Lifestyle seen returning to profit this year
The directors of Lifestyle Sports expect the business to return to profit in the current year. New accounts filed by Lifestyle Sports (Ireland) Ltd show the retailer's pre-tax losses halved to €1.2 million in the 12 months to the end of September 28th. Revenues at the business dipping slightly from €104.99 million to €104.18 million. Still, in their report, the directors state that the business has recorded revenue growth since the end of last September. READ MORE The company operates the Lifestyle Sports business through 38 bricks and mortar stores and online. In their report, they state that 'the company's profitability continued with increased momentum post year end and for the quarter ended December 31st 2024, which includes the key Black Friday and Christmas trading period, the company reported a €1.2m or 23pc increase in EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortisation). They state that 'this increase in cash profitability was a function of not just continuing cost savings but a welcome return to top line growth with 'like for like' revenue growth of 4.5 per cent'. They further add that they note that 'this growth in revenue was broad based'. The directors note that 'this performance, in what remains a challenging and competitive market, was validation of the company's strategy based on premium omni channel retailing focussed on the stylised athlete, benefitting from exclusive access to some of the most popular sports inspired brands in Ireland'. 'Based on this performance the company is expected to return to profitability in the year ended September 27th 2025'. Lifestyle Sports is owned by the Co Wexford based Stafford Group and reflecting on the 2024 fiscal performance, the directors state that the results for the year 'were encouraging'. The increased cash profitability contributed to a €1.53m reduction in operating losses to €408,000. Exceptional costs of €624,372 relating to store closure costs and restructuring costs contributed to the pre-tax loss of €1.23 million. Numbers employed reduced from 408 to 383 as staff costs declined from €13.5 million to €13.45 million. In a post balance sheet event, the directors reveal that the company participated in the successful re-financing of the Stafford Group with Bank of Ireland, to put in place five year facilities maturing in November 2029. They added that having successfully paid down almost €7 million of bank debt over the preceding 12 months from a combination of asset disposals and tighter working capital management, the Stafford Group refinanced its total banking facilities of €22.7 million through a combination of term loans amounting to €19.2 million and overdraft facilities amounting to €3.5 million.

BWG Foods' profits jump by 30% on back of ‘record-high sales'
Profits at wholesale group BWG Foods , which operates the Spar, and Londis convenience chains in Ireland, rose by more than 30 per cent last year on the back of 'record-high sales'. The latest accounts for the Irish group show it made a profit after tax of €34.7 million for the 12 months to the end of September 2024, up from €26.4 million the previous year. BWG Foods, which is wholly owned by South African-incorporated Spar Group Ltd, operates a number of retail and convenience brands in Ireland, including Mace, Spar, Eurospar, Londis and XL. The company generated a turnover of €1.7 billion in the period, up from €1.6 billion. Its operating profit came to €52 million, up from €42 million. READ MORE Sales increased by 5.6 per cent year on year, the directors said. 'This growth was driven by a combination of higher volumes, inflation and acquisitions,' they said. 'The company achieved record-high sales year-on-year. 'Gross margin as a percentage of sales increased year-on-year to 12.7 per cent, up from 12.4 per cent,' they said. The directors attributed this improvement in gross profit to changes in the category mix. Spar Group first invested in the BWG business in 2014 when it paid €55 million for an 80 per cent stake to help BWG restructure boomtime property debts. Last year BWG Foods announced a €35 million investment in its Mace retail business to support in-store improvements and marketing at the convenience franchise. 'The directors have reviewed the detailed five-year plan prepared by management. The cash flow projection underpins the going concern assessment and confirms that sufficient funding remains in place for a period of at least 12 months from the date of this report,' the latest accounts state.

‘Against my beliefs to carry on' – Snooker legend retires after health battle and issues emotional statement
FINAL RACK 'Against my beliefs to carry on' – Snooker legend retires after health battle and issues emotional statement SNOOKER LEGEND Jan Verhaas has retired from snooker after revealing a two-year-long health battle. The iconic Dutch snooker referee issued an emotional statement confirming his decision. 4 Jan Verhaas has retired from snooker refereeing Credit: PA:Press Association 4 He has been struggling with pain after a motorbike crash Credit: Alamy Verhaas, 58, has been minding the felt for over 35 years for the World Snooker Tour. However, he has struggled over the last 24 months following a motorbike accident. He has admitted to suffering a lot of pain while standing up for a long time, which is required at snooker tournaments. Verhass shared his news with his 30.7k followers on X with a statement. He wrote: "A career spanning over three and a half decades, I have decided to retire from refereeing professional snooker with immediate effect. "This decision has not come easy but there are several reasons as to why. "Over the last couple of years, I have been very busy with other duties i.e. assessing and developing the skills of referees worldwide as well as assisting the Tournament Directors during our events on the WST tour. "In fact, my refereeing duties during the last few seasons were quite minimal, only about 20 per cent of my work still consisted of being a referee. "Furthermore, I had a motorbike accident two years ago which still gives me a lot of physical discomfort, especially when I am standing up for a long time. "During my whole career, I have always set myself the highest standards in all aspects of the job, something that I also expect from other referees in my job as an assessor/coach. Snooker fans baffled as star who's not won a match all year knocks in staggering 147 break "Because of the above-mentioned reasons, I nowadays struggle to maintain full focus and sharpness when I am out there refereeing, and I feel that I cannot give it the full 100 per cent anymore which, in my opinion, is necessary at this level. "I also think it is unfair towards the players and against my beliefs to carry on when I can't always practice what I preach anymore. "Although I will miss the refereeing, I definitely feel that it is the right decision to move on now and fully commit to my other duties on the WST tour. "I want to thank my employer World Snooker Ltd. for all those marvellous opportunities in the past and the continuous support that they are giving me in my new roles as Referees Development Manager and Assistant Tournament Director. 4 Verhaas had been working for the WST for over 35 years Credit: Getty 4 Fans have wished him well in his retirement Credit: PA:Press Association "Of course, I would like to thank all the players whom I have shared the floor with, every single one of you have made my job extremely special. "To all my colleagues, the audiences and snooker fans all over the world, thank you so much for your support and love over all these years. "I will cherish all the memories for the rest of my life!" 'One of the best' Fans have reacted to the news as they flooded the comment section wishing Verhaas well. One posted: "Not just a top referee, but a man of integrity. The game won't be the same without you. Wishing you all the best ahead Jan!" A second commented: "We will be sad to see you go Jan. World snooker has lost another great referee." A third wrote: "One of the best, enjoy your retirement." A fourth said: "Thank you for all the memories legend." Another added: "You are by far and away the best referee snooker has ever had, imo. You'll definitely be missed! Good luck in everything going forwards." Verhaas is not completely walking away from snooker as he will remain involved in a different aspect. He is taking on the role of the WST Referee Development Manager to help younger referees.
