NHL Analyst Warns of Maple Leafs' 'Massive Failure' This Offseason
The Toronto Maple Leafs have endured vast changes this offseason, led by the exit of Mitch Marner.

According to NHL analyst Matt Larkin, not only have the Leafs changed their DNA, but they have done so for the worse. So much so that Larkin warned that the franchise's offseason could be 'a massive failure' in a blunt assessment at Daily Faceoff on Thursday.
'Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy were savvy additions,' Larkin wrote, 'but don't come close to replacing Marner's production.
'Now the Leafs' top-end scoring will largely depend on Auston Matthews fighting off (a) chronic injury, while they'll hope John Tavares can repeat a 38-goal season at 35 years old.'
Larkin argued that the Maple Leafs' front office, led by general manager Brad Treliving, has failed to address the franchise's biggest issue following Marner's departure: elite scoring from the wing.

Without Marner, Toronto will face an uphill battle in an increasingly competitive Atlantic Division. In Larkin's eyes, the additions of Maccelli via free agency and Roy in Marner's sign-and-trade with Vegas aren't enough.
"If I'm placing a bet, I still have the Leafs making the playoffs next season – calm down – but they may slide back in a highly competitive Atlantic Division," Larkin wrote.

Larkin didn't hold back on Toronto's overall roster outlook either. He questioned the club's defensive identity and added that its midtier metrics last season were masked by strong goaltending from Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll.

'If they don't add another top-six forward by any means necessary between now and October,' Larkin wrote, 'GM Brad Treliving's offseason is a massive failure.'
The Leafs still have $5.3 million in salary cap space. Treliving has made clear the franchise is still trying to add a top-six forward this offseason.

