Yomiuri Giants starter Iori Yamasaki extended his scoreless innings streak to open the 2025 NPB season to 35 on Wednesday night, April 30 at Tokyo Dome.
Yamasaki (4-0) held the Hiroshima Carp to five hits and struck out six in seven sharp innings. He walked one batter in Yomiuri's 2-0 victory.
In five starts this season, Yamasaki hasn't allowed a run. And on the final evening of April, he broke the Central League record for most consecutive scoreless innings to open a season. Etsuo Nakai of the Hanshin Tigers set the previous mark of 31 innings in 1963. Hanshin's Shoki Murakami equaled Nakai's feat in 2023.
"I'm happy to have pitched [seven] scoreless innings, but I'm even happier and more proud that we won the game," Yamasaki said, according to NHK.
After Yamasaki's latest strong start, Giants manager Shinnosuke Abe commended the pitcher's performance.
"That's 100 points for great pitching," Abe said, according to NHK. "It's a great record, and I don't think it's easy to achieve, but at some point, you're going to get scored on."
In the sixth inning, Giants first baseman Riku Masuda provided the only run support Yamasaki needed, smacking a two-run double. It was Masuda's first extra-base hit of the season. Iori Yamasaki (©SANKEI)
With one out and runners on first and second in the seventh inning, Yamasaki quelled the Carp's scoring threat. He struck out pinch hitters Shogo Sakakura and Shota Dobayashi to preserve the shutout.
"I was feeling like I had to give it my all," Yamasaki said, according to NHK, describing a key sequence in the game. Yamasaki added that Giants catcher Takuya Kai encouraged him, saying, "Come on," the Japanese national broadcaster reported.
It helped.
"I was able to throw the ball with a lot of energy," Yamasaki said.
Yamasaki, in his fourth NPB season, left the game after making 112 pitches.
Giants reliever Kota Nakagawa worked a 1-2-3 eighth, and closer Raidel Martinez recorded his ninth save of the season with a three-up, three-down ninth.
Yomiuri (15-11-1) won its third straight game and sits in first place in the CL standings.
As an NPB rookie, Yamasaki went 5-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 2022. He posted a 10-5 record with a 2.72 ERA the next season, and he had nearly identical numbers (10-6, 2.81) in 2024.

Volleyball: Japan Women Have Lofty Ambitions for the World Championship
Captain Mayu Ishikawa and her teammates are seeking to collect Japan's first FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship medal since 2010. (©SANKEI) The Japan women's volleyball national team is seeking to take its game to the next level at the 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship. Japan enters the tournament in Thailand with a 15-year medal drought at the world championship. As tourney host, it earned the bronze medal in Tokyo in 2010. Currently ranked fifth in the world, Japan faces 44th-ranked Cameroon in its Pool H preliminary phase opener on Saturday, August 23 (7 PM JST) in Bangkok. After that, head coach Ferhat Akbas' squad takes on 16th-ranked Ukraine on Monday, August 25 and No 9 Serbia two days later. The round of 16 begins on August 29, and the winner will be crowned on September 7. In preparation for the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship, Japan participated in the Women's Volleyball Nations League earlier this summer. Captain Mayu Ishikawa and her teammates were eliminated from title contention in the semifinals, dropping a hard-fought, five-set match to Brazil on July 26 in Lodz, Poland. In the third-place match, Poland outplayed Japan, including a 15-2 advantage in blocks. Now, getting ready to play in another high-profile international competition, Ishikawa said her team's focus should be internal. "Rather than focusing on the opponent, I think it's important to concentrate on what we need to do first in the opening match," Ishikawa said in an interview with TBS News. "Ultimately, we aim to advance toward medal contention, and I believe the positive team atmosphere is one of our strengths," she added. "Regardless of the situation, we want to maintain that atmosphere and win as a team." Japan coach Ferhat Akbas instructs the team during a training session on August 13 in Tokyo. (©SANKEI) Supervised by Turkish coach Akbas, Japan held an open practice on August 13 at the Ajinomoto National Training Center in Tokyo's Kita Ward. It was part of a pre-world championship training camp. Speaking after the open practice, 25-year-old Ishikawa said she was pleased with the overall productivity of the team's recent practices. "The precision of our team practices has improved, and we've prepared our strategies," Ishikawa said, according to NHK. "We'll do our best to secure the medal we couldn't win in the Nations League. I want to take the lead and drive the team forward." Yoshino Sato in a file photo from the 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League. (©VOLLEYBALL WORLD) In addition to Ishikawa, Japan's key players include outside hitters Yukiko Wada and Yoshino Sato, middle blockers Ayaka Araki and Haruyo Shimamura and setter Nanami Seki, among others. Ishikawa was second overall in points (50) at the recent Women's Volleyball Nations League, while Wada was tied for fifth (43). Sato was seventh (37). Among attackers, Ishikawa had the most kills (46), underscoring her vital role for Japan. Wada also scored most of her points on attack (42, fourth-most) in the tourney. Seki was the top setter in the Volleyball Nations League, with her 40.17% success rate topping the chart. Japan's Yukiko Wada looks to score a point against Brazil in a match at the 2024 Paris Olympics. (KYODO) Looking back at the Volleyball Nations League, Wada said she was disappointed Japan's players didn't return home with medals. "We were able to score points in the early stages, but in the latter stages, [our opponents] started to play defensively, and there were more unpleasant situations," Wada was quoted as saying by Sports Hochi . "So it was difficult to see the results we wanted." Despite some difficulties in Poland, the 2024 Paris Olympian believes Japan has made demonstrable improvements as a team that will lead to success in Thailand. "We are going to the World Volleyball Championship to win a medal," Wada told reporters at the August 13 training camp. She then said, "We want to prove the results of what we have done this year." The Japan women's volleyball team poses for a photo at the Ajinomoto National Training Center on August 13 in Tokyo's Kita Ward. Holding the cake is Tsukasa Nakagawa on her 25th birthday. (KYODO) Starting with this tournament, the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship will be held every two years. Previously, it was staged once every four years. In addition, the 2025 tournament is the first with a 32-nation field. Previously, it was a 24-nation competition. Serbia won its second consecutive world title in 2022, beating Brazil in the final. Pivetta strikes out 10 in combined 4-hitter as the Padres beat the Giants 5-1
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta allowed a leadoff homer by Jung Hoo Lee and then settled down to tie his season high with 10 strikeouts in six innings and lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-1 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. The Padres snapped a four-game losing streak and remained two games behind the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Lee homered to right-center on Pivetta's second pitch. It was his second career leadoff shot and sixth homer of the season. Pivetta (13-4) walked two batters that inning but allowed only three more baserunners, on two hits and a hit batter. He combined on a four-hitter with All-Star relievers Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez. Pivetta beat the Giants in consecutive starts, with his most recent outing being an 11-1 win at San Francisco on Aug. 13 during a three-game sweep that helped the Padres take a one-game lead over the Dodgers. The Padres were then swept in a weekend series at Dodger Stadium. The Padres tied it in the bottom of the first when leadoff batter Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on shortstop Christian Koss' throwing error, advanced on Luis Arraez's double and scored on Manny Machado's ground out. The Padres went ahead 3-1 in the fourth when Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-3) had control issues, hitting two batters with pitches to load the bases and then allowing Jose Iglesias' single. Spencer Bivens came on and got a force out before walking Tatis to bring in another run. Key moment Pivetta clenched his fists and hollered as he walked off the mound after striking out his final batter to end the sixth.
