Liam Delap backed to break curse of the Chelsea No 9 shirt and earn England spot

The Guardian6 hours ago

Enzo Maresca has backed Liam Delap to handle the pressure of leading the line for Chelsea and is adamant that the striker will become England's next No 9.
Delap is eager to make a strong first impression following his £30m move from Ipswich Town and will hope to make his Chelsea debut when the Premier League side open their Club World Cup campaign by facing Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC in Atlanta on Monday.
The 22-year-old, who was unable to keep Ipswich in the top flight despite scoring 12 goals last season, is competing with Nicolas Jackson for a starting spot in attack and does not seem overawed by his new surroundings. It is encouraging that Delap has paid little attention to claims of a curse befalling Chelsea's No 9 shirt, which has been vacant since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club two years ago.
The England Under-21 international has jumped at the chance to make the shirt his own, even though Romelu Lukaku and Fernando Torres are examples of expensive No 9s who flopped at Chelsea. Delap is keen to make his mark and add more ruthlessness to an attack that has suffered from wasteful finishing in recent years.
'Liam knows quite well how important the number nine is for this club,' Maresca said. 'I don't see any problem. I see Liam quite relaxed, easy, he's doing well, since he arrived he's working well. We know each other already from years ago, so I know what Liam can give us. He knows what we can give to him to improve and to become a better player. In terms of No 9, hopefully he can score goals for us.'
Maresca coached Delap when he was part of Manchester City's academy. That connection proved handy when it came to convincing Delap to sign a six-year deal with Chelsea and snub offers from Manchester United, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. However Maresca has not decided if the former Ipswich forward is above Jackson in the pecking order.
'The message is always the same – you arrive, you work hard, you work more than the other No 9,' the Italian said. 'The conversation with Liam has been quite clear. He was keen to join us because he knows the way we play. We won for the first time for City the Under-23 competition – he scored 24, 25 goals that season.
'He knows exactly what we can give him, to him and I know what Liam can give us. The conversation was quite easy. We like Liam, Liam like us. I don't have any doubt that he can be in the future England No 9.'
Maresca said that Chelsea intend to sign another winger after sending Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United. The west Londoners are interested in Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens.

Chelsea have added Delap, Andrey Santos, Mamadou Sarr, Mike Penders and Dario Essugo to their squad since qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Uefa Conference League last month. They have been busy in the transfer market but Maresca refused to reveal whether they will revive a move for the Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The attempt to sign Maignan has caused uncertainty over Chelsea's goalkeeping situation. There have been indications that the club will listen to suitable offers for Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. Djordje Petrovic has asked to be omitted for the squad and is likely to leave after impressing on loan at Strasbourg. However, Maresca insisted that Sanchez remains first choice.
'The situation about the keepers is quite easy,' he said. 'Robert is the number one. Then we have Filip, the number two. Penders joined us. We're going to see in the next weeks. We have time to analyse and to judge him.'

Gary Speed's generous act shows exactly the kind of man former Wales manager was

Gary Speed's generous act shows exactly the kind of man former Wales manager was The late Gary Speed carved out a career that demanded respect on and off the pitch, and one of the former Wales manager's players has shared an epitomising anecdote Ex-Sheffield United player Jamie Ward has opened up about playing under Gary Speed (Image: Under The Cosh ) Former Sheffield United forward Jamie Ward has shed light on what a commendable man the late former Wales manager and Premier League icon Gary Speed was. The footballing world was rocked in November 2011 when it was announced that former Newcastle United and Leeds United midfielder Speed had taken his own life at the age of 42. ‌ Speed had built a reputation as a caring and naturally talented midfielder on the pitch, and carried such traits over to management after hanging up his boots and taking over as head coach at his former club, Sheffield United, in 2010. ‌ Ward, who had only joined the Blades the year prior, was asked about playing under Speed, who would go on to take the Wales job in 2011. The 39-year-old shared a tidbit that embodied Speed, admitting that the manager offered to pay him an assist bonus out of his own pocket, as one was not present in Ward's contract. "He was a leader," Ward began, speaking on the Under The Cosh podcast. "But, when I joined the club, Speedo didn't play. He was still a player, but he was injured. He'd kind of transitioned onto the coaching staff. "So, at that point, we knew at some point he was going to be the first team manager. He was a natural leader, wasn't he? From all the clubs that he had captained, to being in the changing room. Article continues below "Actually, when he became the manager, he turned around to me, because I didn't have an assist bonus, and he said to me: 'I see you don't have an assist bonus. So, every time you set a goal up, I'm gonna give you £250 of my own money.' "That kind of tells you what kind of guy he was. Next game, we played Derby away. Put two on a plate for Ched Evans, misses them both. Speed was loved by many of the players he managed (Image: Getty Images ) ‌ "I was having a baby at the time, and I was thinking, 'That'd get me a f*****g pushchair if he scored them!' £500. I didn't take any of his money. "I didn't set any goals up! But going back to that, it shows you what kind of guy he was, to take it out of your own pocket and give it to someone else." Ward continued, recollecting some confusion around what he would call Speed when he arrived at Bramall Lane, in light of the late star having built up such distinction throughout his years in the Premier League. Article continues below "When I turned up, that was the one man that I looked at, and was like, 'Wow.' So starstruck," Ward added. "Because growing up, I'd seen all his career. "I didn't know what to call him. I said to him, 'What do I call you?' I actually turned around to him and said that. 'Is it Gary, Speedo, Speedy?' "I think he said, 'Just call me Speedo.' Because I didn't know, and I just wanted to make sure I was getting it right. When he got the manager's job, I asked him again!"

