Girl dies in two-car crash in Franklin, one arrested
FRANKLIN, Mass. (WWLP) – A driver is facing drunk driving charges for a crash that killed a young girl and injured several others in Franklin Saturday night.

The crash took place in the area of Grove Street at Beaver Street. The Norfolk District Attorney's Office says the girl's mother and brother are in the hospital, but the father, who was driving, has been released. NBC Boston states the family's car collided with a pickup truck.
The truck's driver, 21-year-old James Blanchard of Franklin, has been arrested. He faces several charges, including motor vehicle homicide, drunk driving, and negligent operation.
Blanchard is being held on $500,000 bail and will appear in Wrentham District Court on Tuesday.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A large fire was put out at a homeless shelter in Pittsfield Wednesday night. Pittsfield police warn residents of retired officer impersonation scheme The Pittsfield Fire Department states that at 7:59 p.m. on Wednesday, crews were sent to 360 West Housatonic Street, Soldier On, for a reported building fire. When crews arrived, a large, open-air shed was fully on fire. The fire was put out within 30 minutes. The main Soldier On building nearby was damaged on the roof and some of the windows. The cause of the fire was determined to be a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery-powered E-Bike. The bike was found charging when it started a 'thermal runaway' of one or more Li-ion fuel cells. The fire then spread to the entire shed. No injuries were reported. Lithium-ion batteries can be found in many household items such as cell phones, laptops and tablets, watches, e-bikes, vape devices, electric vehicles, power tools, and many children's toys. These types of batteries are known for melting, catching fire, and even exploding sometimes. Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smartphones and laptops to scooters and electric vehicles, and they pack a lot of power into a small device. These products should be unplugged after they are finished charging to prevent a fire or explosion. To properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries, they can be brought to a household hazardous waste collection site or a battery recycling center such as Staples, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Multiple police vehicles, K9 spotted on Byers Street in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Multiple Springfield police cruisers have been spotted on Byers Street in Springfield Thursday morning. Springfield Police SVU arrest man in connection with rape and kidnapping Byers Street is right off Pearl Street near the Springfield Police Department. 22News crews are seeing multiple police cruisers, police, and a K9 going in and out of an apartment building. An ambulance can also be seen. It's unclear why police are there at this time. Byers Street is roped off in the area of an apartment building. 22News did reach out to Springfield police, but haven't heard anything yet. Hampden DA's office gives updates on suspects arrested in narcotics takedown
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Hampden District Attorney's Office has shared updates on two of the suspects involved in major drug distributions that were dismantled last month. Hampden DA's Office Communications Director Payton North shared in a news release that Anthony Perez of Springfield is being held without the right to bail per a 58A hearing. He is scheduled for a bail hearing on July 16, and a trial date has not been set at this time. DA Gulluni announces results of three major narcotics investigations in Springfield An investigation began into Perez in the summer of 2024 in connection with fentanyl and heroin distribution in the Springfield area. Law enforcement discovered that Perez was being supplied by a large-scale drug trafficking organization operating both in Springfield and the Bronx, N.Y. Perez was arraigned on January 17, 2025. In addition, 29 other individuals connected with the operation were arrested across several months, with Perez and his associates facing drug trafficking and firearm-related charges. Ruben Luna, who was also arrested as part of the DA's narcotics takedown operation, had a 58A hearing on May 28. He is being held without the right to bail for 120 days. Luna's charges stem from an investigation on May 22, in which state and Springfield police officers conducted searches at three locations. Luna is among three suspects who were arrested during the investigation, and law enforcement seized a large quantity of cocaine, heroin, and narcotic pills across the three locations. 22News will provide updates as more information becomes available.
