Malaysia, Vietnam call for continued monitoring of Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was agreed upon during a telephone conversation with his Vietnamese counterpart, Pham Minh Chinh, earlier today.
"We welcomed the positive progress in the ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, including the visit by a monitoring team led by Malaysia to the affected areas.
"Both parties also stressed the need for ongoing monitoring efforts to safeguard peace and stability in the Asean region," he said in a statement.
Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following a special meeting on Monday, which brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, with Anwar serving as host and Asean chair.
During the call, Anwar said they also exchanged views on global issues, including the United States' tariffs, and explored future cooperation in areas such as innovation, energy security, and the Asean Power Grid initiative.
He also welcomed Vietnam's readiness to send a ministerial-level delegation to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Anwar added that both sides would remain in close contact ahead of their next meeting in China, scheduled for early September.

MELAKA: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026–2030, tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday, has been described as a key catalyst in strengthening Melaka's position regionally and internationally. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the implementation of 13MP would drive Melaka's efforts to advance as a world-class tourism state, a regional halal industry hub, and a state resilient to future challenges. He said 13MP would boost Melaka's position as a premier tourism destination, a regional halal industry centre, and a state better prepared to face climate change challenges and future infrastructure needs. "The establishment of the Malaysian Halal Commission is also expected to strengthen Melaka's position as a more strategic halal hub, and certainly, this initiative will be fully utilised for the well-being of the people of Melaka as a whole. "The Melaka government is also committed to supporting the national aspiration to increase the country's halal export value to RM80 billion and contribute 11 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through the development of the Halal Industrial Park in Melaka," he said in a statement today. During the tabling yesterday, Anwar reportedly said the move to boost the country's halal export value would be supported by the establishment of the halal commission and the development of Halal Industrial Parks, including in Melaka, Perak, and Kelantan. Meanwhile, Ab Rauf also welcomed the federal government's announcement on the development of Special Tourism Investment Zones (STIZ), which would also focus on Melaka. He said STIZ would act as a catalyst for the creation of new tourism products based on art, culture, heritage, and nature, indirectly making Melaka a more competitive destination on the international stage. "In terms of disaster management, Melaka will benefit from the implementation of the Sungai Baru Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), which is expected to reduce flood risks and impacts, thereby improving public safety," he said. At the same time, Ab Rauf said the Melaka government had planned development proposals under Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) of 13MP for 2026, amounting to 258 high-impact projects with a total value of RM7.15 billion. He said the proposed projects would focus on developing modern infrastructure, strengthening the digital economy, and empowering strategic industries to ensure the state's sustainable growth. Ab Rauf also fully supported the Water Sector Transformation Plan 2040 (AIR2040), spearheaded by the federal government. He said the state government would work closely with the federal government to ensure water supply capacity and efficiency are in line with the development of new residential areas and growing industrial demand in Melaka.

Penang CM hails US tariff cut as relief for Malaysia and Penang's export sector, urges deeper trade concessions
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 1 — The United States' (US) decision to reduce the tariff rate from 25 per cent to 19 per cent is a positive development for Malaysia's export sector, particularly in Penang, which is active in industries such as electrical and electronics (E&E), manufacturing, and medical devices. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the move places Malaysia on par with other Asean countries, helping to create a level playing field in regional trade. 'This is a welcome development that provides relief to the country's export sector, particularly in Penang, and it is a blessing. The tariff rate has been reduced and is now comparable to those of other Asean countries. 'This development has therefore placed most Asean countries on an equal footing in terms of Asean regional trade relations, and it marks a step towards enhancing Malaysia's trade competitiveness,' he told reporters here today. He said this after launching the National Month and the Penang-level Raising of the Jalur Gemilang ceremony, which was also attended by the Penang State Legislative Assembly Speaker, Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang, who is also chairman of the Penang State Government Official Councils. Chow was responding to media reports that the US will impose a reduced 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian imports, effective Aug 1, 2025. On July 7, Washington had announced a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the US, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs, effective Aug 1 this year. This figure was one percentage point higher than the tariff rate announced in April. Commenting further, Chow said that the revised tariff is just the beginning, as Malaysia still faces stiff competition from other regional countries that enjoy lower or zero tariff rates under various trade agreements. 'We are awaiting further details from the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the Federal Government regarding which sectors may be affected or benefit,' he said. He noted that the state government has urged the Federal Government to continue negotiations to secure greater tariff concessions for strategic sectors, in order to maintain Malaysia's competitiveness in the global supply chain and its ability to attract high-value investments. 'The state government remains committed to supporting local industries and exporters as they adapt to the ever-evolving global trade landscape,' Chow said. On a related note, he described US President Donald Trump's reported intention to attend the upcoming Asean Summit as a positive sign that trade challenges between both sides can still be addressed through negotiation and mutual understanding. Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire: Malaysia proposes Asean monitoring team
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has proposed the establishment of a monitoring team comprising at least 33 military personnel from Asean countries, subject to the mutual agreement of Thailand and Cambodia. Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the proposed team would be stationed at two locations each in Thailand and Cambodia, with seven personnel deployed to each of the four sites and five assigned to the monitoring team's headquarters. Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an unconditional ceasefire on July 28 following talks mediated by Malaysia. Nizam said the establishment was among the proposals discussed by the official Malaysian delegation to Thailand and Cambodia, which he led, in order to continue monitoring and ensure that the ceasefire between the two countries is effectively implemented. Malaysia also proposed establishing an interim monitoring team, led by the Malaysian defence advisers in Bangkok and Phnom Penh, also involving defence advisers from other Asean member countries, he said. "The proposal to establish the monitoring team has been submitted to both parties, and we are awaiting their response. "In this regard, other Asean countries will also play an active role, and the matter will be coordinated by Wisma Putra," he told Berita Harian today. The border tension between Thailand and Cambodia erupted with a shooting incident on May 28, which later escalated into an armed conflict. Cambodia and Thailand have expressed their utmost gratitude to Malaysia for its firmness in playing a role in ensuring the implementation of an immediate ceasefire between the two conflicting countries. Nizam also said that the pre-General Border Committee (GBC) meeting involving Thailand and Cambodia will be held on Aug 4, followed by another meeting the next day with the Asean defence advisers as observers. Both meetings will take place in Kuala Lumpur. "During the previous meeting, I emphasised three main points: the ceasefire must be immediate, there should be no increase in military presence, and the focus should be on medical assistance as part of the monitoring mission's preparation. "Malaysia will remain committed to playing its role as a neutral mediator in supporting the implementation of the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia," he said.
