NHL Analyst Warns of Maple Leafs' 'Massive Failure' This Offseason
The Toronto Maple Leafs have endured vast changes this offseason, led by the exit of Mitch Marner.

According to NHL analyst Matt Larkin, not only have the Leafs changed their DNA, but they have done so for the worse. So much so that Larkin warned that the franchise's offseason could be 'a massive failure' in a blunt assessment at Daily Faceoff on Thursday.
'Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy were savvy additions,' Larkin wrote, 'but don't come close to replacing Marner's production.
'Now the Leafs' top-end scoring will largely depend on Auston Matthews fighting off (a) chronic injury, while they'll hope John Tavares can repeat a 38-goal season at 35 years old.'
Larkin argued that the Maple Leafs' front office, led by general manager Brad Treliving, has failed to address the franchise's biggest issue following Marner's departure: elite scoring from the wing.

Without Marner, Toronto will face an uphill battle in an increasingly competitive Atlantic Division. In Larkin's eyes, the additions of Maccelli via free agency and Roy in Marner's sign-and-trade with Vegas aren't enough.
"If I'm placing a bet, I still have the Leafs making the playoffs next season – calm down – but they may slide back in a highly competitive Atlantic Division," Larkin wrote.

Larkin didn't hold back on Toronto's overall roster outlook either. He questioned the club's defensive identity and added that its midtier metrics last season were masked by strong goaltending from Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll.

'If they don't add another top-six forward by any means necessary between now and October,' Larkin wrote, 'GM Brad Treliving's offseason is a massive failure.'
The Leafs still have $5.3 million in salary cap space. Treliving has made clear the franchise is still trying to add a top-six forward this offseason.

After Rick Tocchet left this off-season to join the Philadelphia Flyers, Foote was promoted to head coach after spending the last two and a half seasons as an assistant. Just when I think he's at his ceiling, in his prime, he just keeps getting better. It's crazy. But the thing with Huggy, I think the thing that separates him is his edge work, and the way he separates himself from guys gives him so much time and space. Then his skill just takes over. He is maybe the best player I've seen in my career. You know, him and Makar are on another level. It's fun to watch. He's amazing." Over the last few months, there has been considerable speculation regarding Hughes and whether he will leave once his contract expires in two years. The story then exploded when President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford mentioned that trading the 2024 Norris Trophy winner might be a possibility in the future. According to Myers, he has also heard the rumours but believes the story has become a bit overblown. "He doesn't like all that speculation and stuff. His answer was Kiefer Sherwood, who set the NHL record for hits in a season. As Myers explains, Sherwood was a massive addition to the lineup last season thanks to his never-end motor and willingness to put his body on the line every night. He broke the hit record this year, right? But, yeah, I mean, anytime he was around somebody, he was leaning into it, whether it was big or small. It was really good for us. He brought an element that I think our team needed. He did great for us." If the Canucks are going to be successful in 2025-26, they need Myers to have another strong season. He averaged just under 21 minutes a night in 2024-25 and was a fixture in Vancouver's top four all year. HALIFAX — Lauren Rowe's goal in the 79th minute snapped a scoreless tie and lifted the visiting AFC Toronto to a 1-0 Northern Super League victory over the Halifax Tides on Tuesday at Wanderers Grounds. Eight minutes earlier Toronto's Victoria Pickett drilled a shot off the goalpost as the first-place visitors applied pressure on the last-place hosts.
