After video goes viral, NIA picks zipline operator
SRINAGAR: Zipline operator Muzamil Ahmed Kumhar, who was heard chanting 'Allahu Akbar' as the terrorists started firing at tourists in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadows on April 22, has been picked up for questioning by the NIA, which is probing the terror attack in which 25 tourists and a local resident were killed.
Muzamil was heard chanting 'Allahu Akbar' thrice in a selfie video shot by Rishi Bhatt, a tourist from Ahmedabad, while taking the zipline ride on the day of the deadly terror attack.
Muzamil's father said his son had visited his home in Anantnag on Monday and was picked up by policemen in the evening. When told that his son had chanted 'Allahu Akbar' when the terrorists fired at the tourists, he said, 'We are Muslims and even if the storm comes, we will say 'Allahu Akbar'. If we do some work, we will say 'Allahu Akbar'. What is in it?'
A sources said, 'The zipline operator is being quizzed by NIA officials about his chanting 'Allahu Akbar' at the start of the terror attack. The NIA and J&K police are probing if he has links with terrorism.'
Muzamil's brother Mukhtar Ahmed said his brother was picked up by police on April 23, a day after the attack, and released on Monday and then picked up again by police in the evening. He said his brother has been working in the zipline for the last three years.
Referring to the video in which Muzamil chants 'Allahu Akbar', Mukhtar said, 'If you see the video, he himself does not know that the terror attack is taking place. He is releasing the tourist's zipline because he himself does not know of the attack.'
He said after the terror attack, he returned home and was very scared. 'He was picked up the next day by police for questioning,' Ahmed said.
Police have identified three Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists, including two Pakistanis and one local, for carrying out the attack on tourists at Baisaran. A massive search operation has been launched in Baisaran and its adjoining forest areas to track down the attackers. 'The operation continued on Tuesday. We will catch them very soon,' a security official said.

Woman among 6 held as Amritsar police bust two international drug cartels
Punjab Police claimed to have busted two international narco-trafficking cartels with the arrest of six drug smugglers, including a woman, and recovered 4 kg heroin, director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday. The accused have been identified as Vishal Singh, 23, of Guru Ki Wadali village in Amritsar, Didar Singh alias Kali, 50, of Jathaul village in Amritsar, Sevenbir Singh, 25, of Burj Sarai Amant Khan village in Tarn Taran, Harjit Singh, 38, alias Jita of Baba Deep Singh Colony in Amritsar, Jaj Singh, 19, of Mohalla Chetuan in Amritsar and Jasbir Kaur, 60, of Kapatgarh in Amritsar. Police have also impounded a Toyota Innova car, which they were using to deliver drug consignments. DGP Yadav said preliminary investigations have revealed that one module is operated by Sevenbir, who is in direct contact with Pakistan-based smugglers. The latter received heroin consignments and operated under the guise of livestock trade, he said. The DGP said the accused, Jasbir Kaur, is linked to infamous smuggler Ranjeet alias Cheeta's cartel and has links with both Indian and Pakistani smugglers. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said both modules were busted in an intel-led operation under the supervision of DCP City Jagjit Singh Walia, ADCP-2 Harpal Singh, ACP West Shivdarshan Singh led by Chheharta police station SHO Vinod Sharma. The CP said accused Sevenbir Singh was running the cartel in garb of sale/purchase of goats for the past five years from which he amassed wealth to build a large kothi in his village apart from other property. The accused had been receiving narcotic consignments through drones sent from across the international border. After retrieval he used to hide the contraband in his relatives' home and later distribute it through his associates. Two FIRs – one under Sections 21-C and 27A, and the other under Sections 21-C and 29 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act have been registered at the Chheharta police station.

