‘Melbourne wine bar' has become its own genre, but this decade-old spot breaks the mould

It's a pleasure to be here, sitting at the bar, or in the backroom, or along the window facing Johnston Street, the hurriedly spray-painted and never updated Bar Liberty sign glowing like an endorsement of all the decisions that brought you to this moment.
Is it soul? Bar Liberty makes me think of great footy clubs, immortalising heroes on imaginary honour rolls, handing over traditions implicitly and explicitly. Spirit is steeped in everything from the timber to the playlists to the flavours and, of course, the customers who bring their own romance and energy, resulting in a sprightly institution full of meaning and delight.
Three more Fitzroy spots to try
El Columpio
The tacos are outstanding (I'm a huge fan of the cactus and mushroom ones especially), but when you're wondering how to stay warm in winter, consider the pozole, a Mexican soup with white corn, chicken or pork, and fresh crunchy garnishes. It's wholesome and sustaining any time of day.

Crop
Frankie Cox's Green-on has rebranded to Crop and expanded from Cremorne to Fitzroy. The build-your-own salad concept has carried over, and I love the Winter Miso option with sweet potato, red cabbage, green beans, seaweed crunch, rocket, barley and miso-ginger dressing – a lunch that will easily carry you through to dinner.

Maven by Morgan
When Morgan Hipworth was a teen, he launched doughnut brand Bistro Morgan. Now all grown up, he's opened Maven, a modern Mediterranean restaurant that serves signature cocktails (such as the Split Decision with banana-infused rum and roasted peanut sherry). There are separate menus for vegans, halal diners, and anyone avoiding garlic and onion.

'Summer memories': Nicole Kidman shares happy snaps with daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret in Europe, while son Connor Cruise is spotted partying in Florida

Nicole Kidman is famed for her tireless work ethic, but the Oscar-winning actress has pressed pause on her busy schedule to soak up the European summer with her youngest daughters. The 58-year-old Hollywood star took to Instagram on Wednesday to post rare family snaps from her getaway with Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. "Summer memories. Now back to school," Kidman captioned the post, which featured videos and pictures of the family enjoying the sunshine alongside her sister Antonia and niece Lucia Hawley. While husband Keith Urban was absent from the photo roll, Kidman shared a series of smiling selfies with her daughters. One image included a birthday cake for Sunday Rose, who turned 17 on July 7. The teenager, who recently graced the cover of Nylon Magazine, also shared her own summer throwbacks on Instagram. "School's back, so time to reminisce the vacay," she wrote, alongside photos of her birthday cake, a Mediterranean lunch, a 'Ciao' cap and a copy of Stephen King's Misery. Despite her burgeoning modelling career, Sunday Rose recently revealed her famous Aussie parents have set strict rules around her education. During her interview with Nylon, Sunday revealed said there were "two big rules" before she could step into fashion: no work until she was 16, and that "school always has to come first". Although she admitted she "hated" those restrictions at first, she now credits them with keeping her grounded. "So at my first show, while I was walking, I was actually just thinking about the amount of schoolwork I was going to have to make up!" she confessed. The teen added that life in Nashville, Tennessee, allows her and her sister to fly under the radar despite having famous parents. "When people my age meet me, they normally don't know anything about my life, which is sort of wonderful because I am able to make a first impression based on who I am and not who my family is," she said. Meanwhile, Kidman's older children with her first husband, Tom Cruise, live very different lives. The former couple adopted Isabella 'Bella', now 32, and Connor, 30, during their marriage in the '90s. While Bella is an artist based in London, Connor works as a DJ and lives in Clearwater, Florida, near his father and the Church of Scientology's headquarters. Both are said to be estranged from their mother, though neither has publicly addressed the rift. While Nicole and her daughters were abroad, Connor appeared to be making the most of the Florida heat. On August 5, he was tagged in a social media post aboard a pirate ship with friends, grinning in photos captioned: "Highly contagious pirate energy."

