Max Verstappen confirms Red Bull stay for 2026

RTÉ News5 days ago
Max Verstappen has confirmed for the first time that he will stay with Red Bull - after George Russell admitted he is on the brink of a new Mercedes contract.
Verstappen's break clause from his Red Bull deal can no longer be activated, after his fourth-placed finish in Belgium last Sunday ensured he will not be lower than third in the world championship at the summer break which follows this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.
Asked at the Hungaroring if he can say for certain that he will be at Red Bull in 2026, Verstappen replied: "Yes. I never really said anything about it because I was just focused on talking to the team about improving our performance, future ideas and next year and that is why I had nothing really to add.
"But I think it is time to stop all the rumours. For me, it was always quite clear that I was staying anyway and that was the general feeling in the team because we were always in discussion about what we could do with the car and when you're not interested in staying, you stop talking about these kind of things, and I never did."
Mercedes have made little secret of their desire to sign the four-time world champion. As it stands, Russell - who despite a series of impressive performances this year - is without a deal for 2026.
Speaking prior to Verstappen, Russell, who it is understood has received a contract offer from Mercedes in the past week, said: "Conversations have started. We are now heading into the summer break.
"I have spoken a lot with (Mercedes CEO and team principal) Toto (Wolff) this week, but we have not spoken once about the contract because we are both trying to solve the performance and getting the team in the right place. And that is genuine.
"I want to go into the summer break and enjoy the only two weeks off I have in the year. I don't want to be thinking about contracts.
"And there isn't really a major time pressure now from my side, nor from Mercedes' side, because of the Verstappen situation and I presume he is staying at Red Bull.
"Not that I was ever concerned about that but from the team's perspective I guess that has an impact.
"From my side, I was never concerned I was going to lose my seat. I want to go into this weekend and try and get the team back on track and perform better than we have shown at the past six races. Then I am going to go straight on holiday for two weeks and do a week's training and I want to enjoy that to be honest."
It was then put to Russell, 27, that he will be driving for Mercedes next season, but it is now just a question of how his contract looks. He replied: "Yes, I guess so."
Despite the continued speculation surrounding suggestions Verstappen could trade Red Bull for Mercedes, those close to the Russell camp have indicated for a number of weeks the 27-year-old is extremely confident of striking a contract extension.
Russell has scored 157 points to rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli's 63 after 13 of the 24 rounds. Mercedes are third in the constructors' standings, 296 points adrift of McLaren.

Ferrari boss: Lewis Hamilton is 'frustrated but not demotivated'

Despite Lewis Hamilton's recent comments referring to himself as "absolutely useless", Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur defended the seven-time World Champion, saying he is "frustrated but not demotivated." On Saturday during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton failed to make it past Q2 in Qualifying at the Hungaroring, where he had eight previous victories. Speaking to reporters afterwards, Hamilton was asked to reflect on his session and said, "I'm useless, absolutely useless," and suggesting Ferrari "probably need to change driver". However, Vasseur chalked Hamilton's comments up to frustration that is common among athletes when they're struggling, especially immediately after a tough performance. "Sometimes just after the race, or just after the Quali, you are very disappointed and the reaction, the first reaction is harsh but we all know that we are pushing in the same direction," Vasseur said. "I can perfectly understand the situation and you can, sometimes you are making comments on what the driver is saying to the car, but if you put the microphone on some other sportsman in football and so on, I'm not sure that it would be much better. Hamilton ultimately finished Sunday's race in 12th place, marking the first time he's finished outside the points at the Hungarian racetrack. After signing a multi-year deal reportedly worth $100 million per year, Hamilton has struggled throughout his first season with Ferrari. He has yet to reach a podium with Ferrari and stands sixth in the drivers' standings with 109 points.

Grand National-winning trainer makes big announcement with jockey's son

Scotland's most triumphant jumps stable is set to see a new name adorning its front door, as Grand National-winning trainer Lucinda Russell has announced an exciting training partnership. Russell is among the select few active trainers who have twice claimed victory in the Grand National, with wins from One For Arthur in 2017 and Corach Rambler in 2023. Since obtaining her licence in 1995, she has led over 1,000 winners, including a significant triumph in the 2021 Scottish Grand National with Mighty Thunder and securing her fourth Cheltenham Festival success with Myretown in the Ultima Handicap Chase this past March. Russell has achieved the top honours in tandem with her partner Peter Scudamore, the eight-time champion jumps jockey, and for the last two seasons Peter's son Michael has worked as assistant trainer. Michael Scudamore moved to Scotland after training on his own for 16 years during which he won the 2013 Welsh Grand National with Monbeg Dude, co-owned by former England rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, and enjoyed Cheltenham Festival success with Next Sensation in the 2015 Grand Annual Chase. "The long-term plan has always been for Michael and myself to become joint trainers and it represents an exciting development for the stable as we look forward to the 2025/26 jumps season," said Russell. ''In his two years as assistant trainer Michael has been able to embed himself into his role within the team and fully acquaint himself with our training methods which utilise the outstanding natural resources of the Perthshire countryside. ''Apart from the names on the licence, nothing will change but the effects of having Michael on board in a leadership role are already evident. ''The size of our stable has increased by 20 per cent since he arrived in Scotland. We have built more stables and will have around 160 horses in training by the time the jumps season fully kicks into gear. ''Being able to share responsibility for the operational running of the stable has also allowed me to concentrate more time on arguably the most important part of training, sourcing new horses. That has seen the quality of horses we are able to train continue to improve thanks to the support of our owners.'' Michael said: ''I am really excited to be joining Lucinda as joint trainer. The Russell stable has been one of the most successful in the country over the last two years and this move reflects our ambitions to reach even greater heights. ''Any trainer will tell you that when you move into a new stable it takes time to get used to the gallops and the environment around you. ''The last two years have been a great learning experience. I now feel I am fully integrated into a very experienced team in which everyone knows their roles. We have had some great results and everyone is eager to further build on that success.''
