As flames engulfed the wreckage of Air India flight AI171 near BJ Medical College on June 12, 56-year-old Raju Patel and his crew stepped into the chaos, pulling out victims, and later, scorched belongings that told stories of lives lost too soon.From the debris, as per TOI, they retrieved 70 tolas of gold jewellery (over 800 grams), Rs 80,000 in cash, passports, and a copy of the Bhagavad Git, all handed over to police.'For the first 15 to 20 minutes, we could barely get close. The fire was too intense,' said Patel, a construction businessman who reached the site within five minutes of the crash. 'But once the first fire brigade and 108 ambulances arrived, we jumped in to help.'With no stretchers around, Patel's team used sarees and bedsheets to carry the injured. They stayed on-site until 9 pm, first helping with rescue and then recovering personal effects scattered across the charred field.Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said all items recovered from the site are being documented and will be returned to the next of kin.'I'm just grateful we could do something,' TOI quoted Patel as saying, who was recalling his experience during the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bombings . 'I was just 100 m from the civil hospital when a bomb went off. But the destruction here... the flames... I will never forget this.'(With inputs from TOI)

‘Plastic pollution alarming'
Prayagraj: Harmful effects of plastic and benefits of nano fertilisers that reduce waste and minimise environmental impact were discussed during an event jointly organised by The Times of India (TOI), Indian Farmers Fertilizers Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) and the State Bank of India (SBI) at IFFCO Ghia Nagar, Phulpur, on Monday. The event marked the culmination of environment week celebrations. Senior executive director of IFFCO, Sanjay Kudeshia, graced the event as the chief guest. Kudeshia emphasised the importance of eliminating plastic usage to declare surroundings plastic-free. He highlighted the benefits of nano fertilisers, which reduce waste and minimise environmental impact. Umesh Kumar, senior manager EPC, warned about the dangers of plastic pollution, citing alarming levels of plastic in human bodies and the environment. He advocated for using jute and cloth bags instead. The event featured a skit by local children, promoting environmental awareness and showcasing the benefits of nano fertilisers. Five local farmers shared their experiences with nano fertilisers and were honoured for their contributions. The ceremony concluded with prize distribution to winners of various competitions held during Environment Week. Senior officials, employees, and their families attended the event. tnn

Buildings and water remit cut, PWD has only roadworks now
Panaji: State govt recently carved out a drinking water department (DWD) from the public works department (PWD). Now, the state has issued an order handing the responsibility of the buildings division of the PWD entirely to the principal secretary of the department. With drinking water and buildings sections' functioning fully separated, the PWD has been for the first time left to deal with only roads and bridges. The order was issued this month to refer all files relating to the buildings division directly to the secretary or the principal secretary of the PWD for scrutiny or clearance. It was felt by govt that this will ensure timely and effective execution of maintenance works of govt buildings. The order states that the principal chief engineer of the PWD will now handle files only pertaining to roads (including bridges), besides operating as the department head for all administrative purposes. 'The decision was taken to fast-track the processing of files as maintenance works are urgently needed due to risk during monsoons to govt buildings, many of which are old,' said a source. 'Staffers are worried that allotting them to a different department may affect their prospects for promotion etc, as there is no clarity on these aspects yet,' a source said. 'It can affect staff motivation. They do not know where they stand in the hierarchy after the restructuring.' The source added, 'The DWD and the PWD will bifurcate fully eventually and a separate budget allotment for the DWD has been announced in the budget. However, revenue distribution between the departments also needs to be sorted out.' Officials said that with a budget of over Rs 800 crore for the DWD, it is yet to get a separate budget head for accounting purposes. Also, clarity is needed to be established on administrative rules in tune with general finance rules to avoid chaos, the source said.