Food Bites: the new-look Mad Poet, a birria taco cafe opens

Mad Poet on Newcastle's Hunter Street has a new look and a new menu. Red velvet drapes, hanging plants, classic cocktails, a vinyl turntable on the bar ... owner Dylan Oakes has been busy. Mad Poet, which opened early in 2024 as a "listening bar", has been relaunched as a New York dive bar. It's a bit quirky, a bit grungey, and open to all. "We've made it more accessible. We're becoming more of a before-and-after venue for gigs at the Civic and NEX," Dylan said. "There's more of a party vibe at the venue. We're playing sports and retro concerts on the TV, we've got a projector, we're serving hot dogs, nachos and tacos until midnight. "It's been much busier, the reception has been great. It's more of a small party venue now, rather than the high-end venue I was doing." What music is played depends on the crowd on any given night. Dylan has 3000 or so vinyl records to choose from. "We're adapting to how our Midtown precinct is evolving, and how the late-night economy is taking shape, which is why we're serving food until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and have a DJ spinning on the bar on those nights," Dylan said. "We've got a few things in the pipeline, a few parties planned, and we hope to offer alfresco dining on the footpath come summer." And if you're an NSW nurse, head to Mad Poet for a drink and a feed. You get a 10 per cent discount. Mad Poet is open Thursday to Saturday, 5pm to 1am, at 537 Hunter Street, Newcastle West. Birria tacos are on the menu at the newly opened Liam's Coffee and Tacos at Glendale City Centre. For those not in the know, birria tacos are made with goat and/or beef meat that is slow-cooked in a flavoursome Mexican broth (or consomme), shredded, and served in a taco shell with chopped onions, coriander and a wedge of lime. It's a popular dish in Sharleen Slater's household ... so much so that she decided to open a cafe. "I decided to make the tacos in a cafe because I was making them at home but I could not buy them anywhere in Newcastle - also, I am vegetarian and there is no way I could find that option here in Newcastle either," Sharleen, who moved to Newcastle from Taree in 2019, said. "So I decided, after some encouragement, to open the cafe." Liam's Coffee and Tacos has a simple, modern aesthetic and is located next to the children's playground at Glendale City Centre. There were several parents with prams dining in when I visited. You can order a children's nachos meal, flavoured milk, babycinos and juices. Sharleen says the corn cups, cheese quesadillas and the mac and cheese are also popular with kids. "We use a mix of beef and goat meat in our birria, the tortilla is a corn tortilla and it is dipped in the consomme, then grilled with the meat added, and folded in half," Sharleen said. "Some people are sceptical to try the tacos because they contain goat. We have an add-on section in our menu and we try to encourage customers to try the birria meat on the dish they are most comfortable with, whether it's tacos or fries. "We also have a birria ramen, and the option of choosing plant-based Impossible Foods meat. "For breakfast we have avocado toast, eggs on toast with hollandaise sauce, breakfast tacos and breakfast burritos. We serve Darks Coffee and an organic matcha imported from Japan. The iced matcha latte is very popular." Sharleen also makes a range of sweet treats on site, the most popular being the carrot cake. "It gets rave reviews and it's hard to keep in stock. Banana bread, mini cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies are also very popular choices," she said. Regular cafe items such as toasties are also available. And the name? Liam's is named after Sharleen's brother, Liam, who tragically died in 2020 at the age of 14 as a result of an accident. Pop in to Liam's Coffee and Tacos when you are next shopping at Glendale. The menu is budget-friendly and flavoursome, and it's great to see a local having a go. You can dine in at Liam's, order online at for pick-up, or order via Uber Eats. It's open until 9pm on Thursdays, and for breakfast and lunch daily from 9am to 4pm (10am to 4pm on Sundays). Newcastle's Thermidor Brasserie got a mention on Channel 9's Tipping Point last week. A contestant, Emily, was asked the question: "a classic French seafood dish is .... lobster humidor, lobster thermidor or lobster toreador?" Emily told host Todd Woodbridge that there was a "seafood restaurant in Newcastle called Thermidor and they specialise in shellfish". She chose "thermidor" and was correct. Todd said the restaurant owed Emily a free dinner - and Thermidor Brasserie's owners Josh and Jess Gregory are only too happy to oblige. Emily, have you claimed your dinner yet? Also, readers, have you tried Thermidor Brasserie's Sunday brunch menu yet? Oyster Bloody Marys, Creme Brulee Pancake, Slipper Lobster Benedict, Fraser Isle Spanner Crab Omelette, Tea & Tonic, a Recovery Margarita, mimosas ... the list goes on. If not, why not? Battle of the F1 superyachts: Big dogs flaunt their wealth, including a $384m ‘floating mansion'

