Teen seriously injured after being hit by car while riding bike in Lynn
"It was a frightening sound, and I was pretty much ready for the worst when I came out," said John Robert Gardner.
That frightening sound woke Gardner from his sleep Wednesday afternoon. The off-duty paramedic was resting before his overnight shift, and then suddenly rendering aid right outside his front door.
"I heard an incredibly loud bang and immediately afterwards heard somebody moaning and yelling," he recalled.
"Boom! I see the bicycle and said oh my! Screaming! The kid was screaming 'I love you mom!'" said another witness.
A sixteen-year-old riding his bike was hit just before 4:30 Wednesday afternoon near Cottage and Woodman streets. Witnesses say he was conscious and talking but had suffered serious injuries to his head.
"It was an obvious trauma. He had hit the windshield. It was a significant impact. The bike was thrown a ways. I would estimate his body was thrown about 10 feet," Gardner said.
Just a block from Barry Park, parents and neighbors seemed solemn at the sight of that abandoned bicycle in the road.
"I feel so bad because I have the kids. When I see the little kid, I said oh my son. He's not my kid but I feel right now, you know?" a mother said.
"There needs to be more at this crossing; Blinking lights, something. We're constantly hollering at cars going way too fast down here. It was only a matter of time. Based on what I saw it looks like we got pretty well lucky this time," Gardner said.
Investigators are still piecing together the moments leading up to this crash but say the driver did remain on scene.

Central Texas man charged in fiery crash that killed 5 Dallas-area women on birthday trip, DPS says
A Central Texas man is facing five counts of manslaughter after a fiery crash near Austin last month killed five Dallas-area women on a birthday trip, authorities said Wednesday. Kody Lane Talley, 37, of Leander, is being held on a $1 million bond in the Burnet County Jail, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The crash happened about 6 p.m. on July 25 on U.S. 281 near Park Road 4 in Burnet County. Talley was driving a 2018 Ram 4500 pickup truck pulling a livestock trailer northbound when he veered into the southbound lanes. DPS said his truck struck a Chevrolet Malibu head-on, then collided with a Mercedes SUV, which overturned and caught fire. All five occupants of the SUV — Thalia Salinas, Ruby Cruz, Brianna Valadez, Desiree Cervantez, and Jacqueline Velazco Ventura — were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims, all in their early 20s, were on a weekend trip to the Central Texas community of Kingsland to celebrate Salinas' 23rd birthday. Salinas' family told CBS News Texas the five were like sisters and had been friends since middle school. "Words can't describe how devastated we are," the family said in a statement. "We were en route to celebrate Thalia's birthday in Kingsland, Texas, at her favorite place — on the lake — with all her favorite people. Then we got news of the girls' passing away in the worst accident we could ever imagine. We will never recover from losing Thalia, Brianna, Ruby, Jacki,e and Desi." GoFundMe accounts have been established for each of the five families to help cover funeral and memorial expenses. The investigation into the crash is continuing, DPS said.
