Health Minister launches Haemophilia App in Salem
Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian, launched the Haemophilia App at Yercaud in the district on Thursday.
Mr. Subramanian and Tourism Minister R. Rajendran inaugurated the two-day seminar for government medical officers on leadership and performance development, Med Lead-2025, at Yercaud. The ministers inaugurated the fertility centre at Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, Psychiatric Emergency Treatment, and Rehabilitation Centre.
Speaking at the function, Mr. Rajendran highlighted that the Health and Family Welfare Department's performance over the past four years was being appreciated across the country, and noted that the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme has benefited 2.15 crore people statewide, with 11.2 lakh individuals receiving support in Salem district alone. Additionally, over 3,40,000 people have benefited under the Innuyir Kappom Nammai Kakkum 48 initiative, including 16,527 people in Salem district. 'The Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme received an award from the United Nations (UN) for its impact. Across the state, 1,000 Mudhalvar Marunthagam centres have been established. Furthermore, following Chennai, a new fertility centre is being inaugurated in Salem,' the Minister added.
Mr. Subramanian said that medical infrastructure in the state has seen several upgrades over the last four years through various schemes, and thousands of people have begun to utilise the medical services in government facilities like hospitals, primary health centres and medical college hospitals. 'Before DMK came to power, six lakh people utilised the medical services and now it has increased to 10 lakh per day. The work of upgrading 50 new rural and urban primary health centres and 208 urban wellness centres at a cost of ₹1,018 crore is nearing completion, and will soon be inaugurated,' the minister added.
Mr. Subramanian also added that this was the first time 178 medical officers, including medical college deans, deputy directors, health officers, and head of departments were participating in a seminar.
Regarding the show cause notices issued to medical colleges in Tamil Nadu by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for not meeting certain standards, Mr. Subramaniam said such notices are a usual process, and clear explanations have been given for them. For the first time, 2,462 doctors were recruited, and Tamil Nadu will firmly oppose the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the minister added.

NEET-PG 2025 deferred as SC asks NBEMS to conduct exam in single shift
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has postponed the NEET-PG 2025 examination following a directive from the Supreme Court, which has instructed that the test be conducted in a single shift to ensure transparency and fairness. The examination, earlier scheduled for June 15, 2025, will now be held on a revised date, which NBEMS said would be announced shortly. While hearing a petition last week (W.P. No. 456/2025 – Aditi & Ors vs National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences & Ors), the Supreme Court directed the exam-conducting body to revise its plan and hold the test in a single shift. In its order, the court stated: 'We, accordingly, direct the respondents to make necessary arrangements for holding the NEET -PG 2025, examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned.' NBEMS responds with deferment Complying with the court's order, NBEMS on Monday (June 2) issued an official notification confirming the change in format and postponement of the exam. 'Accordingly, NBEMS will conduct NEET-PG 2025 in a single shift,' the authority said. The board added: 'NEET-PG 2025 scheduled to be held on 15.06.2025 has been postponed to arrange for more Test Centres and required infrastructure. The revised date for conduct of NEET-PG 2025 shall be notified shortly.' Logistical adjustments underway The decision to move to a single-shift format means that NBEMS will need to significantly expand its test centre capacity to accommodate all candidates at once. The move is aimed at standardising exam conditions and addressing concerns over disparities observed in previous multi-shift examinations. The shift in schedule has major implications for thousands of medical graduates preparing for the crucial postgraduate entrance test. Several doctors' groups have been seeking clarity from NBEMS on the exam format and timing. Meanwhile, the candidates have been advised to regularly check the official NBEMS website for updates regarding the revised examination date and related instructions.

Yoga camp held at Puligundu tourism spot in Chittoor
District Collector Sumit Kumar and Superintendent of Police Manikantha Chandolu on Monday jointly inaugurated Yogandhra -2025 programme held at Puligundu, a famous tourism spot near Penumuru, 25 km from Chittoor. The event witnessed the participation of about 3,000 participants including youth, women, and officials. Addressing the gathering, the Collector highlighted the importance of making yoga a part of daily life. He said that every person, irrespective of age and gender, should inculcate a habit of practicing yoga for at least 30 minutes a day, and this could significantly reduce stress and prevent health issues. He said that as part of the ongoing yoga festival, scheduled from May 21 to June 21 at various levels from village to district headquarters, the special focus would be on promoting yoga at tourist spots. 'As part of the month-long schedule, a major yoga camp was conducted at the Kanipakam temple. The overwhelming participation of the public is a testimony to the growing awareness of the importance of yoga,' Mr. Kumar said. SP Manikantha Chandolu appealed to the public to understand the message enshrined in the practice of yoga and incorporate it along with other healthy eating habits. The officials informed the Collector that so far 2.5 lakh people have registered for the Yogandhra event across Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, Chittoor has over 5,000 trained yoga instructors who were roped in to conduct yoga camps across the district.

COPD, hypertension and diabetes detection drive planned in Tiruchi district
Health authorities will be organising awareness programmes and early screening for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) as well launching a service to detect hypertension and diabetes among workers in small commercial establishments in Tiruchi district this week as part of a Statewide initiative to integrate them under the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (MTM) scheme. According to an official press release, the COPD programmes will be launched on June 4 under the supervision of the State Nnon-communicable Diseases (NCD) Section with the support of National Health Mission-Tamil Nadu. COPD is a long-term lung disease causing persistent cough and breathlessness, especially common in people exposed to smoke and dust. Symptoms include chronic cough for over eight weeks, breathlessness during daily activity, wheezing or chest tightness and sputum production. Smokers, users of biomass fuels, and people working in dusty environments are at high risk of COPD. The programme will involve the participation of all the 84 Primary Health Centres, including those under Tiruchi Corporation, that have been mapped to their nearest tertiary care centre and functional spirometry facility (Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital), said the release. Spirometry tests will be available free of cost at designated centres. Monthly results of the screening would be reported to the State NCD Section. On June 5, a programme to screen 25,571 workers in nearly 878 factories and small commercial establishments for hypertension and diabetes will be launched in Tiruchi district, covering the blocks of Lalgudi, Manapparai, Manachallur, Marungapuri, Musiri, Thiruverumbur, Thuraiyur, Thottiyam, and Tiruchi Corporation. The firms with less than 1,000 employees were identified through the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) for the programme. The initiative will be implemented through the existing Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) – both Regular and Tribal – without deviation from the fixed tour programme by integrating workplace screening with routine outreach activities at the block level. The programme aim at promoting early detection of hypertension and diabetes among labourers, and ensure timely referral of suspected/confirmed NCD cases to the nearest government health facility for further management. Over 5 lakh workers had been identified for the programme throughout the State, said the release.