Canucks Tyler Myers Discusses Quinn Hughes, Kiefer Sherwood & More In Latest Podcast Interview
Few players have been with the Vancouver Canucks longer than defenceman Tyler Myers. The 35-year-old signed with Vancouver in 2019 and is getting set for his seventh season with the organization. A leader on and off the ice, Myers is projected to play a key role once again during the 2025-26 season. Recently, Myers joined the Cam and Strick Podcast to discuss a variety of topics. During the conversation, the Canucks defender discussed Quinn Hughes' future, as well as who the best trash talker on the team is. To start, Myers was asked about next year and focusing on making the playoffs rather than dealing with the noise surrounding the team. Advertisement "It is nice to focus on that, said Myers. "I think, when you're talking about Vancouver, you're always going to hear about something. It's just the way the market is. When things aren't going well, it's tough, but when things are going well, it's it's an amazing place to play. My family and I, we're close to home. We love Vancouver. It's an unbelievable hockey city. there's going to be highs and lows. Coming into this year, excited to start. We're able to keep guys, you know, this last week, to keep a lot of the room intact with important guys. It's good, and now we can just focus on building for that." Vancouver Canucks 2024–25 Report Card: Tyler Myers Vancouver Canucks 2024–25 Report Card: Tyler Myers In the fourth installment of The Hockey News - Vancouver Canucks site's 2024–25 report card series, we'll be taking a look at defenceman Tyler Myers. Myers had the most games played of all Canucks defenders this season with 71, and also registered six goals and 18 assists in this span of time. Advertisement One of the reasons Vancouver's 2024-25 season was derailed was due to a feud between Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. The story ended up blowing up and was the talk of the NHL until Miller was eventually traded to the New York Rangers. While Myers wouldn't go into specifics, he did acknowledge that the story ended up taking on a life of it's own. "It got pretty crazy. Just publicly last year. You know, way more than what it was. I'm not going to sit here and say there was intention, but I've been on a team where two players are in a full-on fist fight after a game, who I know are close friends. You know, there's going to be tension, but you know. Milsey and I got close, and it was a lot more than it needed to be made out to be. But, it wasn't anything crazy. We were figuring things out, just like every other team does with different situations. But our locker room was great. I like coming into the rink every day. The guys are really close, and we weren't too worried about it." Looking ahead to the future, Myers was asked about his new head coach, Adam Foote. After Rick Tocchet left this off-season to join the Philadelphia Flyers, Foote was promoted to head coach after spending the last two and a half seasons as an assistant. Based on his answer, it is clear that Myers is excited about Foote becoming his next head coach. Vancouver Canucks' Conor Garland Is 'Really Excited' About New Coach Adam Foote Vancouver Canucks' Conor Garland Is 'Really Excited' About New Coach Adam Foote It's no secret that the Vancouver Canucks' 2024-25 season was tumultuous and disappointing. Entering a new chapter after Rick Tocchet's departure, stability and calm should be the team's watchwords. Advertisement "Footer (Adam Foote) is awesome. I love having him as a D coach. I really leaned on him. Even at 35, I still feel like I'm learning. He's a guy I go to all the time. Try and see different ways how I can help. Really happy he's not going anywhere for him. To get the head job, really happy for him, and I'm excited to continue our relationship, because I know how much he's helped me." Myers was then asked about Thatcher Demko, who struggled with injuries last year. The 2024 Vezina Trophy runner-up recently signed a three-year extension with the Canucks, keeping him in Vancouver until the end of the 2028-29 season. As Myers explained, he is happy that Demko is not only healthy but also staying with the Canucks for the foreseeable future. Whenever anyone asks about him, we always say, it's hard to explain how good this guy actually is. I know he's feeling good coming into this year, so I'm excited for him to have that feeling. I know there were times last year where it got tough for him, and we've all been through it, but just the experiences I had with injuries. I tried to tell him, you're going to get through it. And you know the way he's feeling now, I know he's excited, and I'm excited for him, because he's that good. He's great in the room, really happy for him." Speaking of great players, Myers was also asked about Quinn Hughes, who finished third in Norris Trophy voting this past season. The two have been teammates since Hughes' rookie season, when he finished as the runner up for the Calder Trophy. In his answer, Myers not only discussed Hughes' development since joining the league, but also gave Vancouver's captain a significant compliment. Advertisement "It was five years ago when I was like, wow, this guy is amazing. And it seems like every year since then, he's only gotten better. Just when I think he's at his ceiling, in his prime, he just keeps getting better. It's crazy. But the thing with Huggy, I think the thing that separates him is his edge work, and the way he separates himself from guys gives him so much time and space. Then his skill just takes over. He is maybe the best player I've seen in my career. You know, him and Makar are on another level. It's fun to watch. He's amazing." Over the last few months, there has been considerable speculation regarding Hughes and whether he will leave once his contract expires in two years. The story then exploded when President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford mentioned that trading the 2024 Norris Trophy winner might be a possibility in the future. According to Myers, he has also heard the rumours but believes the story has become a bit overblown. "He doesn't like all that speculation and stuff. He loves his brothers, loves his family, like everybody else, but he's not going around the room saying he wants to play with his brothers. I know it's a big, big story around the hockey world, but everyone makes it a lot more than it is." Lastly, Myers was asked who the best trash talker on the team is. His answer was Kiefer Sherwood, who set the NHL record for hits in a season. As Myers explains, Sherwood was a massive addition to the lineup last season thanks to his never-end motor and willingness to put his body on the line every night. BREAKING (Records): Canucks Kiefer Sherwood Smashes NHL Season Hit Record Versus New York BREAKING (Records): Canucks Kiefer Sherwood Smashes NHL Season Hit Record Versus New York The NHL has a new season hit record holder. Advertisement Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, who has made his presence known in Vancouver since signing with the team last offseason, has surpassed Jeremy Lauzon's record for most hits in a season by making his 384th hit of the season today against the New York Rangers. He now has sole position of first in the NHL for hits made in one season, and is trailed by Lauzon and Matt Martin (who has three of the highest-hitting seasons). "You know what, he just finishes everything. If he's around another guy, he's finishing him. It doesn't matter where he is. He's a warrior. He competes with the best of them. He broke the hit record this year, right? But, yeah, I mean, anytime he was around somebody, he was leaning into it, whether it was big or small. It was really good for us. He brought an element that I think our team needed. He did great for us." If the Canucks are going to be successful in 2025-26, they need Myers to have another strong season. He averaged just under 21 minutes a night in 2024-25 and was a fixture in Vancouver's top four all year. Now entering his 17th NHL season, Myers sounds determined to ensure that the Canucks return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs next year.
