No Fairytale Ending: Kuwait Blocks ‘Snow White' Over Israeli Star

Arab Times15-04-2025
KUWAIT CITY, April 15: For the second time, a film featuring Israeli actress Gal Gadot has been banned from cinemas in Kuwait. Following the 2022 ban of Death on the Nile, the upcoming movie Snow White has now been pulled from Kuwaiti cinemas by the Kuwait National Cinema Company (Cinescape), Grand Cinema, and Vox Cinema.
Ibrahim Al-Juraidan, head of marketing at Cinescape, stated that the film was canceled due to Gadot's involvement. The decision aligns with Kuwait's official stance and came after public calls to prevent the film's release.
In Snow White, directed by Marc Webb, Gadot plays the Evil Queen opposite Rachel Zegler in the title role. Gadot, a former conscript in the Israeli army, has faced widespread criticism from pro-Palestinian movements for her public support of the Israeli military and its actions in Gaza.
Similarly, Lebanese authorities have also banned the film from screening, citing a decision by the Arab League's Boycott of Israel office, due to the participation of the Israeli actress.

New rules to improve governance and Kuwaitize supervisory roles in cooperatives

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 14: Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah, Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs, announced on Wednesday the issuance of a ministerial decision introducing significant amendments to the cooperative work bylaw. The reforms aim to establish strong governance principles, implement organized employment policies, and enhance the Kuwaitization of supervisory positions within cooperative societies through a unified central mechanism. Minister Al-Huwailah emphasized that these amendments align with the ministry's vision to develop the cooperative sector, improve operational and administrative efficiency, and provide superior services to shareholders and consumers. The changes also support Kuwait's broader strategy to increase the participation of national competencies in leadership roles across various sectors. The decision introduces a centralized committee responsible for filling key supervisory positions — namely: general manager, deputy general manager, and department head. This committee is headed by the ministry's undersecretary and includes representatives from the Public Authority for Manpower, the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies, and relevant ministry departments. Applications for these leadership roles will be processed exclusively via the 'Fakhrna' platform, operated by the Public Authority for Manpower. The recruitment process will be overseen by the committee, starting with application reviews, followed by electronic written tests administered in cooperation with an accredited university, requiring candidates to achieve a minimum success rate of 80 percent. The final stage consists of personal interviews to select the most qualified national talents. The minister clarified that candidates must meet clear conditions to be eligible for supervisory roles, including being Kuwaiti nationals of good conduct, not retired, and possessing the necessary academic qualifications and practical experience relevant to the leadership positions. Successful completion of all evaluation stages is mandatory. Minister Al-Huwailah highlighted that these amendments mark a crucial step toward enhancing professionalism and transparency in the cooperative sector's appointment processes. She added that the reforms will ensure the selection of competent national leaders, positively impacting the performance of cooperative societies and improving services for shareholders and consumers. Furthermore, the amendments will strengthen Kuwaitization efforts and create more opportunities for Kuwaiti youth to actively contribute to the country's development.

Article 8 women with adjusted status to receive notifications via 'Sahel' starting Aug 31: MoI

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 14 The Ministry of Interior (MoI), in collaboration with the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI), announced on Wednesday that starting August 31, official notifications will be issued through the government's unified e-services application, Sahel. These notifications are specifically intended for female beneficiaries who have completed the necessary procedures to amend their legal status, as part of cases involving the revocation of Kuwaiti nationality under Article 8 of the Law. The move follows the implementation of a formal mechanism approved by the Ministry of Interior to manage and regularize such cases. In a joint statement, both the MoI and PACI urged eligible individuals not to visit PACI offices in person at this time. Instead, they are advised to await official communication via the Sahel application.

Zionists bombard Gaza City

11 more killed in attacks • Hamas leader due in Cairo in bid to salvage ceasefire talks CAIRO: Zionist entity planes and tanks kept bombarding eastern areas of Gaza City overnight, killing at least 11 people, witnesses and medics said on Tuesday, with Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya due in Cairo for talks to revive a US-backed ceasefire plan. The latest round of indirect talks in Qatar ended in deadlock in late July with Zionist entity and Palestinian group Hamas trading blame over the lack of progress on a US proposal for a 60-day truce and hostage release deal. Zionist entity has since said it will launch a new offensive and seize control of Gaza City, which it captured shortly after the war's outbreak in October 2023 before pulling out. Zionist entity Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to expand military control over Gaza, expected to be launched in October, has increased a global outcry over the widespread devastation, displacement and hunger afflicting Gaza's 2.2 million people. It has also stirred criticism in Zionist entity, with the military chief of staff warning it could endanger surviving hostages and prove a death trap for Zionist soldiers. It has also raised fears of further displacement and hardship among the estimated one million Palestinians in the Gaza City region. Foreign ministers of 24 countries including Britain, Canada, Australia, France and Japan, said on Tuesday the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had reached 'unimaginable levels' and urged Zionist entity to allow unrestricted aid into the enclave. A Palestinian man carries a wounded youth, evacuated from the site of a Zionist strike, west of Gaza City on August 12, 2025. Zionist entity denies responsibility for hunger in Gaza, accusing Hamas of stealing aid. It says it has taken steps to increase deliveries, including pausing fighting for parts of the day in some areas and announcing protected routes for aid convoys. A Palestinian official with knowledge of the mediated ceasefire talks said Hamas was prepared to return to the negotiating table, and the leaders who were visiting Cairo on Tuesday would reaffirm that stance. 'Hamas believes negotiation is the only way to end the war and is open to discuss any ideas that would secure an end to the war,' the official, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters. Egypt's state-affiliated Al Qahera News television said the Hamas delegates have arrived in Egypt 'for consultations on ceasefire talks'. However, the gaps between the sides appear to remain wide on key issues, including the extent of any Zionist military withdrawal and demands for Hamas to disarm. A Hamas official told Reuters on Tuesday the Islamist movement was ready to relinquish Gaza governance on behalf of a non-partisan committee, but it would not relinquish its arms before a Palestinian state is established. Netanyahu, whose far-right ultranationalist coalition allies want an outright Zionist takeover of all of Gaza, has vowed the war will not end until Hamas is eradicated. On Tuesday, Gaza's health ministry said that 89 Palestinians had been killed by Zionist fire in the past 24 hours. Witnesses and medics said Zionist bombardments overnight killed seven people in two houses in Gaza City's Zeitoun suburb and another four in an apartment building in the city center. In the south of Gaza, five people, including a couple and their child, were killed by a Zionist airstrike on a house in the city of Khan Younis and four others by a strike on a tent encampment in nearby coastal Mawasi, medics said. The Zionist military said it was looking into the reports of the latest bombardments and that its forces take precautions to mitigate civilian harm. Separately, it said its forces had killed dozens of militants in north Gaza over the past month and destroyed more tunnels used by militants in the area. Five more people, including two children, have died of starvation and malnutrition in Gaza in the past 24 hours, the territory's health ministry said. The new deaths raised the number of deaths from the same causes to 227, including 103 children, since the war started, it added. Zionist entity disputes the malnutrition fatality figures reported by the health ministry in the Hamas-run enclave. – Reuters