Club World Cup predictions: Monday group-stage tips and odds

Our expert has tips for all three of Monday's Club World Cup matches, including an intriguing Group C clash between Boca Juniors and Benfica at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami (kick-off, 11pm BST). He also has predictions for two Group D matches: Chelsea's opener against Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC, plus Flamengo vs ES Tunis in the early hours of Tuesday. Odds courtesy of Sky Bet. Chelsea vs LAFC (Atlanta, Monday 8pm BST) Having a bloated squad is not ideal but for Chelsea it means they should cope with the current volume of football better than most, and they should start their Club World Cup campaign with a win over Los Angeles FC. The Blues finished the season with eight wins in their last nine games, securing the Conference League title in the process, whereas LAFC are barely keeping pace in the MLS Western Conference. The Californians are at least playing in their home country and striker Denis Bouanga poses a threat along with former Blues centre-forward Olivier Giroud, who is a danger off the bench, so a Chelsea win and both teams to score appeals at 15/8. Boca Juniors vs Benfica (Miami, Monday 11pm BST) This contest could be crucial in determining who progresses from Group C and a tentative affair could be on the cards in Miami. Benfica's Primeira Liga campaign was not their best and, while Vangelis Pavlidis is a capable striker, their link-up play in the attacking third has been lacking all season. Their average of 1.75 goals per game in the Champions League, meanwhile, shows there is room for offensive improvement. Boca are a physical side who are likely to rely on counter-attacks but they have also underwhelmed in the final third of late and under 2.5 goals is the best bet at 4/5, having clicked in four of the South American side's last five games. Flamengo vs ES Tunis (Philadelphia, Tuesday 2am BST) Flamengo are worth keeping an eye on in this new-look Club World Cup. Top of Brazil's Serie A and in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores, they are enjoying a terrific season and can lay down a marker with a comfortable win over their Tunisian opponents. Experienced figures Danilo and Jorginho have just been added to a side known for their flying full-backs and the creative spark of midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta and they sit 78th in the world in the Opta Power Rankings, with ES Tunis in 255th. That suggests this could be a one-sided affair and Flamengo are worth a bet at -1 goal on the handicap at 10/11, having won by two goals or more in three of their last four fixtures.

Former Man United star claims some players are 'intimidated' by the 'weight of the shirt' - after Scott McTominay and Antony thrived away from Old Trafford

Man United academy produced Angel Gomes has claimed players have struggled to cope with the 'weight of the shirt' at the Premier League giants, before moving on to thrive elsewhere. The England international joined the Red Devils at the age of six and made his debut at 16 in 2017, becoming the youngest player to represent the club since Duncan Edwards in 1953. Gomes ultimately made 10 appearances for Man United's senior team before opting to join Lille on a free transfer in 2020. The midfielder, who has agreed to join Marseille this summer, has thrived in Ligue 1 and earned four England caps last year under then interim manager Lee Carsley. Gomes is among the players to have impressed since leaving Man United in recent years, with several having starred across the continent after being criticised for their displays at Old Trafford. The 24-year-old, speaking to the BBC, suggested some players have underestimated the 'weight of the shirt'. Gomes claimed some players may have been 'intimidated' by playing for Man United and have struggled to live up to expectations of playing for the record 13-time Premier League champions as they seek to win the title again for the first time since 2012. 'I think some do,' Gomes said .'Players may have been intimidated or not really know about the weight, what it carries and what it takes. 'But ultimately, sometimes, it's down to environment, timing and having the right things in place to help you. 'Some players who have left and gone on to do better than when they were at United, there might be things in place at that certain club, at that moment in time, that helped them succeed. 'Sometimes it's not as black and white as they failed or they've not held their own there because of the weight of the shirt.' Gomes comments come after several maligned Man United players have left the club to enjoy success elsewhere this season. Scott McTominay, another Man United youth product, was named as Serie A's most valuable player this season. McTominay joined Napoli last summer in a 27.5m move, with the Scotland international contributing 12 goals and six assists from midfield to help Antonio Conte's side claim the title. Brazilian winger Antony has been derided for his performances at Man United since an £82million switch from Ajax, having only contributed 12 goals and five assists in 96 matches. The winger has been revitalised after joining Real Betis on loan in January, with the Brazilian having scored nine times and provided five assists. Antony's turnaround in form in La Liga has led to him earning a recall to the Brazilian national team. He admitted last month that he had fallen out of love with football at Man United. 'I wanted to do things, but they didn't seem to work out because I wasn't happy, I didn't feel that desire to play football, and I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved,' Antony said. 'I went through difficult times [at Manchester United] when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn't take it anymore. '[My brother] told me to hold on a little longer, that things were going to change . It even made me emotional, because they were very hard days for me. 'Only I know what it was like to be there at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room. Antony broke down in tears last month when explaining his struggles when at Man United 'So, for me it was very complicated, but thank God, with the help of my family and mainly with the help of God, I managed to get ahead and today I am very happy here.' Man United endured their worst Premier League campaign last season, with Ruben Amorim's side finishing 15th in the table. The Red Devils will not play in Europe next season after losing to Tottenham in last month's Europa League final, which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification.