Nothing screams luxury like a top-notch yacht, so it's no wonder Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has been hosting Max Verstappen on his boat in a bid to woo the popular driver away from Red Bull. The Formula One World Champion, 27, has been spotted sunning himself topless on the vessel just off the coast of Sardinia. In photos that emerged last week, he was seen enjoying the heat as he laughed with Toto, 53, who was dressed all in white. The luxurious yacht, named Mangusta 165, is believed to have cost the racing boss £20million ($41.6M) and spends most of the time moored in Monaco when not in use. F1 is currently on its summer break, with the next race not until August 31 in Zandvoort. 🚨 | Max Verstappen & Toto Wolff seen together on a boat! #Verstappen #Mercedes ðŸ'¸ AutoSprint — North Pole F1 🇨🇦 (@NorthPoleF1) August 13, 2025 Max's break with the Mercedes boss has refuelled rumours that he might move to the team when his contract with Red Bull is up. The four-time world champion told RacingNews365: 'I'm in the middle. Maybe it'll be good, maybe it'll be bad – we'll see. 'I'm very open-minded, honestly. I don't even think about it too much – I'm just enjoying the moment. 'When I sit in the car next year, we'll figure it out. I'm not making the rules anyway.' Toto has owned his yacht, which is 50m in length and has a top speed of 25 knots, since 2023. It boasts five bedrooms and can host 12 guests, who can also enjoy use of the jet skis and a hot tub. The Mercedes boss isn't the only F1 star to own a fancy yacht. Here we look at battle of the boats. MAX VERSTAPPEN He might have spent the beginning of his summer break on Toto's yacht, but the F1 driver has his own boat – which has been described as a 'Bond villain's weekend getaway'. He owns £33million yacht Unleash the Lion, which is thought to be worth £11million. It can hold up to 12 guests alongside five crew, meaning Max and partner Kelly Piquet have ample space for entertaining as well as room for their daughter, Lily, born in May. It has an open deck to the rear which is fitted with white couches and is thought to have an area to store a speed boat. He also has a large stateroom inside, but little else is known about the pricey vessel's interior. Max moored the yacht in Monaco this year when he was competing in the principality's Grand Prix but he hasn't posted photos since its purchase earlier this year. GEORGE RUSSELL British F1 ace George, 27, is the latest driver to join the yacht owner's club with his Pershing 6X. He splashed out £2.2million on the luxurious vessel following his success on the track. The boat might be smaller than grid rival Max's, but it's not tiny either. It has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a kitchen and a spacious upper deck living area. And he's been showing the yacht off on his social media with girlfriend Carmen Mundt, 26, and a host of friends on board. They also have a stash of pricey water toys and the racer has posted videos of him and others on a hydrofoil skimming across the sea. Like rival Max, George is also spending his summer break from the circuit on the boat off the coast of Sardinia. FERNANDO ALONSO Spanish driver Fernando, 44, has owned a Sunreef Power Eco 60 since 2023 after signing an order for it back in 2021. Each yacht from the brand is a bespoke creation for the buyer. The 18.3m long vessel is solar-powered, giving the boat eco-friendly credentials that most yachts don't have. 'I think [Sunreef] is the only company that takes sustainability to a very serious level,' said Alonso during an interview with BOAT International. 'To have a fully electric catamaran powered by solar panels made perfect sense to me.' The solar panels cover 68.6m squared across the yacht, including the roof and hull sides. It's equipped with two 360kw electric motors and a set of 990kwh batteries which are solar powered – making the yacht essentially silent when moving. One of the smaller yachts owned by an F1 star, it can accommodate up to six guests and four crew. But, for Fernando, size doesn't matter. Alonso said: 'On board, all that matters is peace of mind, fresh air, and good company. Yachting should not be about ego. 'For me, it's about sharing good moments and being respectful towards the environment.' LAWRENCE STROLL Billionaire Lawrence, 65, has splashed some of his enormous fortune on a 262-foot long floating mansion for a cool £184.5million ($384m). The Aston Martin F1 team owner downsized from his original yacht, Faith, to Project 714 in March – and has now also renamed it Faith. The upper decks, enclosed in glass, contain a swimming pool, a games deck and a helicopter landing pad with a hangar below, according to Luxury Launches. Inside, there are seven guest cabins which can hold up to 14 people as well as space for 20 crew members. It's thought the large vessel, which has a top speed of 17knots, has annual running costs of up to £20million. Lawrence's previous boat could host up to 18 people across nine cabins and had a crew of 34. It also boasted a private cinema, nine-meter swimming pool plus a spa and plunge pool. He sold it to business tycoon Michael Latifi when he decided to downsize to a slightly smaller vessel. LEWIS HAMILTON British driver Lewis, 40, is also a member of the F1 yacht club with Sunseeker 90, which he is thought to have bought in 2009 for around £2.9million. And when he's not feeling like being on his own boat, he charters other vessels that boast a bigger range of rooms and activities. Sunseeker 90 is 91.9feet and can sleep up to eight guests. It boasts a top speed of 30 knots meaning it's a speedy boat. The yacht is normally moored in Monaco, where Lewis resides during the off season. It features American walnut carpentry, air-conditioning, a huge kitchen and an entertainment area with a shower where guests can rinse off after a dip in the sea. He was seen entertaining model Bella Hadid, 28, on a yacht back in 2017, but it's not clear if he used his own boat or rented one for entertaining. Lewis has also been spotted entertaining pals over the years, including former teammate Nico Rosberg and his own family. CHARLES LECLERC Ferrari driver Charles, 27, appears to be a big fan of spending time on both his yachts – because who would have one when you could have two? He owns a Riva 66 Ribelle named Sedici, which is Italian for sixteen – his race number – and a Riva Dolceriva open cruiser. Sedici is a 20m sports yacht that can reach speeds of up to 37 knots and has three cabins inside. He brought it to the Monaco Grand Prix this year, like many of his fellow drivers. It seems to be his favourite of the two boats, as he often shares snaps from holidays on it, many with it in the background while he swims. His second vessel is named Monza after the world-famous racing circuit – and is a speedy boat.