Over Rs 56 crore disbursed in compensation to ineligible farmers in Jalna, collector submits interim inquiry report to govt
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: An initial investigation by the Jalna district administration has uncovered significant irregularities in govt compensation distribution to farmers affected by natural disasters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The interim report, submitted by district collector Shrikrishna Panchal to state govt, reveals duplicate payments, fraudulent beneficiaries, and inaccurate land record representations under various govt resolutions between Nov 2022 and Feb 2024. The estimated misappropriation of farmers' compensation funds amounts to Rs 56 crore. Collector Panchal said, "We initiated the inquiry on Jan 28, 2025, after receiving random complaints regarding compensation irregularities. We formed a three-member committee to conduct the probe across the district. The committee comprises the Ambad sub-divisional officer, deputy collector (rehabilitation), and a naib tehsildar." Following BJP Badnapur MLA Narayan Kuche's complaint to the chief minister in April 2025, the chief minister's office (CMO) requested a comprehensive report from the district administration. According to the interim report submitted on April 17, 2025, the investigation examined compensation distributed to farmers across 125 villages in Ambad taluka and 36 villages in Ghansawangi taluka under govt resolutions dated Nov 17, 2022, June 20, 2023, Feb 29, 2024 (Ambad), and Nov 17, 2022, June 20, 2023, Jan 31, 2024, in Ghansawangi. The verification process covered 26,645 beneficiaries, revealing numerous fraudulent entries. A team of four revenue assistants and 15 newly appointed gram revenue officers conducted comparisons between the e-Panchnama Payment Disbursement Portal and land ownership records. They implemented a colour-coding system: Yellow indicated names absent from land records, orange showed excess land claims, red highlighted govt land, and blue marked duplicate entries. Changes in beneficiary data after Jan 1, 2025, await inclusion, and updated figures will follow tehsildar re-verification. The Ghansawangi tehsildar has not responded to clarification requests made on March 3 and April 16, 2025. Investigations continue in 13 villages of Ambad and 81 villages of Ghansawangi talukas. The district administration established a five-member expert committee on April 11, 2025, led by the collector, including the district council CEO, additional district collector, superintendent agriculture officer, and resident deputy collector. The administration has also intensified fund recovery efforts, collecting approximately ₹5 crore from ineligible beneficiaries. Officials receive weekly directives to accelerate the recovery process. For distributions after Sept 2024 under two govt resolutions, ₹448.3 crore was allocated to 2,81,532 beneficiaries. The administration confirms implementing safeguards against similar irregularities. The state government awaits the final report upon investigation's completion. UN food agency appeals for $46 million to help 2 million Haitians facing severe hunger

The appeal was issued by Lola Castro, the World Food Program's regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, who recently returned from Haiti, where escalating gang violence has displaced well over 1 million people and left half the population - 5.7 million people - in urgent need of food. Two million of them are in the two worst categories in the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the leading international authority on hunger crises, and 8,500 are in the worst Phase 5 category, she said. That means at least one in five people or households severely lack food and face starvation and destitution. Haiti is one of only five countries in the world that have people in the Phase 5 category of catastrophic hunger, Castro said, "and it is really dramatic to have this in the Western Hemisphere." Gangs have grown in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021 and are now estimated to control 85 per cent of the capital and are moving into surrounding areas. Haiti has not had a president since the assassination, and the top UN official in the country said in April the country could face "total chaos" without funding to confront the gangs.. A UN-backed mission led by Kenyan police arrived in Haiti last year to help quell gang violence, but the mission remains understaffed and underfunded, with only about 40 per cent of the 2,500 personnel originally envisioned. The WFP, the world's largest humanitarian organization, is among the UN agencies facing funding cuts, mainly from the United States, which provided nearly half of its funding in 2024. Castro said WFP reached over 1.3 million people this year until March using carryover funds from last year. But the agency is facing a dramatic situation now with food stocks only until July to assist with emergencies, new displacements or hurricanes, she said. In the past four years, Castro said WFP always had stocks to help between 250,000 and 500,000 people with any emergency. "This year, we start the hurricane season with an empty warehouse where we have no stocks for assisting any emergency, or we have no cash neither to go and buy (food) locally if it was possible in some areas, or to do a rapid humanitarian response," Castro said. "We are very concerned that a single storm can put hundreds of thousands of people in Haiti again into humanitarian catastrophe and hunger." WFP normally provides a meal every day for around 500,000 school children, but that number will be cut in half without additional resources, she told a video press conference on Tuesday. With $46 million, she said, WFP will be able to help the 2 million Haitians in most need of food, keep providing school meals for half a million children, and provide social protection for very vulnerable people in camps for the displaced. Haiti must not be forgotten as the world deals with other crises, Castro said, urging donors to be generous. "We really need to stop this and to hold the line on hunger," she said. "We continue calling the humanitarian community to provide support." With $46 million, she said, WFP will be able to help the 2 million Haitians in the two worst IPC categories, keep providing school meals for half a million children, and provide social protection for very vulnerable people in camps for the displaced.
