MACC nears completion of forensic report on alleged Sabah corruption scandal

The Sun22-04-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The forensic analysis report on 10 new video recordings linked to an alleged corruption scandal involving several Sabah state assemblymen over mineral mining licensing is expected to be completed soon.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said a detailed analysis was currently being conducted on all 10 video recordings.
'I expect the report to be ready soon as the forensic team is carrying out a thorough examination of all 10 recordings,' he said at a press conference after attending the 11th Certified Integrity Officers Convocation 2025 at Dewan Tun Dr Ismail, World Trade Centre (WTC) here today.
He said eight individuals had so far been called to give their statements, including a new case involving allegations linking the Speaker of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya.
Azam had earlier stated that MACC's forensic lab was analysing the 10 latest videos related to the case and he had instructed that the analysis be expedited.
He said analysis of eight earlier videos revealed elements of enhancement, editing and other alterations, rendering them lacking in credibility as evidence and therefore inadmissible in court.
According to Azam, the 10 new videos are longer in duration but must be reviewed for signs of editing, frame breaks, doctoring, and superimposition, with attention also paid to the accompanying audio.
Last year, a news portal reported on several video recordings allegedly showing state assemblymen receiving hundreds of thousands of ringgit in exchange for supporting a company's project application in a state.
On the progress of Op Sky, which involves a corruption and money laundering syndicate linked to bank officers and financial consultancy firms, Azam said the investigation papers would be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor next week.
'The investigation papers for Op Sky have been completed and are being finalised. They are expected to be submitted to the DPP for review next week,' he said.
In the Op Sky operation conducted in January, MACC successfully dismantled a corruption and money laundering ring involving financial consultancy firms and bank officers at several financial institutions.
The operation, led by MACC's Anti-Money Laundering Division in collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), resulted in the arrest of 12 individuals in raids at 24 locations, including homes and offices in the Klang Valley.
To date, 27 individuals have been arrested, comprising 18 bank officers, eight staff from the involved consultancy firms, and one member of the public. All were later released on MACC bail.
During the operation, MACC seized about 4,000 documents and froze 98 bank accounts involving over RM17 million.

KLIA immigration officers arrested in RM400,000 bribery probe

KUANTAN: Two Immigration officers stationed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport face corruption charges following their arrest in a major bribery investigation. The suspects allegedly received approximately RM400,000 to facilitate unauthorized entry for foreigners bypassing standard immigration checks. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers apprehended both men during simultaneous operations in Nilai and Johor Bahru on Monday. Both suspects, aged in their 40s and holding KP1 and KP2 grades, served at KLIA's separate terminals. A source revealed the arrests targeted a sophisticated counter setting syndicate operating at both KLIA terminals from 2022 to 2024. This syndicate allegedly collected hundreds of thousands in ringgit to bypass mandatory entry procedures for foreign nationals. Following the arrests, MACC officials seized substantial cash amounts and froze multiple bank accounts connected to the suspects. The Magistrate's Court granted a seven-day remand order for both officers until August 26 to facilitate further investigation. Pahang MACC director Mohd Shukor Mahmud confirmed the ongoing investigation under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. He stated that investigators are working to identify additional individuals potentially involved in the syndicate's operations. - Bernama

Government official arrested for bribery and sponsored trips by MACC

PUTRAJAYA: A principal assistant director at a government department has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. The arrest relates to suspicions of soliciting bribes and receiving sponsorships for overseas trips. The individual is in his forties and was taken into custody yesterday evening. He was apprehended while giving a statement at the Putrajaya MACC office. A four day remand order was issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin this morning. The order follows an application by the MACC to facilitate further investigation. Preliminary findings indicate the suspect solicited and accepted sponsorships from various companies and individuals. These sponsorships were used to finance his trips to several overseas destinations. The timeframe for these activities spans from March 2023 to January 2025. The trips were connected to the Dubai Orchid Export Farm Project. This project is estimated to be worth RM125 million. The total value of the sponsored trips is said to exceed RM50,000. Putrajaya MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest. He stated the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. In a separate and unrelated case, a female insurance agent was also remanded. Her arrest is for involvement in a fake investment scheme. The scheme is alleged to have deceived 22 investors out of RM21 million. The suspect, also in her forties, was arrested at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. She has been remanded for five days until August 24. Preliminary investigations show the funds were never received by the cooperative involved. Investors were instead given fake investment certificates. This second case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009. - Bernama

Pamela Ling Case: Police Recorded Statements Of 48 Witnesses

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Police have summoned 48 witnesses, including four officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), to record their statements to assist in the investigation into the disappearance of Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said close cooperation was also being carried out with enforcement agencies, including the MACC, to ensure that the investigation could be carried out comprehensively. "Cooperation was made with related agencies, including the Immigration Department. For example, the vehicle that was allegedly used (to kidnap Pamela in Putrajaya when she was on her way to an appointment at MACC headquarters on April 9) was found north of the Bukit Kayu Hitam-Thailand border. "This is only a belief, not an affirmative (confirmation)," he said during his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He also stressed that police will investigate every report of a kidnapping or missing persons case according to the standard operating procedures (SOP) in accordance with the law. He said that according to police data and records, in every 10 missing persons cases, nine were successfully found, including those who were alive and those who had died. 'Specifically, this missing person incident, in terms of data, does not give an impression that the level (of public safety) is worrying. But we cannot adopt a denial syndrome attitude because if it involves lives, it is crucial from the perspective of the police, and we will use all our resources to overcome it,' he said. Meanwhile, commenting on the issue of national border security, Saifuddin Nasution said the authorities had detected 71 illegal routes for smuggling activities along the border of Sarawak, Malaysia with Kalimantan Indonesia, including hot spots in Ba'kelalan, Lubuk Antu and Tebedu. The government, he said, had approved an allocation of RM28 million to the Home Ministry (KDN) to develop seven additional security control posts, including Pos Raso 1 in Lundu, Pos Sapit in Padawan and Pos Tepoi in Serian.
