World Championship. The video showcasing the 1000th century appeared to have been taken down. Another said: "Good luck Ron, keep grafting & playing for as long as you can." A third joked: "Ronnie O'Sullivan cooking must be Fast Food!" After his elimination at the Crucible, O'Sullivan outlined his short-term plans, which include leaving the UK. "I think I'm going to be moving out of the UK this year. A new life somewhere else," the 49-year-old announced. "I'll still try and play snooker but I don't know what the future looks like for me really. I'm moving away soon so I'll just see how it goes. There's a lot of more important things in life to worry about than a game of snooker. "For me, it's a big part of my life, but I've got to try and figure out what my future looks like, whether it's playing or not. I'll be moving away to the Middle East but we'll see how it goes. I might be back in six months, who knows!"

Ronnie O'Sullivan ‘finally' signs up for lucrative side hustle as snooker legend tells fans ‘stay tuned'

SNOOKER icon Ronnie O'Sullivan has confirmed a major decision... by creating a YouTube channel. O'Sullivan, 49, has been treating snooker fans to his greatness with a cue for years. 2 But now the Rocket will be able to spread that joy even more after announcing his latest venture as a YouTuber under the username: @RonnieOSullivan508. The seven-time world champion published his first video on the platform on Wednesday afternoon. Announcing the move on social media, he said: "Finally gone and got a YouTube page… "I will be uploading all sorts here from some of my favourite shots and matches to me cooking to me meeting and chatting to some interesting people. "Hope you guys enjoy it!!" In the 25-second shorts video, backed by the song Dreams by Izabel & Waverly, O'Sullivan did not say a word. Instead, it showed him in hitting a 147 in practice while in Saudi Arabia before the World Championship. The channel had previously shown a clip of him making his 1000th professional century at the 2019 Players Championship final. However, that clip was seemingly swiftly removed. Regardless, the solo video on the channel proved popular with fans as it was watched 4.7k times. Zhao Xintong's classy act towards Ronnie O'Sullivan revealed after knocking legend out of World Snooker Championship The video was also liked more than 500 times on its first day, and has already served to connect his fan base around the globe. Fans were also very supportive of the move, with one saying: "Love you so much Ronnie. I am one of your biggest fans. Welcome to YouTube Legendary Snooker Lord. Greetings and sending lots of love to you from Turkey." A second said: "Watched you in Manchester two years ago and was amazing, you will do so well on YouTube and hopefully keeps you going!!!" A third said: "About time you set a page. Keep it up." Another said: "Congrats Ronnie. Greetings from Moldova." A fifth said: "Hello Ronnie! Loved watching you since I was a kid. There, he suffered a crushing 17-7 defeat to eventual first-time champion Zhao Xintong. The Rocket has already invested in programs for the next generation, including a snooker academy in his name in Saudi Arabia. Speaking about his future, the snooker icon said: "I think I'm going to be moving out of the UK this year. A new life somewhere else. "I'll still try and play snooker but I don't know what the future looks like for me really. "I'm moving away soon so I'll just see how it goes. There's a lot of more important things in life to worry about than a game of snooker. "For me, it's a big part of my life, but I've got to try and figure out what my future looks like, whether it's playing or not. Inside Ronnie's colourful career FROM his lightning breaks to blasts at officials, Ronnie O'Sullivan has fired snooker into the spotlight. The seven-time world champion makes almost as big an impact away from the table as on it. O'Sullivan has three children - two daughters and a son. And the Rocket's on-off relationship with British actress Laila Rouass has also hit the headlines. He has opened up on battles with his weight and addiction. While the controversial cueist reckons he wasted NINE YEARS of his career by partying too hard. Despite being worth £14million, O'Sullivan is renowned for his love of canal boats and snubbing flashy cars. His rivalry with fellow star Judd Trump has been branded 'snooker's greatest feud'. And Ali Carter had his nose knocked out of joint by the Rocket in their infamous 'Snotgate' row.
