JOHOR BARU, April 29 — The Johor police crippled five drug packaging and distribution syndicates, with a seizure worth RM9 million throughout the state during a recent five-day operation.
Police also arrested five men, including a Singaporean, in seven raids that involved four districts from April 20 to 24.
The raids, carried out by the Johor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), included vehicle inspections and also checks on rented residences within the Johor Baru South, Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi and Kluang districts.
Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the first and second raids were carried out between 1.30pm and 7.30pm on April 20 at Jalan Abdullah Tahir here, where a 22-year-old male suspect was arrested.
'Police conducted checks on a parked car before a follow-up raid on an apartment unit that was rented by the suspect where investigators found 9,351.06 grammes (g) of ecstasy powder and 62.00g of ketamine.
'The total seizure in this operation, which also involved the suspect's vehicle and cash, was RM1,724,927. The suspect did not have any previous criminal records, but a drug test found him positive for methamphetamine abuse,' he told reporters at the Johor police contingent headquarters here today.
Kumar, who was accompanied by several senior police officers, said the third raid was carried out between 7pm and 11.30pm on the next day (April 21) at a jetty in Batu Pahat.
He said a 36-year-old male suspect was arrested along with the seizure of a four-wheel drive vehicle and 20,712g of syabu.
'The illicit drugs were believed to be destined to neighbouring countries via the jetty, with the total value of the seizure being RM662,784,' he said.
Following that, Kumar said police conducted the fourth operation starting at 9pm on April 23 to 7am the next day in the Kota Tinggi district that led to the arrest of a 36-year-old local male suspect.
He said the 36-year-old suspect was arrested with the seizure of 20,044g of ecstasy powder and 13.99g (50) Eramin 5 psychotropic pills.
'The total drug seizure in the raid was valued at RM3,348,348. The suspect's modus operandi was to use a rental car as a drug storage to avoid detection by the authorities,' he said, adding that the suspect had past criminal records and tested positive for methamphetamine abuse.
For the fifth and sixth raids, Kumar said police arrested a 33-year-old man at 1pm on April 23 after checks on a Proton Wira car and a terrace house owned by the suspect's wife in Taman Mengkibol.
'In the raid, investigators seized 9,909.70g of ecstasy powder, 187.30g of ketamine and 78.30g of Eramin 5 pills valued at RM1,897,505.40.
'The suspect used the same operating method, which was to use the car as a drug storage,' he said.
Kumar said on the same night, police carried out a seventh raid at an apartment unit in Danga Bay here that ended at 3am on April 24.
He said police arrested a 47-year-old Singaporean man who was also in possession of travel documents that belonged to another person.
'Police seized 10,024g of ecstasy powder, 31.30g of ketamine, 44.00g of marijuana,
9.00g of heroin, 6.00g of ecstasy pills and 1.20g of yaba pills with a total value amounting to RM1,687,878.
'The suspect, who is unemployed, is believed to be among one of the syndicate's operators and we believe there are still other members on the run.
He said checks revealed that the particular drug syndicate has been active since January this year.
'The suspect also has a previous drug case in Singapore,' he said.
The suspects in the five cases have been remanded until April 30 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Las Vegas couple ran $2B luxury car scheme, gambled last $10K in poker tournament: police

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A couple told investors they could net billions of dollars by selling luxury cars and boats to overseas buyers who police suspect never existed, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained. The revelations come from a 94-page arrest warrant for Jong Rhee, 45, and Neelufar Rhee, 34 — who Las Vegas Metro police took into custody on May 22. Each faces dozens of charges for allegedly persuading people to invest in the luxury items, saying 'the assets would be resold to overseas buyers at massive profit margins,' police said. However, detectives suspect no buyer ever existed. Jong Rhee allegedly promised investors that he could make money in the scheme to 'acquire high-value, exotic cars.' 'Wealthy clients in Singapore' would then buy the cars, delivering a $2.5 billion profit off of a $57 million investment because of that country's 'import restrictions,' police said. The couple conducted the alleged fraud scheme through two of their businesses: Twisted Twins Motorsports and Lusso Auto Spa, police said. State business records indicate that the Rhees are associated with businesses in Las Vegas and Henderson. Metro detectives suspect the couple netted $57 million 'for purchasing seven high-value motor vehicles by materially fraudulent misrepresentation,' documents said. In all, detectives list dozens of high-end and exotic cars and boats as part of the investigation, including models from Bugatti, Porsche and Rolls-Royce. One investor was allegedly promised a hefty return on an investment from the overseas purchases, documents said. Records show Jong Rhee 'never contacted anyone to sell [the vehicles in question] for $2 billion,' documents said. In one case involving a 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre, Jong Rhee said he could receive $7.5 million for the vehicle with a value of $526,000, documents said. Another involving a $3.9 million boat involved a $13.5 million Singaporean purchase. Last July, Jong Rhee reportedly paid $60,000 for he and his wife to fly in a private plane to Missouri to go boating, documents said. The boat the pair and their friends rode on that weekend was supposed to be sold to 'Jong's overseas connection,' police said. Police also said the Rhees attempted to buy a bar and a home in Lake Havasu, Arizona, and traveled with an investor's money to California. In October, a judge signed off on a warrant to search the couple's $2 million Henderson home and businesses. As part of that search, police seized dozens of high-end cars. Detectives also obtained text messages between the couple, which they said made it 'evident that Jong and Neelufar were under intense pressure due to mounting debts, delayed payments, and unreliable business partners,' documents said. An April 2024 text from Jong Rhee involving outstanding payments on debts read: 'We r [sic] big trouble money,' according to police. Another text from Jong Rhee read, 'Right now, our lives are on the line.' The couple became 'so desperate for money' in 2024 that Jong Rhee bet their last $10,000 to gamble in the World Series of Poker, police said. 'Jong frequently gambled and played poker, especially when he and Neelufar struggled financially,' police said. 'He participated in tournaments similar to the World Series of Poker, which required significant buy-in amounts. Jong would often spend several days playing poker, further contributing to their financial distress. On July 8, 2024, while at a poker event, Jong told Neelufar, 'I don't think I've lost 99% 4 [sic] times in [my] whole life now 4 [sic] times in one month.' He believed that a big win would solve all of their money issues.' Both Rhees face 78 felony charges, including racketeering, money laundering, and forgery, records said. Based on redactions in court documents, it was not clear how many alleged victims were involved in the case. Both posted $100,000 bail, records said. They were not scheduled to return to court until June 9. Two other people, Crisfin Deguzman and John Baudhuin, also face charges connected to the case, records said. Jail, caning for Singapore man who extorted girl, 16, after she withdrew from ‘sugar daddy' deal

