Fmr. Chairman Of Iran's Broadcasting Authority Mohammad Sarafraz: We Can Choose War – And Eventually Nuke Israel – Or We Can Conduct Negotiations With The U.S., But Both Options Are Bad; Instead, We S

Iranian official Mohammad Sarafraz, member of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace and former IRIB (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) chairman, said in an August 18, 2025 interview with Entekhab on YouTube that if Iran follows the path of war, it would not end well and could lead to a world war. He said that in the worst case, Iran might use a nuclear weapon, try to annihilate Israel, attack U.S. bases in the region, threaten European countries, and attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz. In contrast, he argued, If Iran had conducted negotiations earlier, when its proxies were not so weakened and the internal crisis had not reached such dire levels, such as the collapse of its water and electricity systems, it could have negotiated on more equal terms with the United States. He added that Iran could even have scored points on the nuclear issue, whereas today negotiations with the U.S. would not be on equal terms. Sarafraz called for deep, fast, and fundamental reforms in Iran, saying Iranian society is like a body afflicted with cancer that cannot be treated with painkillers. It is worth noting that following his resignation as IRIB chairman, Sarafraz alleged that IRGC intelligence and even members of Supreme Leader Khamenei's family had intervened in the broadcaster's financial and organizational affairs. Mohammad Sarafraz: "One scenario is to turn to the path of war, to welcome war, like some movements in our country are trying to promote. The outcome will be an endless war whose outcome is unknown. This scenario will probably lead to a world war. "In the worst case scenario, Iran might use a nuclear weapon, and will try to advance its endeavor to annihilate Israel. In addition, Iran will try to attack U.S. military bases in the region, to make security threats against European countries, and to somehow shut down the Strait of Hormuz. [...] "Ultimately, and considering the accumulation of problems we are facing, I don't think this will end well at all. [...] "Another scenario is to conduct negotiations with America. If we had done this in the past, we could have benefited greatly: The pro-Iran [proxy] groups would not have taken a hit – Hizbullah in Lebanon, the Iraqis, the Yemenis, and the Palestinian groups, including Hamas, would not have reached such a pathetic state. "Iran's status and power in the region would have been much higher, and we would not have suffered domestic problems in the water and electricity systems, like we do now. Had we conducted negotiations, we could have won points in the nuclear and other issues. Now, however, negotiations with the U.S. would not be on equal terms at all. We would negotiate with someone who wants to impose his positions and will on Iran. [...] "The third path – the one which I claim our country needs to take – is one of introspection. I call it, in a nutshell, a revolution in the ruling system. In other words, there should be deep, fast, and fundamental reforms in this country. These include a reform in the constitution, a reform in our approach to things, and even a reform in the goals to which we have dragged our country. Consequently, there should be a reform in the management of the country. All of these need to happen. [...] "Our society is currently like a sick man, or like a body afflicted with cancer. This problem cannot be resolved with painkillers."

Trump flirts with Ukraine security, with narrow margins

Washington – Donald Trump's newfound if vague willingness to entertain security guarantees for Ukraine could be a game-changer, but the US president's right-wing base is already warning him not to go too far. After a campaign last year spent bashing predecessor Joe Biden over billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, and Trump's public upbraiding of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in February, Trump has considered promises to Kyiv to end the Russian invasion. He has ruled out ground troops as well as NATO membership, siding with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in blaming Ukraine's aspirations for the Western alliance for the February 2022 invasion. But after Trump welcomed Putin to Alaska on Friday, Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff said the Russian president had agreed to a 'concession' of the United States offering 'Article Five-like protection' for Ukraine, referring to NATO's binding promise that an attack on one is an attack on all. Some observers doubted Witkoff's understanding of Putin, noting that Moscow publicly has insisted on guarantees for Russia. But Trump has said 'we'll give them very good protection' and has spoken of providing US airpower to enforce any agreement. Little is known about what US airpower would entail, but it could support a deployment of European troops to Ukraine mulled by France and Britain. If the United States agreed to enforce control of the Ukrainian skies, it would be an 'incredible green light for greater ambition' by Europeans on security, said Kristine Berzina, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund. European leaders showed striking unity and solidarity by coming together to Washington on Monday to back Zelensky in talks with Trump, she said. 'For there to be a meaningful difference on the ground in Ukraine, it can't just be diplomatic alignment. It can't just be the heads of state being in lockstep for a few days at a time,' she said. 'Instead, they have to be ready to actually move and to show to Trump, 'We have everything ready; we just need x from you to make this work.'' – Vagueness on options – Trump, however, could also authorize a much smaller air deployment, such as one focused on reconnaissance that would see limited numbers of US planes in the Ukrainian skies. 'President Trump said some things in his meetings with the European leaders and Zelensky and I am betting a huge sum of money that there are people around Trump who are going to spend a lot of time walking that back,' said Debra Cagan, a former senior US policymaker now at the Atlantic Council. 'What I mean by that is that they're going to try a very de minimis approach to security guarantees, to do as little as possible to carry that out,' she said. She said that any successful strategy needed to have components on land and air as well as sea, including keeping the crucial Black Sea ports open for Ukraine. – Pushback from base – Trump retains a strong hold on the Republican Party, but has already seen some dissent within his hard-right base, which backed him in part for his dismissive attitude to foreign involvement. Outspoken Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who earlier criticized Trump for bombing Iran, said she believed voters would be 'appalled' by more support for Ukraine as they struggle with day-to-day concerns. 'America is broke,' she told conservative host Megyn Kelly. 'At some point we have to start saying no to the rest of the world.' Trump-aligned Senator Tommy Tuberville said it would be an 'impossible sell' to voters still shaken by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to start another long-term US military commitment, according to The Hill newspaper. Trump, however, has tried hard to portray the war as belonging to Biden and has spoken openly of his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize. 'He could probably sell to his base that this is about America keeping peace and not about America making war,' Berzina said.

US Senator warns: Iraq partition plan resurfaces in Syria

Shafaq News – Wahington / Damascus A territorial partition plan once proposed for Iraq is now being revived in Syria, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson warned on Wednesday. Describing the renewed push as a dangerous and divisive move, Wilson stated on X that former US President Joe Biden, during his time as a senator, proposed a plan two decades ago to divide Iraq into three separate states. According to Wilson, the idea was rejected at the time due to concerns that it would spark three separate wars, expand Iranian influence, and create space for al-Qaeda to grow. He added that the same proposal is now resurfacing with regard to Syria, calling it 'a reckless scheme' that would lead to widespread instability affecting neighboring countries including Turkiye, Jordan, Iraq, and Israel. Wilson emphasized that the only viable path forward is a unified and stable Syria that includes all its citizens and ensures peace both internally and regionally. When then Senator Joe Biden proposed his plan to divide Iraq into three countries two decades ago I opposed it because it would have only caused three separate wars, empowered Iran, and given an opportunity to al-Qaeda. Today the same ridiculous idea is being proposed for Syria… — Joe Wilson (@RepJoeWilson) August 20, 2025 Earlier, Syrian Transitional President Ahmad Al-Sharaa reaffirmed his government's commitment to the country's territorial integrity, dismissing partition scenarios as highly unlikely and lacking the necessary conditions for implementation.
