The coroner identified him as Makaio Bartley, 28. He was a California native who was stationed at the base, the coroner's office said.
Bartley was driving on Ziegemeir Road at about 10:39 p.m. Sunday when his 2018 Honda Accord left the road, struck a guardrail and then ran into a concrete wall, authorities said.

Law & Order column: Antioch man gets 6 months in fatal crash

An Antioch man who drove around a rail crossing gate a moment before his car was struck by a train, killing his wife and grandson, has been sentenced to six months in jail, according to court records. Anthony J. Shemberger, 73, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in connection with the 2022 crash that killed Patricia Shemberger, 75, and 13-year-old Noah Kucinski. Authorities said Shemberger pulled around a lowered rail crossing gate on Dec. 10, 2022, near Ingleside at the Wilson Road rail crossing by Larkin Lane. A Lake County sheriff's deputy happened to be on the other side of the tracks waiting for the Metra train to pass and witnessed the crash, authorities said. Shemberger's Hyundai Elantra was hit by the commuter train, ejecting his wife, who was in the backseat and fatally injuring his grandson, who was in the front passenger seat. Shemberger was also injured, police said. According to Lake County court records, Shemberger agreed to the terms of a negotiated plea on July 24, pleading guilty to two counts of reckless homicide. In addition to the jail sentence, he was placed on probation for 30 months. He will not be allowed to drive while on probation. He was also ordered to pay more than $2,000 in fines and costs. Navy base death A Navy recruit died Wednesday at Naval Station Great Lakes from a self-inflicted gunshot, the Lake County Coroner's Office said Friday. Authorities were called to the firing range at the base at about 1:45 p.m. and found the 18-year-old recruit with a gunshot wound to the head. The recruit, who was a Florida resident before enlisting, was pronounced dead at the scene. A Navy spokesperson said Thursday that the service is 'providing full support to the family, friends, and shipmates affected by this tragic loss.' Burglary charges A Gurnee man is facing charges after police said he was caught burglarizing a business. Enosh Mekson, 31, has been charged with felony burglary counts and two counts of resisting arrest, Gurnee police said. Authorities said Gurnee officers responded at about 1:15 a.m. on July 31 after being alerted to an alarm at a business in the 5200 block of Grand Avenue. Arriving officers said they saw a man at the scene who tried to flee. He was quickly apprehended. The arrest happened a day after a series of about 15 break-ins were reported at Gurnee-area businesses. However, police said they do not believe Mekson is linked to those burglaries. 'Not a game' North Chicago police said they handed out more than 60 traffic citations during July as part of a campaign to cut down on speeding. The 'Speeding Catches Up to You' campaign took place from July 8 to Aug.1, and was part of a statewide effort involving multiple agencies. During the period, officers cited 39 motorists for speeding, and also issued tickets for other violations like driving with a suspended license or registration and distracted driving. 'We continue to urge all drivers traveling through our community to slow down, obey speed limits and drive responsibly,' the department said in a news release. 'Every decision you make behind the wheel matters – it's truly not a game.' Law & Order column: Police say siblings lied about crash

A brother and sister have been charged with obstruction of justice after authorities said they lied about their involvement in a fatal crash in October. Jordan Ricks, 29, and Asia Ricks, 23, both of Beach Park, were charged after an investigation revealed that they misled police about the accident that killed Daniel Davis, 56, of Beach Park, according to authorities. Davis died on the night of Oct. 18, when he was travelling south on Green Bay Road at what police said was at high speed and ran into a Kia that made a left turn in his path at the Chaplin Drive intersection. The brother and sister told police that Jordan Ricks was driving the Kia at the time and Asia was in the passenger seat, according to reports. However, police now say that Asia Ricks was actually driving, and that Jordan Ricks came to the scene after the collision. 'The investigation revealed the siblings fabricated the story because Asia was likely under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and did not want to be held accountable for her actions,' the Lake County Sheriff's Office said. The pair turned themselves in for processing after they were indicted by a grand jury. They are scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 28. National Night Out A number of police departments across Lake County will be participating in the annual National Night Out event, which takes place on Tuesday. National Night Out is a nationwide campaign aimed at fostering better relationships between communities and their police departments. The events often feature things like cookouts, parades, outdoor and party get-togethers, which give people the chance to meet police in a positive atmosphere and foster community. Grayslake police, in conjunction with its FOP Lodge and the Grayslake Park District, will be participating for the first time. Their event takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Central Park, and will feature food and games. Police and public works vehicles will be on display. Most participating departments have posted information about National Night Out activities on their Facebook pages. Waukegan's Night Out takes place at the Waukegan Municipal Beach on Aug. 8. Teens praised Wauconda police recognized four teens who did the right thing when they happened upon a discarded pistol along a village street. The teens were riding their bikes on July 16 along Illinois Route 176, near the U.S. Route 12 underpass, when they saw a .25-caliber Colt handgun on the sidewalk. Two of the boys remained to keep an eye on the gun while the other two rode to the police department to report their find. Police secured the gun for further investigation. 'The bravery and common sense these young men showed is truly commendable,' Chief David Wermes said. 'They turned a potentially dangerous situation into an example of community responsibility.' As a gesture of thanks, the chief treated the kids to ice cream at Dairy Queen. Anyone with information about the gun is asked to contact the police at (847) 526-2421. Self-defense course Mundelein police will offer a women's self-defense course beginning in September. The five-week session begins Sept. 14 from 6-8 p.m. It ends Oct. 14. The free course will teach awareness and prevention of violent acts, and will give women tools to defend themselves. The course is limited to 24 participants, who must be 18 or older, or 17 with a note from a parent, to participate. 'The goal of this program is to inform, encourage, and empower participants while building fundamental skills to support safety and build confidence in independent ability,' the department said. For registration information, call Jenni House at (847) 968-3770.

Body of missing Ohio man found at West Virginia park

The body of a missing Canton, Ohio, man was found in Mountwood Park in West Virginia over the weekend. In a post on Facebook, the Wood County Sheriff's Office said Chad Polen's body was found in the area of Mountwood Park on Sunday. The 48-year-old man had been missing since June 19. No foul play is suspected, law enforcement said in the Facebook post. The sheriff's office said in a Facebook post from July 1 that Polen's vehicle was found in Mountwood Park's volleyball area. The vehicle, a Blue Honda Accord with an Ohio registration plate, had been abandoned for days. "We would like to thank all the search teams, local volunteer fire agencies, volunteers, and the Natural Resources Police for the hard work and organization that led to his recovery," the Wood County Sheriff's Office said in Sunday's Facebook post. "We want to express our sincere condolences to Mr. Polen's family." The West Virginia Natural Resources Police and search teams from West Virginia and Ohio participated in Sunday's search, authorities said.