SINGAPORE, June 2 — A man who extorted a 16-year-old girl by falsely claiming he was taking legal action against her after she backed out of a 'sugar daddy' arrangement was sentenced to jail and caning on Monday. Marc Justine Landrio Chandramohan, 27, was handed a jail term of two years, 11 months and 10 weeks, and three strokes of the cane, according to a report published in Channel News Asia today. He will begin serving his sentence on Friday after being granted a few days to settle his debts. The Singaporean had earlier pleaded guilty to seven charges, including communicating with a minor to obtain commercial sex, abetting the distribution of obscene images and videos, extortion, cheating, making obscene films, and abetting unauthorised access to a computer function. Another nine charges — mostly linked to making obscene films — were taken into consideration for sentencing by Principal District Judge Victor Yeo Khee Eng. Three victims were involved in the case, including the girl who was extorted. Two others were filmed by Chandramohan during sex acts. Their identities are protected by a gag order. Judge Yeo noted Chandramohan's 'premeditated and predatory behaviour', saying he preyed on a young and naive victim and continued to pressure her for sex and money even though she owed him 'absolutely nothing'. The victim's relationship with her family was affected, and she reported feeling that her body was 'dirty', becoming sensitive to physical touch and panicking when she saw someone who resembled Chandramohan. Yeo said deterrence was the predominant sentencing consideration, both for the accused and for would-be offenders. He acknowledged Chandramohan's remorse and readiness to face punishment. The court previously heard that Chandramohan began chatting with the victim on Instagram in July 2021, proposing to pay her S$900 (RM2,980) for sexual favours. She initially agreed and sent him four nude or semi-nude photos and a video of herself removing her school uniform at his instruction. Chandramohan transferred S$100 to her on July 24, 2021. The victim later regretted the arrangement, told him she wanted to back out, and blocked him on social media. He then began harassing her over the money, using new Instagram accounts to contact her and threatening legal action. Despite a friend repaying the S$100 on her behalf, Chandramohan continued demanding sexual favours. In early 2022, the girl gave in and performed a sex act. Chandramohan then pretended legal proceedings were still ongoing and demanded S$1,350 — allegedly half of his lawyer's fee. He also suggested resuming the original sexual arrangement. The victim later confided in friends, who warned her he was likely lying. She lodged a police report. In a separate offence in 2023, Chandramohan opened a Standard Chartered bank account and handed control of it to a friend in exchange for S$330. Over S$304,000 flowed through the account. He was fined S$330 over this offence. Extortion carries a sentence of two to seven years in jail and caning. Communicating with a minor to obtain sexual services carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both.

Johor police to tighten security, manage traffic for PKR congress this week

JOHOR BARU, May 20 — Johor police will implement precautionary safety and security measures to ensure the smooth running of the PKR National Congress 2025, set to take place in the city this week, said state police chief Datuk M. Kumar. He said the three-day event, beginning this Thursday, will be held at four venues: Johor Persada International Convention Centre, Berjaya Waterfront Hotel, Danga Bay Convention Centre, and Toppen shopping centre. 'We have deployed additional police personnel to all four locations where the congress activities will be held from Thursday to Saturday. 'However, traffic congestion is expected as about 10,000 attendees, including party members, delegates, and guests, are anticipated,' he said at a blood donation drive held in conjunction with the 218th Police Day Celebrations at the Johor police contingent headquarters today. Kumar assured that police do not anticipate any major issues during the congress. He urged all attendees to adhere to the organisers' rules and guidelines to ensure the event proceeds smoothly. 'No matter the programme, the public must comply with the law. As long as the law is followed, there should be no problems,' he said. On potential traffic congestion as the congress coincides with the weekend, Kumar said the police are prepared to manage the situation. He added that no road closures will be implemented in the city during the event. The PKR National Congress was initially scheduled for December 14 and 15 last year but was postponed due to severe flooding in several states, including Johor.
