DEC warns of harmful algal blooms, advises public to report them when seen
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) –The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health are reminding New Yorkers to learn about and be aware of harmful algal blooms (also known as HABs) as the warmer months come up. The DEC's New York Harmful Algal Bloom System is now providing New Yorkers the ability to send reports of HABs to the DEC electronically.
The DEC and DOH evaluate HAB reports and once confirmed, reports are posted to the NYHABS page. The page hosts resources such as the online HABs map and reporting system, which features a map of current and archived bloom locations to help keep New Yorkers informed about potential HABs. According to officials with the DEC, cyanobacteria are naturally occurring in the environment, but certain conditions lead to accumulations that become HABs. Blooms are likely triggered by a combination of factors that include excess nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, lots of sunlight, low-water or low-flow conditions, calm water, and warm temperatures. Those at the DEC say HAB occurrence and reporting typically increase throughout the season with the most reports received during the warmest months of August and September. HABs can pose a risk to public health.
'DEC is committed to continuing its nation leading work to address harmful algal blooms in New York's waterbodies and lessen the negative impacts they can pose to water quality,' DEC Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton said. 'We work closely with DOH on these efforts and reporting any sightings through the NYHABS notification system is a key component in our goal to minimize the frequency of HABs and allow for a more effective response in these areas.'
When it comes to HABs, DEC encourages New Yorkers to 'Know it, Avoid it, Report it.'
HABs vary in appearance from scattered green dots in the water to long, linear green streaks, pea soup or spilled green paint, to blue-green or white coloration. People, livestock, and pets should avoid contact with water that is discolored or has algal scums on the surface. Those who suspect a HAB should report it through the NYHABs online reporting form available on DEC's website. Symptoms or health concerns related to HABs should be reported to the DOH.
'As we enter the summer months and people find themselves enjoying New York State's waters, we encourage them to avoid and report any Harmful Algal Blooms as they can cause health effects in both people and pets,' State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. 'The Department will continue our work with local water suppliers, beach operators, and the Department of Environmental Conservation to monitor for Harmful Algal Blooms so that we may protect drinking water and recreational use of our freshwaters.'

DEC Issues Air Quality Alert for Western New York

Biggest fundraising event for Spencerport fire is back
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Tonight, the Spencerport Firemen's Carnival kicks off with the kiddie parade, and it runs until Saturday. This has been an annual tradition since 1927, and it's Spencerport Volunteer Fire's biggest fundraising event of the year. Using funds from the 2022 carnival, they were able to buy the $20,000 LUCAS device. It's a machine that does chest compressions for someone having a heart attack. Spencerport Firemen's Carnival updates security protocols after last year's incidents 'It's really important that the community knows that their dollars are being well spent,' said Aaron Baker, the president of the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen's Association. 'It saves the responders time, it saves them energy because they're not doing compressions themselves —they're using this device to do those compressions for them. Those types of things are critical for us, and the tools that we use to help save lives.' During the 2024 Firemen's Carnival, over 200 people broke out into fights as things were wrapping up, which led to a police response. To avoid that, they have updated security protocols for this year's event, including fencing the perimeter, minors must be accompanied, pets are not allowed, and weapons are banned. Highland Hospital offers trauma care training to non-trauma centers
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — In healthcare, every second matters. Highland Hospital is ensuring non-trauma healthcare providers are equipped with the necessary knowledge in the event they have to treat trauma patients. On Tuesday, News 8's Oran Spitzer attended the Rural Trauma Team Development Course that doctors at Highland Hospital held for providers at non-trauma centers. Michael Vella, the trauma medical director at URMC's Kessler Trauma Center, told News 8 the course aids healthcare teams in treating traumas as quickly and effectively as possible. Trainers also provide input to non-trauma settings where care is given on how to make the facilities more efficient. Fundraiser honors fallen Gates Firefighter Joe Manuse 'We know that the sooner we can get people to definitive care, which really means the sooner we can get patients to the trauma center like Strong Memorial Hospital, the better the outcomes, the lower the mortality, the better the functional outcomes,' Vella said, 'Being able to identify when someone is critically ill and when they need to be transferred and learning to do that efficiently is really the key pieces of the course.' The course also serves as a reminder of important skills for emergency providers, such as Derek Sullivan, an Emergency Department Registered Nurse. Building muscle memory is important when treating patients in urgent situations. 'In those cases, we just kind of have to act fact and we don't have a lot of time to prepare or think about these things and it's not something that we often do so to keep the information fresh in our mind and to keep habits forming is really important,' Sullivan said.
