The idea that creativity is all about the people in the room has dominated how we think about innovation for decades. Hire the right minds, assemble dynamic teams, mix seniority and junior energy and the ideas will follow. But the physical space where this thinking takes place is often treated as secondary. A blank canvas. A neutral backdrop.
It isn't.
Where we work shapes how we think. It influences our interactions, our focus, our willingness to speak up — even our mood. It follows that space is not just the container for collaboration; it is one of its key ingredients.
Neuroscience shows that our surroundings, from light and noise to the presence of others, have a direct effect on how we think and feel. Behavioural design builds on this, revealing how subtle shifts in layout or atmosphere can reshape how people move, interact and focus.
Organisational psychology connects the dots, reminding us that culture is not just defined in strategy documents. It is experienced daily, through spatial cues like furniture placement, sound and the invisible norms a room encourages or suppresses.
Enter the open-plan office. This work solution concept was once championed as the answer to innovation. Tear down the walls, the thinking went, and ideas will flow. Although open spaces may encourage visibility, they can also erode privacy and focus. The constant proximity to others, the background noise, the lack of boundaries often lead, not to spontaneous collaboration, but to quiet withdrawal. People find ways to disappear in plain sight: headphones go on, requests for remote days increase, people begin to seek polite distance. The cost of bad design isn't just discomfort — it's disengagement.
A better model acknowledges that different types of work demand different environments. Focused tasks need quiet. Strategy sessions need stimulation. Informal exchanges — where some of the best ideas begin — need somewhere relaxed, without the pressure of being seen to perform.
The most effective workspaces are zoned, flexible and intentional. They offer choice, not just space. They offer places, not space: places to be comfortable, focused and connected to achieve what you set out to achieve. They follow the natural ebb and flow of creativity instead of forcing it in one common, soulless space.
What matters even more than layout is the emotional signal a space sends. Does it invite people in or push them away? Does it communicate that individuals are trusted to manage their time and energy or that they are being monitored, measured and contained? Some might even go so far as to say like lab animals being observed for behavioural changes which is the antithesis to inspired thought.
In one industrial-era factory, workers began queuing to clock out at 3.45pm, long before the 4pm end of shift. Not because they were lazy, but because the environment trained them to value time over contribution. They were managed by the minute … and they responded in kind. Innovation doesn't happen when people are watching the clock. It happens when they lose track of time because they're absorbed in what they're doing.
Compare this with spaces designed for movement and encounter. A person grabbing a coffee ends up in conversation with someone working on something completely different and unexpected connections are made. These collisions don't happen by accident. They happen because the environment was built to encourage them, subtly and respectfully.
There's also a growing recognition that the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to workspace design fails to serve the reality of neurodiverse teams. Bright lights, loud conversations and rigid routines might suit some but overwhelm others. A truly creative space must accommodate variation — not just in work styles, but in sensory needs and social energy. Offering pockets of calm, tools for privacy and spaces for quiet recharge is not a perk, it's essential for inclusive thinking.
Control is another overlooked factor. Research consistently shows that when people have autonomy over how, where and when they work, they perform better. This applies to the physical environment too. Being able to choose your seat, adjust the lighting, close a door or move to a different room gives people a sense of ownership and that, in turn, nurtures psychological safety.
The post-pandemic shift to hybrid work has only sharpened the need for environments that feel human. People who've worked from home know the value of comfort, autonomy and quiet. To bring them back into a shared space, employers can't rely on obligation. The office has to offer something better, not just in terms of resources, but in terms of experience. It has to earn people's presence.
That means getting rid of outdated binaries like 'work-life balance', which assume the two are separate and in competition. People don't stop being parents, partners or creatives when they enter the office. The best workspaces acknowledge this; not with gimmicks, but with thoughtful design that supports the full range of human needs.
Even rituals matter. Weekly check-ins, shared meals, open brainstorming hours — all these signal values, set tone and help people align without needing to over-communicate. The environment can support these rituals or subtly undercut them. If there's no place to gather comfortably, the informal sync stops. If it's hard to find a quiet corner, deep thinking is replaced with shallow tasks.
Psychological safety is often spoken about in terms of leadership or management style. But it's also physical. When people feel overheard, exposed or crowded, they shut down. When they feel at ease; when they have space to think, speak, and sometimes just be, they open up.
So, what makes some spaces more creative than others? It isn't the presence of a whiteboard or a brainstorm room. It's whether people feel they belong. Whether they feel safe to suggest something half-formed. Whether they sense that the environment is on their side.
True innovation doesn't just need talent. It needs trust. And trust is built not just by people, but by places too.

