Rly exam ban on religious symbols must be rolled back: Dy CM
Bengaluru, Apr 28 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday demanded the withdrawal of the order prohibiting candidates from wearing religious symbols at railway examination centres, stating that it could create unnecessary anger among the public.
Speaking to reporters here, Shivakumar said, "When it's a religious thing like a 'Mangalsutra' or a 'Janeu' (sacred thread), they can check it if required, but removing them is incorrect. We are clearly saying that any such religious symbols, earrings, mangalsutra, Janeu, or a hip band, they can check it. It is not wrong."
Referring to concerns raised in the past over candidates allegedly using small devices concealed in their ears, Shivakumar said, "In the past, there have been some issues where people kept a small device in their ears. It is not right. But the current order must be taken back."
"I think that anything that creates anger among the people must be removed. I demand that such rules be removed," he added.
The directive, issued by the Railway Recruitment Boards ahead of their examinations, had triggered protests from various quarters, with candidates and religious groups expressing concern over its implications.

Jammu, June 13 (UNI) For deepening academic engagement and enhancing the University's outreach to the youth and communities in far-flung areas of the region, Vice Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai today said that the University of Jammu is poised to create history by convening its Academic Council Meeting—the apex academic decision-making body of the University—for the first time at its Bhaderwah Campus on June 15. Announcing the decision here at a curtain raiser press conference, Prof Rai emphasized that convening the Academic Council meeting outside the main campus reflects the University's evolving approach to inclusivity—by directly connecting with its regional campuses, students, and civil society. He underscored the vital role of offsite campuses in shaping academic vision of the University and integrating them into the mainstream of decision-making. Terming Bhaderwah as the oldest regional campus of the University, Prof. Rai emphasised its strategic role in catering to the academic aspirations of students from remote and hilly areas. Heads of Departments from the main campus, principals of affiliated colleges, academic representatives from other institutions, and senior deans from the University of Kashmir will participate in the meeting. The Council will also deliberate on several academic reforms such as Implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 at the postgraduate level from August 2025, Curriculum restructuring and a new credit framework for experiential learning, Promotion of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programme design In addition to the Council meeting, the University has outlined a comprehensive series of parallel academic and community engagement activities. Prof. Rai informed that six thematic working groups have been constituted to develop policy inputs on critical focus areas including Multidisciplinarity in academics, Internationalization and global outreach, Skilling and entrepreneurship, Industry-academia collaboration, Start-up ecosystems and innovation, Strategic development of offsite campuses. These groups will present policy-oriented papers to help guide the University's long-term academic planning and institutional growth, he added. The Vice Chancellor further stated that such key academic and administrative engagements will also be conducted at other offsite campuses of the University, including Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi, and Poonch, in a phased manner. The aim is to foster stronger institutional linkages across all regional centres and make them active contributors in the University's governance and growth story. Other planned events include cultural programmes and interactions with civil society, aimed at building deeper community linkages and promoting public accountability. As part of this outreach, individuals from the local civil society who have made significant contributions in education, literature, and social development will be felicitated at Bhaderwah. Prof. Rai reiterated the University's responsibility as a publicly funded institution, committed to addressing regional needs through collaborative dialogue and inclusive participation. Another major announcement made by the Vice Chancellor was the University's plan to launch undergraduate programmes at the main campus. Dhaka, June 13 (UNI) Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus and BNP chairman Tarique Rahman have agreed that general elections could take place a week before Ramadan in the second week of February, provided all preparations were completed by then. The preparations include sufficient progress in electoral reforms and the July Uprising trials. The BNP chairman, who met the CA in the Dorchester Hotel in London, reportedly expressed satisfaction with the decision, putting both parties on the same page after the BNP came to loggerheads with the interim government over its decision to hold elections in April next year, which they called unfeasible. The interim government appointed National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman. briefing media about the meeting between Rahman and Yunus, said it was held in a cordial environment. "Tarique Rahman proposed to the chief advisor that the national election be held before next year's Ramadan. The party's chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, also believes that holding the election during that time would be good," Khalilur said, reports Daily Star. "The chief advisor said that he has already announced that the election will be held in the first half of April next year. If all preparations are completed, the election could be organised in the week before Ramadan in 2026. Air India plane crash: Dy CM DK Shivakumar says
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 13 (ANI): In the wake of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it 'one of the biggest tragedies in recent times' and urging the Union Government to take serious cognizance of the matter. Addressing reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said, 'This tragedy is one of the biggest in recent times. We are all worried about the safety of all the passengers. The government of India will have to look at this issue very seriously. It is not a small concern...' He also emphasised the implications of the crash, particularly on the image of India's civil aviation globally. 'The image of the aviation industry, Indian Airlines, has become a huge discussion point in the entire country and the world. Let us see what the government of India comes out with...,' he said. On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. Meanwhile, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that the Flight Data Recorder, commonly known as the black box, was recovered within 28 hours from the Air India plane crash site in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. In a post on X, the minister wrote, 'The Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) has been recovered within 28 hours from the accident site in Ahmedabad by AAIB. This marks an important step forward in the investigation. This will significantly aid the enquiry into the incident.' Earlier in the day, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) confirmed the recovery of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), commonly referred to as the black box, from the rooftop of a building at the site of crash. The Ministry of Civil Aviation clarified that, contrary to circulating reports, a video recorder that had been recovered at the crash site was not the DFDR. The AAIB has launched a full-scale investigation into the crash, with over 40 staff from the Gujarat State Government joining efforts to support the Ministry of Civil Aviation teams on the ground. The black box, a critical piece of evidence, will be analysed to determine the cause of the tragic crash that claimed the lives of all 241 passengers and crew, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. 'Contrary to some reports, the video recorder being circulated is not the DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder). The black box was found on the rooftop. AAIB began work with full force immediately. Over 40 staff from the State Government joined efforts to augment MoCA teams on site. The DFDR has been recovered from the rooftop,' said the statement of the Ministry of Civil Aviation The investigation is underway, and the recovered DFDR is expected to provide vital insights into the events leading up to the disaster. The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours. According to Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls made by ATC. Immediately after departing Runway 23, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, and heavy black smoke began emanating from the accident site. Vishwashkumar Ramesh miraculously survived the Air India plane crash a day ago, in which 241 other passengers died. Kumar, a British national of Indian origin, was seated in row 11, at the left window seat in the flight's economy class section, right behind an emergency exit. There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national on board the crashed plane, airline authorities said. (ANI)
