Former Man United star claims some players are 'intimidated' by the 'weight of the shirt' - after Scott McTominay and Antony thrived away from Old Trafford

Daily Mail6 hours ago

Man United academy produced Angel Gomes has claimed players have struggled to cope with the 'weight of the shirt' at the Premier League giants, before moving on to thrive elsewhere.
The England international joined the Red Devils at the age of six and made his debut at 16 in 2017, becoming the youngest player to represent the club since Duncan Edwards in 1953.
Gomes ultimately made 10 appearances for Man United's senior team before opting to join Lille on a free transfer in 2020.
The midfielder, who has agreed to join Marseille this summer, has thrived in Ligue 1 and earned four England caps last year under then interim manager Lee Carsley.
Gomes is among the players to have impressed since leaving Man United in recent years, with several having starred across the continent after being criticised for their displays at Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old, speaking to the BBC, suggested some players have underestimated the 'weight of the shirt'.
Gomes claimed some players may have been 'intimidated' by playing for Man United and have struggled to live up to expectations of playing for the record 13-time Premier League champions as they seek to win the title again for the first time since 2012.
'I think some do,' Gomes said .'Players may have been intimidated or not really know about the weight, what it carries and what it takes.
'But ultimately, sometimes, it's down to environment, timing and having the right things in place to help you.
'Some players who have left and gone on to do better than when they were at United, there might be things in place at that certain club, at that moment in time, that helped them succeed.
'Sometimes it's not as black and white as they failed or they've not held their own there because of the weight of the shirt.'
Gomes comments come after several maligned Man United players have left the club to enjoy success elsewhere this season.
Scott McTominay, another Man United youth product, was named as Serie A's most valuable player this season.
McTominay joined Napoli last summer in a 27.5m move, with the Scotland international contributing 12 goals and six assists from midfield to help Antonio Conte's side claim the title.
Brazilian winger Antony has been derided for his performances at Man United since an £82million switch from Ajax, having only contributed 12 goals and five assists in 96 matches.
The winger has been revitalised after joining Real Betis on loan in January, with the Brazilian having scored nine times and provided five assists.
Antony's turnaround in form in La Liga has led to him earning a recall to the Brazilian national team.
He admitted last month that he had fallen out of love with football at Man United.
'I wanted to do things, but they didn't seem to work out because I wasn't happy, I didn't feel that desire to play football, and I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved,' Antony said.
'I went through difficult times [at Manchester United] when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn't take it anymore.
'[My brother] told me to hold on a little longer, that things were going to change . It even made me emotional, because they were very hard days for me.
'Only I know what it was like to be there at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room.
Antony broke down in tears last month when explaining his struggles when at Man United
'So, for me it was very complicated, but thank God, with the help of my family and mainly with the help of God, I managed to get ahead and today I am very happy here.'
Man United endured their worst Premier League campaign last season, with Ruben Amorim's side finishing 15th in the table.
The Red Devils will not play in Europe next season after losing to Tottenham in last month's Europa League final, which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification.

Jack Grealish 'conned' into paying fan's bill as the Man City star soaks up the sun in Greece after being left out of Pep Guardiola's Club World Cup squad

Jack Grealish has gone viral on TikTok after seemingly being conned into paying a fan's bill while on holiday in Greece. The England international, 29, has opted to soak up the sun after being omitted from Pep Guardiola 's Manchester City squad for the Club World Cup. But while he may be topping up his tan, his bank account is now a little lighter after being tricked into forking out for a guest. A video posted on TikTok by Patric Persson shows the prankster being handed a bill which he then takes over to Grealish as the City winger relaxes by the pool. Persson then asks Grealish for his autograph and he is happy to oblige, but does not realise that he is actually signing for the bill. Grealish and Persson shake hands, before the latter returns to the bill to the waiter, having seemingly got Grealish to pay for whatever he ordered. It seems Grealish was unaware of the joke, but he may have been willing to pay for the bill himself anyway, having previously shown his generous side earlier this year. Mail Online revealed in March how Grealish stunned regulars in a Sunderland social club by paying £500 towards a drinks tab for everyone at the bar. Grealish was later seen stumbling out of a Newcastle nightclub, and has endured a difficult last few months that has seen him fall out of favour at City. He was an unused substitute in City's FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace, and then failed to make the squad for the final Premier League game of the season at Fulham. After sealing a Champions League spot without Grealish, Guardiola was asked about the winger's future but refused to give a direct answer. However, he did state that he wants a smaller squad next season, indicating that fringe players such as Grealish are likely to be moved on. City have already signed Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Marcus Bettinelli this month, and are expected to start offloading players in the coming weeks. This could see Grealish head towards the exit door after four years at the Etihad, and Napoli could offer him an escape route. The Serie A champions are reportedly interested in signing a left winger this summer after losing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG in January, and have reportedly shown interest in bringing in either Grealish or Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho.

Real Betis ‘make offer to buy Antony from Man Utd in rarely seen £17m co-ownership transfer'

Chiefs have already flown in for talks in neutral city TIS THE SEASON Real Betis 'make offer to buy Antony from Man Utd in rarely seen £17m co-ownership transfer' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) REAL BETIS have reportedly made an offer to buy Antony from Manchester United in a rare £17million co-ownership transfer. The Brazilian winger was shipped out on loan to Spain in January after failing to impress Ruben Amorim. 2 Real Betis are looking to sign Antony on the cheap in a rarely-seen deal Credit: Getty Antony looked a different player under Manuel Pellegrini as his five goals and two assists helped Betis qualify for the Europa League. He even picked up a silver medal after finishing as a runner-up to Chelsea in the Conference League final. But Antony is now back at United after his Betis loan came to an end. The former Ajax man cost £86m to sign in 2022 but has struggled for form and is expected to depart United once again. Antony has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen for another reunion with Erik ten Hag. But Betis are hopeful of bringing him back to Spain. And ABC Sevilla claims club chiefs travelled to England for talks with United last week. It's reckoned that Betis proposed a rarely-seen deal that would see them pay just £17m to become theoretical co-owners of Antony. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS Outright co-ownership is common in European football but is banned in the Premier League. So in practice, it would see Antony join Betis for a low figure, while leaving United entitled to a high sell-on clause potentially worth 50 per cent. 'Bring him back' - Antony needs another chance at Man Utd under Ruben Amorim, says club legend 2 It's claimed that Betis chiefs are now confident of striking a deal, but the Red Devils are insisting on a higher fee up front. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made no secret of his desire to raise funds for new transfers. And accepting just £17m would see United make a staggering £69m loss on a player signed just three years ago. Yet Betis hope the lure of a 50 per cent sell-on clause will turn the deal in their favour and could even be prepared to up the initial fee slightly.
