Why Beth Mead was allowed to take penalty twice in England's Euro 2025 triumph
For the third match in succession, the Lionesses were forced to come from behind to secure victory after Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring for Spain midway through the first half at Basel's St Jakob-Park.
Having been introduced from the bench in place of the injured Lauren James, Chloe Kelly was once again England's super-sub hero as she delivered a pinpoint cross for Alessio Russo's 57th-minute header to make it all square.
And it was Kelly's spot-kick at the end of a nerve-jangling shootout that saw the holders get their hands on the trophy – three years on from their famous victory over Germany at Wembley.
Sarina Wiegman's side looked have got off to a dream start in the shootout as Beth Mead sent Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll the wrong way from 12 yards, despite slipping in her run-up.
However, replays clearly showed that Mead had touched the ball twice before finding the back of the net, meaning she had to try to regather her composure to retake her penalty – which was subsequently saved.
Mead could have been forgiven for watching the rest of the shootout through her fingers following her miss and the Arsenal forward would have had her mouth as Leah Williamson's tame effort was denied by Coll, with England holding a 2-1 lead.
But Salma Paralluelo dragged her strike wide to ensure the trophy would remain with England, as long as Kelly was successful with her strike.
Just last month, the law was changed on 'double-touch' penalties after Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez highly contentious disallowed spot-kick in the side's Champions League last-16 defeat to Real Madrid. More Trending
Alvarez slipped and made contact with his standing leg before Real Madrid went on to prevail to book their spot in the quarter-finals.
Issuing a clarification to Law 14 in response, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) confirmed that penalties which had been touched twice would now be allowed to be retaken in cases where it was 'clearly unintentional' – but only if the kick was successful.

The Reds were linked with Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi, but talk of a move to Anfield has cooled. Arne Slot may still look to add a centre-half before the summer is out but looks to have missed out on Zeze with NEOM winning that race. The Saudi club are well backed and haven't been shy in underlining their ambition. Former Nottingham Forest sporting director Kyriakos Dourekas is now leading the recruitment at the Middle East outfit and they have Said Benrahma and Alexandre Lacazette on their books. NEOM have just been promoted to the top flight in Saudi Arabia and their remit is on retaining that status whilst also overseeing plans for a new stadium and growing their global identity. Clubs in Saudi have continued to attack the market and Chelsea's Joao Felix, who only moved to the Blues last summer, is closing in on a move to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr. It's a bit early – FA chief Mark Bullingham on Sarina Wiegman new contract talks
Wiegman masterminded her third successive European Championship triumph with Sunday's penalty shoot-out success over Spain to ensure England retained the trophy they won for the first time in 2022. The Dutch coach is contracted to the Football Association until after the 2027 World Cup. FA chief executive Bullingham told BBC Sport: 'She's an incredible person, incredible coach and incredible leader. 'We're very lucky to have her, proud to have her as part of the team and obviously she will be working with us for the World Cup.' Pressed on when contract talks would take place, Bullingham said: 'It's a bit early for that. 'We are delighted she is with us for the World Cup and we will have that conversation at an appropriate time. 'She is an incredible manager and we're delighted to be working with her, so that has to be up to her. We will have those conversations when they're ready to go.' Wiegman, 55, has been England head coach since 2021 and guided the team to two European Championship titles and a runners-up finish at the 2023 World Cup.
