Mangaluru to host sixth edition of Indian Open of Surfing from May 30 to June 1
The Indian Open of Surfing (IOS), the second stop in the national surfing championship series, is set to return for its sixth edition in Mangaluru from May 30 to June 1.
The three-day surfing competition will witness participation from India's top-ranked surfers in four categories: Men's Open, Women's Open, Groms Boys (U-16) and Groms Girls (U-16), its organisers, Mantra Surf Club and Surfing Swami Foundation, said in a release on Friday.
The Surfing Federation of India (SFI), the governing body for Surfing and Stand-Up Paddling in the country and recognised by the International Surfing Association, has announced the event to be held at Sasihitlu Beach.
The release added that the current edition of the IOS is significant as it offers athletes the opportunity to boost their rankings and enhance their chances of qualifying for the Asian Surf Championship, the qualifier event for the 2026 Asian Games scheduled later this year.
It quoted Arun Vasu, president of the Surfing Federation of India, as saying: 'In 2024, our surfers created history by securing qualification spots for the Asian Games for the first time, marking a significant milestone that has elevated the sport's profile across the country. As we set our sights on Aichi-Nagoya 2026, the competition scheduled promises to be more intense than ever.'
Rammohan Paranjape, vice-president, SFI and director of Mantra Surf Club said: 'The sixth edition of IOS stands as a testament to the dedication and success of the previous editions. I hope this year's event is even more successful and impactful, especially as the sport has gained newfound recognition following our surfers' qualification for the Asian Games last year'.
Prior to the IOS, Surfing Swami Foundation, in collaboration with Panambur Surfing School, Mantra Surf Club, and Indica Surf School, will organise a 'grom search' at Mangaluru's Panambur beach. The initiative aims to identify and nurture young surfing talent from the coastal regions of Karnataka.
Focused on youth development, this event serves as a platform to scout promising young athletes and offer them a pathway into structured coaching programs, mentorship, and long-term development opportunities. The selected groms (young surfers) will be given access to professional training under the guidance of seasoned coaches and affiliated surf schools, helping them build not just sporting careers but also alternate livelihoods and a brighter future, the release said.

Vinith and Muthusamy stressed that the players and staff, led by head coach Dragan Mihailovic, were determined to prove a point at the Nations League. 'We were highly motivated coming into the tournament. Dragan and his staff worked day and night to ensure that we were well-prepared to take on any opponent. 'We were a bit rusty in our first match against Iran (Pool A clash), but the players gelled better on court as the tournament progressed. According to Vinith, the 'right' make-up of the squad helped India display their potential. 'There was a good mix of youth and experience. While the youngsters brought the energy to the court, players like me tried to pass on our knowledge to them. We have seen instances when teams packed with youngsters or experienced players have struggled,' Vinith said.

BCCI floats RFP for IPL and WPL digital services
Mumbai, June 4 (UNI) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday invited proposals from reputed entities to provide digital services for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women's Premier League (WPL), aiming to further enhance the digital presence and fan engagement of both premier T20 competitions. Issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP), the cricket board said, 'The BCCI invites proposals from reputed entities to acquire the rights and obligations to provide services relating to IPL and WPL Digital Properties.' The RFP document outlines the terms, conditions, and technical specifications governing the submission and evaluation of bids. It can be purchased upon payment of a non-refundable fee of Rs 2.50 lakh plus applicable GST for Indian entities, and USD 2,925 for foreign entities. The RFP will be available from June four. The last date to seek clarifications is June 20, the deadline to purchase the RFP is June 25, and completed proposals must be submitted by July seven. Only those meeting the eligibility criteria will be eligible to bid. Indian applicants must have a minimum annual turnover of Rs 15 crore, while foreign applicants must show equivalent turnover. Applicants must also have at least eight years of relevant digital service experience, with preference given to those with a track record in sports, particularly cricket, and expertise in broadcast-integrated digital solutions. 'It is clarified that merely purchasing the RFP does not entitle any person to bid,' the BCCI stated, adding that only those who meet the eligibility conditions and submit complete documentation will be allowed to participate in the bidding process. Interested parties must email payment confirmation to [rfp@ as per the procedure laid out in the RFP's Annexure A. The RFP documents will be shared only after verification of payment and relevant details. Youngsters should not jump into ISL, game time more important: Naushad Moosa
Naushad Moosa is coaching the India under-23 team Panaji: Naushad Moosa has returned as head coach of the India under-23 squad. This time, he has been handed a longer rope, stretching a year, and tasked with preparing the team for next year's Asian Games and the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, qualifiers for which will be held in September. Last year, Moosa, assistant to Juan Pedro at NorthEast United, was in charge of the under-23 team for two friendlies against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. 'The longer contract helps me understand the players better,' Moosa told TOI in a recent interview. 'I spoke with the AIFF and told them it's important to have longer camps as well, so that we can properly assess the players and opponents. I want to bring the best out of these players. Getting them to gel together, though, will be a challenge.' Moosa, a former international who played for India between 1994 and 1998 and won the SAFF Championship in 1997, has named a 29-member probable squad for the two friendlies in Dushanbe against Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic, later this month. A concern for Moosa is that a majority of players are with ISL clubs. Many of them are without enough playing time in the top tier of Indian football. 'The younger under-19 players, all of them want to play for ISL clubs. My advice is don't jump (straightway) into the ISL. Of course, you should try, but only a few make it to the top. The youngsters can sign for clubs where they get to play. At this age, it's important for them to be playing competitive matches. Sitting on the bench for financially-rich clubs doesn't really help in their growth as players,' said Moosa. 'The younger players in the ISL are not getting enough opportunities. There are a lot of promising players in the I-League who we will track,' added Moosa. From amongst the 29 probables, only a handful have featured regularly for their teams in the ISL. Just one among them, Vibin Mohanan, has a senior team appearance, though Ayush Chhetri, Abhishek Singh and Suhail Bhat, all aged below 23, are currently under Manolo Marquez with the national team. Mohammed Sanan, Nikhil Barla (both Jamshedpur), Korou Singh, Bikash Yumnam (both Kerala Blasters), Macarton Louis Nickson, Parthib Gogoi (both NorthEast United) and Dipendu Biswas (Mohun Bagan) are the more recognisable names among the under-23 probables. Only two players -- Rahul Raju (Gokulam Kerala) and Mohammad Arbaz (Real Kashmir) – are doing duty in the I-League, the second tier tournament. 'We need to have more camps, more exposure matches. If we cannot travel abroad, we can play here, but with stronger opponents. Losing is not a problem. It's important we play stronger opponents to prepare for the challenges. Our aim should not be to win SAFF. We must look at the bigger stage where we will be properly judged,' said Moosa. India U-23 will face Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic in two friendlies on June 18 and June 21 as part of the AIFF's long-term plans to smoothen a pathway to the senior national team. The team is in Kolkata where they will train before setting off for Dushanbe on June 16.