Made in China 2.0: Innovation, influence and geopolitics

Photo: File Not long ago, the words 'Made in China' conjured up images of flimsy plastic toys, dodgy electronics and counterfeit designer handbags. For much of the world, it was shorthand for cheap, low-quality goods that generally labelled China as the factory floor of the world, not its innovation lab. Today however, that label appears on drones filming Hollywood blockbusters, smartphones that are increasingly competing with the iPhone and electric vehicles rolling on roads globally. Even the apps we scroll, from Shein to Temu to TikTok, are Chinese creations that have woven themselves into the fabric of everyday life around the world. Somehow, between counterfeit products and next-generation gadgets, China stopped copying the future and started building it. The result? As China's products advanced and improved, so did perception. Not only of Chinese goods but of China itself. China's rise from mass producer to global tech giant did not happen overnight. In the 1990s and 2000s, the country was viewed as a producer of inferior knockoff products, which were mass produced in unregulated sweatshops. The perspective was largely driven by ' Although this market thrived in China and globally, foreign firms were frustrated by intellectual property theft. Chinese authorities, too, were concerned about the effect of the Shanzhai phenomenon, fearing that the country's global reputation would be permanently tarnished. But, by the 2010s, a subtle revolution was starting. Chinese firms began investing heavily in research and development of innovative industries, shifting from the typical low-end manufacturing to high-value tech industries. In 2013, Time magazine ran an article titled reflecting global scepticism. The author, Michael Schuman, argued that 'The country can no longer rely on just making lots of stuff; China has to invent things, design them, brand them and market them. Instead of following the leaders of global industry, China has to produce leaders of its own.' Schuman goes on to add, 'Few emerging nations in modern times have made the leap from assembler to inventor, copycat to innovator.' China did exactly that. By 2014, Xiaomi was commanding headlines as the 'Apple of China', delivering sleek smartphones at a fraction of the cost of its Western counterparts. In 2015, Beijing launched the 'Made in China 2025' initiative aimed at securing the country's position as a global powerhouse in high-value technology, as well as heavily investing in domestic companies, allowing them to compete both locally and globally. Consumer drone company DJI, which makes drones used in Hollywood blockbusters like Shogun and Dune: Part Two , emerged as a global leader in cutting-edge hardware. Today, Huawei smartphones can compete toe-to-toe with Apple on camera benchmark and network performance tests. BYD and Geely are And, perhaps most significantly, ByteDance's TikTok has revolutionised social media engagement with a powerful recommendation algorithm that Western platforms are struggling to recreate. Dominance in other fields, such as high-speed rail, 5G and solar technology infrastructure, shows that China is no longer catching up. It is setting the pace. The evolution, however, has not come without geopolitical tensions. As Chinese products become increasingly used and trusted by consumers globally, they generate soft power for their nation that very few governments can match. One does not need to subscribe to Beijing's ideology to rely on its ever innovative and reliable technology and that directly translates to influence. The rise of China in these industries means different things to different people. In the In the West, however, a strange contradiction unfolds. Citizens continue to embrace platforms like Shein and TikTok, while policymakers are increasingly hostile because of dependency and national security concerns. In some cases, fearing the ideological influence of China through these platforms, Western governments have responded accordingly. Concerns over possible espionage in Huawei's 5G hardware led several states, including the US, to This tension highlights a crucial reality that is happening in front of us — China's technological ascent is no longer just a commercial success story; it is a geopolitical one. As perceptions of China evolve, so will the strategies of nations. The next frontier of geopolitics will not be decided in summits or trade sanctions. It is happening in cyber ecosystems, in the global showrooms of app stores and online platforms. The more the world relies on Chinese tech, the more China's sphere of influence expands. The West may fear ideological influence and data breaches. The Global South may welcome the chance for connectivity and participation. But what is undeniable either way is a perception shift has taken root. Global consumers today, knowingly or not, are casting votes of confidence in China's technological future, and in doing so, are helping shape the map of global influence as we know it. Why big business needs to rethink its relationship with SMMEs

Photo: David Harrison/M&G South Africa has more than 2.5 million small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), employing nearly 10 million people. Yet, many of these businesses are still viewed by corporates through the narrow lens of corporate social investment or supplier development compliance. What if we have it backwards? What if it is big business that can no longer afford to underestimate the value and innovation of small business? The truth is, without meaningful partnerships with the SMME ecosystem, especially in underrepresented and township communities, large companies risk stagnation. It is time to reframe the conversation around small business. SMMEs are not charity cases. They are central to our country's economic resilience and recovery. These entrepreneurs are resourceful, driven and deeply connected to the needs of the communities they serve. They move with agility, often doing more with less, and their solutions are often more local, inclusive and relevant. They understand culture and context and they are embedded in their markets. This is something many large corporates struggle to achieve, even with deep budgets and broad reach. When we talk about true transformation, especially in supply chains, we need to start seeing SMMEs as strategic partners, not tick-box initiatives. Too often, enterprise development is still treated as an isolated function, divorced from actual procurement or supply-chain opportunities. This kind of support is well-meaning but short-sighted. The real opportunity lies in collaboration that is sustainable and commercially driven. That means designing long-term interventions that build capacity, open procurement pipelines and develop solutions together. It is not about doing SMMEs a favour but rather about recognising that the future of big business is intertwined with the success of small business. Supporting SMMEs should not sit only with one division or a social impact mandate. It should sit across the business, as a priority for operations, procurement and product teams. One of the most effective shifts a company can make is to pay small businesses on time. It seems basic but it makes a significant difference to a small business's ability to manage cash flow and grow sustainably. Equally important is including them early in the design and development process. Why not co-create new product lines with small-scale manufacturers or service providers? Why not bring them into pilot projects or innovation labs? Transformation is not only about representation. It is about inclusion in meaningful, income-generating opportunities. And inclusion does not start with access to funding. It starts with access to networks, to decision-makers, to industry information and to market opportunities. This is where large corporates can unlock real value. Not by building parallel programmes but by finding points of synergy within their own ecosystems and supply chains. Big business does not operate in a vacuum. Our success is intertwined with the communities around us and the businesses that serve them. If we want to see sustainable growth, we need to start building ecosystems that are inclusive, practical and long-term. That means opening supply chains, not just talking about transformation. It means building relationships, not just writing cheques. In Women's Month, there is also an opportunity to elevate women-led SMMEs beyond the once-a-year panels and campaigns. Women entrepreneurs bring invaluable insights, leadership and resilience to the economy. But they need consistent opportunities to grow and to lead. Corporate South Africa has a powerful role to play in making that happen, not as a favour, but as a business imperative. If we are serious about rebuilding our economy, we must let go of outdated models that separate corporate social investment from core business. The future of big business might just depend on the success of its smallest partners.
