NPWS events to celebrate Irish Natura 2000 sites

Agriland21-05-2025

Some of the country's most valuable sites for nature are being celebrated today (Wednesday, May 21) to mark Natura 2000 day.
The Natura 2000 Network includes over 27,000 protected sites across the European Union, covering nearly 20% of Europe's land and almost 10% of its marine waters. It is the world's largest network of protected sites.
Ireland is home to more than 600 Natura 2000 sites, which protect a wide range of valuable habitats and species under the EU Habitats Directive Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and the Birds Directive Special Protection Areas (SPAs)
Natura 2000
To mark Natura 2000 day, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is supporting Bioblitzes and other events in Natura sites around the country.
Bioblitzes bring together scientists and citizen scientists to record as many species as possible in a short time at a Natura 2000 site.
During the week NPWS staff are hosting bioblitzes at sites including St Gobnet's Wood SAC in Co. Cork, Connemara National Park, Coole Park in Co. Galway, and Killarney National Park in Co. Kerry.
Speaking on Natura 2000 Day, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O'Sullivan encouraged members of the public to discover their local Natura 2000 site.
'The Natura 2000 network includes some of the finest examples of habitats and species we have in this country and in Europe.
'It is a network of protected sites which highlights the biodiverse and unique natural heritage in Ireland and in Europe.
'Conservation is a shared responsibility and today is an opportunity for everyone to learn about a site near you and how it is being managed and protected for future generations,' he said.
Restoration
The minister said that Natura 2000 Day is also an opportunity to recognise the restoration work that landowners and the NPWS are undertaking together on these sites.
These include projects focused on actively restoring raised and blanket bog habitat designated as SACs under the Habitats Directive.
Recent surveys are showing significant positive trends in respect of raised bog sites, which are beginning to move towards more favourable conservation condition.
Old Oak woodland is being restored in Glen of the Downs SAC, Co. Wicklow by removing the invasive alien species Cherry Laurel, and Lapwing are being protected in Co. Mayo in the Termoncarragh lake and Annagh Machair SPA.
Niall Ó Donnchú, director general with the NPWS, said the Natura 2000 network is 'a central part of our natural heritage in Ireland'.
'Many of the sites in the network in Ireland are in public ownership and are accessible, for example, our national parks, while other sites are in private ownership.
'The landowners and stakeholders in all the sites in Ireland are working together to protect and restore these vitally important habitats and species.
'Natura 2000 Day is a reminder of the diverse and unique natural heritage we have and can be proud of in Ireland,' he said.

12 Illegal Workers Detained And 125 Violators Deported

Twelve violating and irregular workers were detained, and 125 violators were deported following 1,077 inspection campaigns and visits carried out by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) between 25 and 31 May 2025. The inspection campaigns and visits also resulted in monitoring a number of violations related to the provisions of a number of regulating laws, especially the Labour Market Regulatory Authority and the Residency Laws in the Kingdom of Bahrain, noting that legal measures were taken regarding the observed violations. The authority pointed out that 1,062 inspection visits were carried out on various shops in all governorates, in addition to 15 joint inspection campaigns, that included 5 campaigns in the Capital Governorate, 3 campaigns in Muharraq Governorate, 6 campaigns in the Northern Governorate, and 1 campaign in the Southern Governorate. The government entities that participated in the campaigns are the Ministry of Interior, represented by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA), the Governorate's respective Police Directorate, the General Directorate of Media and Security Culture, the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, and the Social Insurance Organisation. Joint coordination The Authority affirmed the continuation of joint coordination with government agencies to intensify inspection campaigns in all governorates of the Kingdom, and to address any violations or practices that negatively affect the stability and competitiveness of the labour market or harm economic and social security of the Kingdom. The renewed its call on all members of the society to support the efforts of government agencies in addressing illegal labour practices, by reporting violations via the electronic form on the authority's website or by calling the authority's call centre on 17506055 or via the government's Suggestions and Complaints System (Tawasul). Prosecutors Seek Death Sentence For Man for Murdering

Prosecutors have called for the death sentence for a man accused of murdering his neighbour in Shakhura, insisting a psychiatric report shows he was fully aware of his actions. Addressing the High Criminal Court yesterday, the Public Prosecution said the defendant, in his forties, had planned the killing and carried it out with intent. A medical panel confirmed he bore full responsibility at the time of the attack. Sound mind Claims that he was not of sound mind were brushed aside. The prosecution cited a statement from the defendant's brother, who said his mental condition had improved, and stressed that the forensic report ruled out any disorder affecting his judgement. The defence maintained its position. Records The lawyer presented records showing his client had been admitted to hospital some 25 years ago and urged the court to include the full medical file in the case. He also asked that the defendant be reassessed by a medical committee to determine whether he could be held to account for his actions. Asked directly by the judges, the defendant said he had a medical history but could not remember what happened on the day in question. The court ordered a new review by the relevant medical panel and set 16 June for the examination. State of mind A full report is to be submitted, focusing on the defendant's state of mind during the incident. His medical file will be attached to the case papers. In the same hearing, lawyer Abdulrahman Ghonaim filed a request for compensation. He said the crime had left the victim's children fatherless, the youngest being only two, and argued that the impact of the act warranted redress. Body The case began when police in the Northern Governorate found a body near a house in Shakhura. The victim had been stabbed several times. Prosecutors and forensic experts were dispatched to the scene, where the body was inspected and evidence gathered. Samples were collected for testing and witness statements taken. Security camera footage helped identify the suspect, who turned out to be a neighbour and a relative of the victim. Arrest He was arrested on the orders of the Prosecution. During questioning, he admitted to the killing. He said he had lain in wait for the victim due to an old dispute and attacked him with a knife as he stepped out of his home. Bahrain Becomes First Emirates Route Served

Bahrain has become the first destination in the Emirates network to be exclusively served by the state-of-the-art Airbus A350, following the arrival of the airline's third A350 at Bahrain International Airport on 2 June. The return flight, EK836, departed Bahrain at 0340 hrs and arrived in Dubai at 0605 hrs. The strategic move aligns with Emirates' 'Fly Better' initiative, aimed at enhancing passenger experience and modernising its fleet. The Airbus A350 offers next-generation features, including 32 Business Class lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 21 Premium Economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout, and 259 Economy Class seats in a 3-3-3 layout. Passengers can enjoy faster Wi-Fi, Emirates' award-winning ice entertainment system, quieter cabins, higher ceilings, and advanced cabin lighting – all designed to maximise comfort and reduce travel fatigue. Emirates' decision to deploy the A350 exclusively to Bahrain underscores its commitment to the Kingdom and highlights the strengthening ties between the two countries. The A350 currently operates on several short and medium-haul routes, including Amman, Kuwait, Edinburgh, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Colombo, and Tunis. Emirates plans to expand the A350 service to 17 cities by the end of 2025. Also read: Court Sentences Two Expats To Six Months In Jail And Deportation Over Indecent Video
